If your home PC is watching a YouTube Live property-tour loop, it uses download bandwidth. A useful estimate is about 0.45 decimal GB per hour for every 1 Mbps of sustained video bitrate. YouTube’s resolution-based connection recommendations can help with planning, but they are not measurements or guarantees of the data your particular stream will use.
Estimate data use from the stream’s bitrate
Use this conversion for a stream that plays at a roughly steady bitrate:

Data per hour (decimal GB) ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe conversion comes from 1 megabit per second sustained for 3,600 seconds, divided by 8 bits per byte: about 450 megabytes, or 0.45 decimal GB, in an hour. For example, a hypothetical 2.5 Mbps stream would use about 1.125 GB per hour, and a hypothetical 5 Mbps stream about 2.25 GB per hour. Those are arithmetic examples, not measured rates for a property-tour stream.

At a similar bitrate, double the viewing time and you will use roughly double the video data. Actual totals can vary as playback quality and bitrate change.
Use YouTube’s playback-speed guidance as a planning proxy
YouTube Help lists recommended sustained connection speeds for playback by resolution. The figures below convert those speeds into approximate hourly data equivalents using the formula above. They are not guaranteed YouTube data-use rates: YouTube does not state that its recommended connection speed is the exact bitrate delivered to a viewer.

Playback quality can change the total
A YouTube Live viewer’s actual data use depends on the delivered stream, not just the label of the property tour or the broadcaster’s outgoing settings. YouTube says playback quality may adjust based on internet speed, player or screen size, original video quality, and browser. On a computer, viewers can also manually select a quality in the player. See YouTube’s instructions for changing video quality on a computer.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
For a long-running loop, automatic quality changes can make a single hourly estimate less exact. Choosing a lower quality may reduce the data needed, but the precise reduction depends on the video YouTube delivers.
Watching and broadcasting use bandwidth in different directions
If the PC is watching the loop, video data arrives over the internet: that is download traffic. If the PC is broadcasting a tour through an encoder, video data leaves the home connection: that is upload traffic. Do not use a viewer’s download estimate as a creator’s upload budget, or vice versa.

If the home PC is sending the live tour
YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, its recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those are ingestion recommendations for the creator’s outgoing stream—not the exact rates viewers receive. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer output formats. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
To estimate upload data for an encoder configured at a sustained bitrate, use the same conversion: configured Mbps × 0.45 gives approximate decimal GB per hour. YouTube advises creators to have sufficient outbound bandwidth and to leave 20% room; on a shared connection, other users and devices may reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Measure the loop for a more specific estimate
If you need to budget against a data cap, measure your own session rather than treating a resolution proxy as a promise:
- Set the YouTube player to the quality you expect to use, or leave it on Auto if that is how the PC will normally watch.
- Note the PC’s or router’s network-usage counter, then play the loop for a timed interval long enough to be useful.
- Check the counter again and compare the increase with the time watched. If the PC is also downloading updates or other content, the counter includes that traffic too.
- For a rough hourly rate, divide the measured GB by the playback hours. Repeat at the intended quality if you want to compare settings.
This is a practical way to estimate your own connection’s usage; YouTube does not prescribe it as an official measurement procedure.
Do not apply the mobile 10 MB-per-minute tip to PC playback
YouTube Help says, “A good rule of thumb is that the stream will use about 10 MB of data per 1 minute of stream.” That statement appears in mobile filming guidance, not as a fixed rate for a computer watching a live stream. It should not be used as a guaranteed PC viewer estimate. The same guidance distinguishes inbound and outbound bandwidth and recommends Ethernet for computer live streamers; see YouTube’s live filming tips and its computer live-stream recommendations.
