How MSPs Can Build AI Services From the Work They Already Do

MSPs can build AI services around capabilities they already use: customer discovery, device and identity management, security, workflow integration, and ongoing support.

Managed service providers can help customers adopt AI without becoming AI product companies. The practical opportunity is to extend familiar work—understanding customer environments, securing identities and devices, supporting users, and managing operations—into use-case discovery, readiness, workflow integration, governance, and ongoing support.

What AI services can an MSP provide?

An MSP can guide customers from a concrete business need to a supported implementation. That work is broader than switching on a tool or adding a license: it includes deciding where AI is useful, checking whether the environment is ready, fitting the tool into real workflows, and helping people use it safely.

  • Use-case discovery: Identify a specific business or operational task where AI may help, then prioritize it by expected value, feasibility, data readiness, and risk. Microsoft’s AI strategy guidance recommends identifying and classifying use cases by the value they create.
  • Readiness and governance: Review devices, identities, permissions, data access, security controls, and rules for acceptable use before expanding access.
  • Implementation and integration: Choose an adoption route that fits the task and the customer’s capabilities, and connect it to the workflow where the work happens.
  • Adoption and ongoing support: Train users, gather feedback, address operational issues, and maintain the service after deployment. Microsoft describes partners as helping leaders decide where to start, incorporate technology into real workflows, and support adoption after deployment (Microsoft Cloud Blog, June 29, 2026).

Start with a customer problem, not a custom AI build

The first decision is not which model to build or which platform to sell. It is which recurring task is worth improving. A useful candidate has a clear user, a recognizable workflow, and a way to judge whether the change helped. The customer should also be able to identify which data the tool needs and who is accountable for the result.

Use-case prioritization helps keep an initial engagement bounded. An MSP can compare likely value with implementation effort, data readiness, and risk, then propose a small first step rather than a broad transformation. If a use case cannot be tied to a real workflow or a meaningful outcome, adding AI may simply add complexity.

Choose the least complex adoption model that fits

Microsoft’s framework describes several routes, from ready-to-use Copilots to building with low-code SaaS tools, managed platform services, or Azure infrastructure. These are alternatives with different customization and operational demands—not a maturity ladder every customer must climb.

Adoption route Best fit Trade-off for the customer and MSP
Ready-to-use Copilot tools A common task that an existing AI-enabled application can address with limited tailoring. Typically simpler to start than a custom build, but the customer still needs appropriate access, workflow decisions, user guidance, and governance.
Low-code SaaS development A workflow that needs more tailoring than an out-of-the-box tool but can be assembled within a SaaS development environment. Offers more customization, with added configuration and maintenance responsibilities.
Managed platform development A solution that needs custom application logic while relying on a managed platform for parts of the underlying service. Can address more specific requirements, but adds development and operational complexity.
Azure infrastructure A solution whose requirements call for infrastructure-level control or a more customized architecture. Provides greater flexibility, while requiring more design, implementation, and ongoing technical responsibility.

The descriptions above summarize the choices in Microsoft’s AI strategy framework; they are not promises that a particular capability is included in every plan or geography. A customer should not be pushed toward custom development when a simpler route meets the need.

Make readiness part of the service conversation

AI readiness is not just a question of whether a customer has an AI license. The MSP may already manage the surrounding controls that determine who can use a tool, which devices are permitted, what data users can reach, and how security issues are handled. Those controls can make readiness assessment a natural extension of existing managed services.

Microsoft partner content specifically discusses Intune-managed users and devices, access, and security as part of AI readiness for MSPs (Microsoft Community Hub). That is a partner-oriented perspective, not independent proof that one product or configuration is sufficient for every customer. A readiness review should reflect the customer’s environment, applicable policies, and chosen AI use case.

  • Confirm which users and devices will be in scope.
  • Review identities, permissions, and access to the data the workflow uses.
  • Identify security and governance requirements, including who approves use and how concerns are escalated.
  • Check that users understand the tool’s role in their work and the limits of relying on its output.

Connect deployment to actual work

Installing or enabling a tool is only one step. The service should clarify where it appears in the customer’s process, what users are expected to do with it, and what happens when its output is incomplete or needs review. Microsoft’s SMB guidance frames partners’ role around finding a starting point, incorporating technology into real workflows, and supporting adoption after deployment (Microsoft Cloud Blog).

For example, a customer considering Copilot Studio or Microsoft security and compliance products should first define the workflow and controls those tools are meant to support. The product names are examples in Microsoft’s SMB material, not a recommendation that every MSP adopt them or that every feature is available in every region or plan.

Package the work without assuming one pricing model

An MSP can define a bounded discovery or readiness engagement, implementation work, and continuing support as distinct parts of a service offer. Whether those are sold as a one-time project, recurring management, or a combination depends on the work and customer; the available evidence does not establish a universal rate card or pricing model.

Deloitte’s 2024 analysis of GenAI in managed services identifies service delivery and pricing as challenges as adoption develops (Deloitte). That makes scope and delivery economics important design questions, not an argument for a particular fee structure. Before quoting, specify what discovery, configuration, governance, training, and ongoing support include, then assess the delivery effort against customer outcomes.

Keep the offer adjacent to your strengths

The case for MSPs is not that every provider must become an AI developer. It is that existing capabilities—customer knowledge, device and identity management, security, operations, and user support—can help customers adopt AI responsibly and effectively. The appropriate offer will differ by customer and by MSP: begin with a real use case, choose a proportionate implementation, and define who will support it once it is in use.
