Morocco’s power-sector coal arrives by sea. In 2024, the United States was the largest reported source of Moroccan coal imports, followed by South Africa, Kazakhstan, Colombia and Indonesia. At Jorf Lasfar, ships deliver coal to a purpose-built port beside the power station, where dedicated facilities handle it. The national trade figures show import origins, however—not which plant received any particular shipment.
Why coal imports matter to Morocco’s electricity supply
Coal supplied 64% of Morocco’s electricity production in 2023, according to the U.S. International Trade Administration, citing the Moroccan National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE). That figure describes generation in 2023; it should not be read as a 2024 or current-year share.

Morocco’s 2024 import records show the scale and declared country origins of coal entering the country. They do not establish that every recorded shipment was burned to generate electricity: the trade category covers coal and related solid fuels, which may have other uses.

World Bank WITS, using UN Comtrade data, reports 9,317,330,000 kg of Moroccan imports in HS 2701 in 2024. The category is “Coal; briquettes, ovoids and similar solid fuels manufactured from coal.” The listed partners were:

These are nationwide import totals, not power-station procurement records. They do not show which plant took a cargo, identify its mine, or establish the supplier, trader or shipper. Nor should the HS 2701 totals be described as thermal-coal-only volumes: the classification includes coal-related solid fuels.
How coal gets to Jorf Lasfar
Jorf Lasfar is Morocco’s major coal-fired power station on the Atlantic coast, next to the Port of Jorf Lasfar. TAQA Morocco’s reporting describes a coal-unloading pier and dedicated plant facilities for handling fuel. Its 2026 regulatory filing says coal deliveries arrive by ship at a neighbouring purpose-built port and are handled by the station’s coal facilities.

The physical chain documented for the site is therefore ship delivery, port unloading and handling, then transfer through the plant’s coal facilities. Public evidence cited here does not trace an individual cargo from a named mine or supplier to a particular generating unit.
Who buys the electricity—and what the records do not show
TAQA Morocco says Jorf Lasfar sells its electricity to ONEE, Morocco’s state utility, under power-purchase agreements. That identifies the electricity buyer, not the parties that contract for, trade or transport the coal. The national import table cannot connect a country’s annual total to Jorf Lasfar or any other plant.

TAQA’s 1 May 2026 filing describes six units and reports about 35 days of coal reserves at the site without further deliveries. This is an operator-reported reserve-cover snapshot, not a permanent design specification or a statement of the plant’s inventory today.

The country breakdown above is for 2024, the latest comparable coal-by-origin table identified here. A 2025 breakdown is not established by these figures. Morocco’s Office des Changes describes its official foreign-trade database as updated quarterly, making it the place to check for newer national trade data. Even a newer country table would not, on its own, reveal plant-level deliveries.
