For the original Magico A3, the manufacturer recommends an amplifier rated for at least 50 watts RMS and no more than 300 watts RMS. The speaker is rated at 4 ohms, so compare an amplifier’s continuous output at 4 ohms—not only its more prominent 8-ohm figure. The right choice within that range depends on your room, listening distance and desired peak volume; the published range does not identify one ideal wattage for every system.
First check which A3 you own. Magico announced a redesigned A3 2027 on October 1, 2026, and the original A3’s figures should not be assumed to apply to that model. The specifications discussed below are for the original A3.

What Magico specifies for the original A3
Magico’s current original-A3 product page lists 88 dB sensitivity, 4-ohm impedance and recommended amplifier power from 50 watts RMS minimum to 300 watts maximum. Its owner’s manual gives the same power limits and specifies 300 watts RMS as the maximum recommended power. Magico’s 2017 launch announcement also states a 50-watt minimum and 300-watt maximum; it said the speakers were planned to ship in Q1 2018.
| Specification | Published figure | What it means when choosing an amplifier |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended minimum power | 50 W RMS | Magico’s stated lower limit for the original A3; it is not a guarantee that every 50-watt amplifier will suit every room or listening level. |
| Maximum recommended power | 300 W RMS | The upper end of the manufacturer’s recommended range, not a target or a direction to use a 300-watt amplifier. |
| Nominal impedance | 4 ohms | Check the amplifier’s output and operating capability at 4 ohms. |
| Manufacturer sensitivity rating | 88 dB | Read it alongside the measurement convention; a differently referenced sensitivity figure is not directly interchangeable. |
These are model-specific published ratings, not a room-by-room power prescription. The available specifications do not give an exact wattage for a particular listening distance, room size, music choice or preferred loudness. They also do not identify a universally correct amplifier model.

Why the 4-ohm rating matters
An amplifier’s wattage depends on the load against which it is rated. A figure quoted at 8 ohms does not, by itself, tell you what the amplifier can deliver into a 4-ohm speaker. When comparing amplifiers for the A3, look for a clearly stated continuous output at 4 ohms and confirm that the amplifier is specified to operate with that load.
Do not assume an amplifier’s 4-ohm output will be exactly twice its 8-ohm output. The headline rating alone does not establish how a particular amplifier behaves under load. Use the manufacturer’s published 4-ohm specification and, where available, its operating guidance rather than inferring performance from the 8-ohm number.
Power capability is only one part of a suitable match. A useful choice must be able to deliver clean output at the level you actually use, including musical peaks, without operating in a way the amplifier manufacturer rules out. Inputs, system compatibility and practical features also matter, but they come after confirming that the amplifier is suitable for the speakers’ 4-ohm rating.

How to interpret the A3’s sensitivity figures
Magico lists the original A3 at 88 dB sensitivity. A Hi-Fi Choice review, published circa 2022, measured 87 dB at 2.83 volts and explains that this corresponds to 83 dB per watt for a speaker with a 4-ohm nominal impedance. The review’s measured figure and Magico’s published figure use different references, so they should not be compared as though they were the same measurement.
This distinction matters because amplifier comparisons often use sensitivity figures to estimate how loudly a speaker may play for a given input. If one number is expressed for a voltage and another for a watt, the reference conditions need to be understood before drawing a conclusion. For the A3, the review explicitly gives the 83 dB/W equivalent for its 87 dB-at-2.83-V measurement; presenting 87 dB as though it were directly equivalent to 87 dB per watt would miss that qualification.
Neither sensitivity figure supplies a complete answer to “How many watts do I need?” A sensitivity rating does not account by itself for listening distance, room acoustics, speaker placement, music dynamics or the loudest level you intend to reach. The manufacturer’s 50–300 W range remains the practical published boundary; the sensitivity figures add context, not a room-specific calculator.

Choose an amplifier for your room and listening habits
Start with the kind of listening you actually do, rather than choosing the largest wattage available. Someone listening at moderate levels in a smaller room may have different peak-output needs from a listener sitting farther away, filling a larger space or playing dynamic recordings loudly. Those factors affect the headroom you may want, but the available A3 specifications do not translate them into an exact number of watts.

Do not treat a wattage recommendation as independent of listening position.
- Desired level and peaks: Think about your normal volume as well as brief musical peaks. An amplifier should play the levels you want cleanly, rather than only reaching them while being pushed into clipping.
- 4-ohm capability: Compare continuous output at 4 ohms and confirm that the amplifier is rated to handle the speaker load.
- System fit: Once power capability is established, check that the amplifier has the connections and other practical features your system requires.
- Stay within the published range: Use 50 W RMS minimum and 300 W RMS maximum as Magico’s guidance for the original A3, not as a promise that every amplifier in the range is equally suitable.
These checks help narrow the choice without pretending that a specification sheet can account for every room. If two amplifiers both meet the basic requirements, compare their documented 4-ohm output, suitability for your intended listening levels, and system features. A higher wattage number alone does not establish that one will sound better or be the right match.
A step-by-step way to check an amplifier
- Identify the speaker generation. Confirm that your speakers are the original A3. If the model is marked or sold as A3 2027, look for specifications specifically for that redesigned version rather than applying the original model’s figures.
- Find continuous power at 4 ohms. Check the amplifier’s technical specifications for its output into 4-ohm loads. Do not make the decision from an 8-ohm rating alone.
- Compare the rating with Magico’s range. For the original A3, the manufacturer’s published guidance is 50 W RMS minimum and 300 W RMS maximum. Check that the amplifier’s relevant rating and operating guidance are compatible with that range.
- Consider the level you need in your room. Account for listening distance, room size and the peaks in the music you play. These determine what you need in practice, but Magico’s figures do not provide a formula that turns them into an exact wattage.
- Check operating guidance and system requirements. Confirm that the amplifier is intended to work at 4 ohms and that its inputs and other features suit the rest of your system.
- Listen for clean operation at your intended level. If you audition the system, assess whether the amplifier remains clean on peaks at a realistic listening volume. Do not use maximum volume as a test; avoid clipping and unsafe operation.
What the 300-watt maximum does—and does not—tell you
Magico calls 300 watts RMS the maximum recommended power for the original A3. That makes it the upper end of the manufacturer’s stated range, not a required amplifier size. There is no instruction in the specifications to choose 300 watts, and the sources do not establish that an amplifier rated at the maximum is preferable to one with lower output that suits the listener’s needs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Likewise, the 50-watt minimum is not a promise that every amplifier carrying a 50-watt label will be adequate in every use. The rated load, whether power is specified continuously and the way the system is used all matter. Use the range as a guardrail, then check the amplifier’s 4-ohm capability and the listening conditions.
Avoid treating power as permission to turn the volume up without limit. The maximum recommended figure does not make clipping, unsafe operation or excessive listening levels acceptable. The useful objective is clean output at the level you intend to use, not simply the largest number on the amplifier’s specification sheet.

The generation caveat is important because Magico announced a redesigned A3 2027 on October 1, 2026. The announcement identifies a new model, while the product specifications and manual discussed here describe the original A3. An industry report describes changes to the redesigned model’s cabinet, drivers and crossover, but the sources available here do not establish an official amplifier-power range for A3 2027.

If you are buying, setting up or troubleshooting the redesigned speaker, confirm its own current specification sheet or manual before choosing an amplifier. A shared model name does not establish that the older generation’s power guidance carries over. If you have the original A3, Magico’s published 50–300 W RMS range, 4-ohm impedance and 88 dB sensitivity are the applicable figures discussed in this article.
What the specifications cannot decide for you
The manufacturer’s figures answer the basic compatibility question: for the original A3, Magico recommends at least 50 watts RMS and lists 300 watts RMS as the maximum recommended power. They do not settle how much power one particular listener needs. No room-specific wattage calculator, definitive amplifier shortlist or test establishing an ideal model is provided by these specifications.
That means a responsible recommendation should stay conditional. Establish the speaker generation, verify 4-ohm operation and compare continuous 4-ohm output with the stated range. Then judge whether the amplifier can meet your listening and peak-level requirements in your room. If the product information does not make the 4-ohm rating or operating suitability clear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified dealer before treating an 8-ohm headline figure as enough evidence.
