How MSPs Can Explain XDR’s Value in Three Clear Pitches

Help customers understand XDR through three practical outcomes: connected security clues, clearer alert priorities, and coordinated response responsibilities.

XDR is easier to sell when you connect what it does to a customer’s day-to-day security work. Instead of leading with acronyms, show how it can connect clues across supported tools, help prioritize related alerts, and coordinate investigation and response. Be specific about what your service covers and who takes each action.

What XDR means—and what it does

XDR stands for Extended Detection and Response. The NIST CSRC glossary lists the term and points to NIST SP 1800-30C; it does not define one universal product specification. In practical terms, XDR brings security signals from supported sources together so a team can connect related activity, investigate incidents, and coordinate response.

Depending on the product and its integrations, those sources may include endpoints, networks, cloud services, email, SaaS applications, and identities. Coverage varies: do not imply that a particular platform sees every source unless your proposed configuration actually connects them.

Three customer-friendly ways to pitch XDR

1. “See the clues together.”

A suspicious sign-in, an unusual email, and activity on a device may look like separate events when they appear in separate tools. XDR can bring signals from supported sources into a more connected incident view, helping the team investigate whether the events are related.

SonicWall TZ280 2.5 Gbps Next-Gen Firewall Appliance, HW Only
  • APPLIANCE ONLY: Hardware unit sold without a service subscription — security services, firmware updates and support are NOT included and must be purchased separately to activate protection.
  • PERFORMANCE: Up to 2.5 Gbps firewall inspection, 1 Gbps threat prevention and 1.2 Gbps IPSec VPN throughput driven by SonicWall's patented Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection (RFDPI) engine.
  • CONNECTIVITY: 8x1GbE + 2x1G SFP in a desktop form factor; zero-touch deploy and manage on-box or via cloud Network Security Manager (NSM).
  • THREAT PROTECTION: SonicOS 8 delivers intrusion prevention, gateway anti-malware, application control, TLS/SSL decryption, Capture ATP multi-engine sandboxing (RTDMI) and reputation-based content & DNS filtering with an active service subscription.
  • BUILT FOR SMALL BUSINESS & BRANCH: Secure SD-WAN, IPSec and SSL VPN plus Zero-Trust Network Access through Cloud Secure Edge keep distributed sites and remote workers protected.

Make the promise concrete: name the sources your service integrates and any meaningful gaps. “We can connect alerts from your email and endpoint tools” is clearer and safer than promising complete visibility across the customer’s environment.

2. “Know what deserves attention first.”

When related alerts are correlated and incidents prioritized, analysts can focus investigation on higher-priority activity instead of treating every notification as an isolated event. This describes a capability, not a guarantee: XDR does not make every alert disappear or ensure that every threat will be detected.

Explain how your team reviews priorities and what the customer should expect to hear about. Avoid claims about reduced alert volume or improved outcomes unless you have evidence for the specific service and customer environment.

3. “Make the next step clearer and easier to coordinate.”

Incident context and available automation can help a team investigate and carry out response actions. A customer-friendly pitch is that the service can help clarify what happened and what action may be appropriate, with the right people involved.

State who approves and performs containment: your MSP, the customer, or a managed security provider. Do not promise a response time unless that commitment is part of the service agreement and can be met in practice.

Explain the service, not just the platform

An XDR platform provides technology to collect and analyze signals, correlate incidents, and enable response. A managed XDR or MDR service adds provider-delivered monitoring and response work. These are different offer shapes, and the word “XDR” alone does not tell a customer what staffing, coverage, or response commitments are included.

Vendor materials illustrate the distinction: Cisco describes a managed XDR service tier, while Palo Alto Networks describes an MSSP-oriented platform with multitenant licensing. These examples do not establish what any individual MSP includes. Explain your own scope in plain language:

  • Which telemetry sources and integrations are included?
  • Who monitors alerts, and during what coverage hours?
  • Who investigates incidents and contacts the customer?
  • Who may approve or take response actions, and which actions require customer approval?
  • How are customer environments separated and managed?

Keep provider access and responsibility in view

MSPs often use trusted connections and privileged access to customer systems. CISA and partner authorities have warned that compromise of a service provider can create risks for its customers, and recommend practices such as least privilege and separation of duties. XDR is one part of a security operating model; it does not replace careful access controls or clear customer-provider agreements. See the CISA advisory on managed service provider security.

Use a pitch that matches what you can deliver

Before presenting XDR, align the customer-facing message with the actual configuration and service agreement. A useful pitch describes supported signals, how incidents are prioritized, and who owns each step from investigation through response. That keeps the conversation focused on operational value without implying universal coverage or guaranteed results.
