How Much Bandwidth Does a YouTube Premiere Need for a Long Video?

A Premiere’s upload speed need depends on file size and sustained upstream speed, not runtime alone. Separate live broadcasts have their own bitrate requirements.

A YouTube Premiere does not need a continuous live-stream upload from your internet connection. You upload the video before the scheduled event; YouTube delivers playback to viewers. Your upload speed affects how long the file takes to reach YouTube—not whether the Premiere can play smoothly once it starts. If you also run a separate live broadcast, that broadcast has its own bandwidth needs.

Why a Premiere does not need live-stream bandwidth

A Premiere lets creators and viewers watch a new video together in real time, but the video is uploaded in advance. You choose and upload the file, add its details, then publish it as a Premiere or schedule it. During the event, playback is delivered by YouTube; your connection is not continuously sending the video to viewers. You do not need a live encoder just to premiere an uploaded video. See YouTube’s Premiere instructions.

That means there is no special upload-speed requirement based on runtime alone. A two-hour video does not automatically need twice the upload speed of a one-hour video. What matters for transfer time is the encoded file size and the sustained upload rate you actually get.

Estimate upload time from file size and upload speed

Use this idealized calculation:

Transfer time in seconds ≈ file size in bits ÷ upload rate in bits per second.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

For example, a 4 GB file is about 32 gigabits. At a sustained 10 Mbps upstream rate, the ideal transfer time is about 3,200 seconds, or 53 minutes. Real uploads can take longer because speeds fluctuate and other devices or traffic share the connection. Treat the result as an estimate, not a guaranteed upload time.

Check the file’s actual size and measure your upstream speed under conditions similar to the planned upload. Leave extra time for transfer and YouTube processing before the scheduled Premiere. YouTube does not promise one processing duration that applies to every video.

Keep three different bitrate and speed figures separate

  • Video encoding bitrate describes how much data the video represents per second of playback. It influences the file size.
  • Internet upload speed describes how quickly your connection can send that file to YouTube.
  • Live-stream ingestion bitrate is the rate an encoder continuously sends during a separate live broadcast.

YouTube’s recommended SDR upload encoding bitrates are below. These are video encoding recommendations, not minimum broadband upload speeds. The YouTube pages do not state a publication year for these figures.

Upload resolution and frame rate Recommended video bitrate
1080p, standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) 8 Mbps
1080p, high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps) 12 Mbps
2160p/4K, standard frame rates 35–45 Mbps
2160p/4K, high frame rates 53–68 Mbps

These upload recommendations do not mean a 4K Premiere is supported: YouTube’s Premiere workflow says output above 1080p is unsupported. The workflow also excludes 360/VR180 video and Shorts. Check the current upload encoding recommendations alongside YouTube’s Premiere requirements when preparing a file.

If you are also running a live broadcast

A separate live stream—such as a live host, discussion, or event around the Premiere—does use ongoing upload bandwidth. Select its bitrate according to the encoder codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include:

Live output Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

YouTube provides separate recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs; consult its live encoder settings and bitrate table rather than applying these two H.264 values to every setup.

YouTube recommends having 20% more upload capacity than the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. For example, a 10 Mbps primary plus a 10 Mbps backup gives 20 Mbps combined; with 20% headroom, plan for about 24 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for other traffic on the connection. That 24 Mbps figure is arithmetic using YouTube’s guidance, not a separate platform threshold.

Prepare the Premiere and protect a separate live stream

  1. Choose a supported Premiere output. Keep the output at 1080p or below; YouTube’s Premiere workflow does not support higher output, 360/VR180, or Shorts.
  2. Upload the file ahead of time. Use its actual size and measured upstream rate to estimate transfer time, then allow additional time for variable throughput and processing.
  3. If you are broadcasting live too, set the encoder for that broadcast. Use YouTube’s table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, and account for primary and backup streams.
  4. Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
  5. Use a wired connection for computer live streaming where practical. YouTube recommends Ethernet for live streaming from a computer. Ethernet can improve connection reliability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet plan.
