Activision’s MWII-era guides describe how to earn them in Multiplayer. Warzone is a separate play and cosmetic-use context, while DMZ had seasonal and event challenges; the official sources reviewed do not document either mode as having a permanent MWII Gold-to-Orion ladder of its own.
What the comparison means
“Mastery camo” can mean either a completionist camo you unlock or the additional rewards earned by using that camo. Keeping those two steps separate makes the mode comparison clearer.

| Context | What is documented | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| MWII Multiplayer | Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion, with weapon- and category-based unlock requirements. Activision also lists Weapon Mastery rewards: emblems, calling cards, and a Completionist Charm. (Activision’s camo guide; Activision’s mastery guide) | This is the documented MWII completionist chain. Mastery rewards are additional challenges after unlocking camos. |
| Warzone | Activision’s MWII materials connect Warzone 2.0 to MWII seasonal content, and the current Warzone overview describes a free-to-play game with changing modes. The reviewed official material does not specify an MWII Warzone Gold–Orion unlock ladder. (Season 01 overview; Warzone overview) | Do not treat use of a camo in Warzone as proof it was earned through a Warzone-specific mastery chain. |
| DMZ | DMZ launched in the MWII and Warzone 2.0 Season 01 context. Later seasonal content included DMZ-specific participation in event challenges, such as an Armored Truck objective in a vehicle-camo event. (Season 01 overview; Season 05 Reloaded announcement) | These are seasonal or event challenges, not evidence of a permanent DMZ weapon-camo mastery chain matching Gold–Orion. |
How the MWII Multiplayer camo ladder works
Activision’s MWIII launch guide describes the MWII Multiplayer requirements as a sequence: complete a weapon’s base challenges, then meet its completionist-camo challenge and the applicable category or overall thresholds. Challenge wording differs by weapon, so a single weapon’s example should not be mistaken for a universal objective.
- Gold: Complete the weapon’s base camo challenges, then its Gold challenge.
- Platinum: Meet the same-category Gold requirement and complete that weapon’s Platinum challenge.
- Polyatomic: Complete that weapon’s Platinum challenge, earn 51 MWII Platinum camo challenges in total, and complete the weapon’s Polyatomic challenge.
- Orion: Earn 51 Polyatomic camo challenges.
Polyatomic and Orion are animated camos. The threshold of 51 is an overall challenge count, not 51 challenges on every individual weapon. The source does not establish how long these steps take for a player.

Camo unlocks versus Weapon Mastery rewards
Unlocking a completionist camo is not the end of the documented MWII Multiplayer reward track. Activision lists further Weapon Mastery challenges that require kills while using each camo:
| Camo in use | Kills required for its mastery reward |
|---|---|
| Gold | 100 |
| Platinum | 200 |
| Polyatomic | 300 |
| Orion | 400 |
These are Activision’s per-camo MWII reward thresholds, with previous mastery steps as prerequisites—not estimates of total grind or play time. Completing all Weapon Mastery Challenges unlocks the Completionist Charm; the listed mastery rewards also include emblems and calling cards.

What Warzone does—and does not—add
Warzone belongs in this comparison because it is part of the broader Call of Duty play and cosmetic-use context, and official MWII materials connect Warzone 2.0 with MWII seasonal content. But the sources cited here do not set out a separate MWII Warzone track for earning Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, or Orion.

That is a limit of what these official sources document, not proof that no Warzone event ever awarded a camo. It is also important to distinguish earning from equipping: a camo’s appearance in a mode does not by itself show that the mode has its own unlock ladder.

What DMZ challenges mean for camos
DMZ had seasonal content and event objectives that could involve the mode. For example, Activision’s Season 05 Reloaded announcement included a vehicle-camo event objective involving the Armored Truck in DMZ. That supports the narrower conclusion that DMZ was included in some event-specific challenge content.
The reviewed official material does not establish a standing DMZ weapon-camo progression equivalent to the Multiplayer Gold–Orion chain. An event reward, vehicle-camo objective, or seasonal challenge should not be confused with a persistent weapon mastery system.

Do not mix the MWII and MWIII mastery sets
Activision’s November 2023 guide says: “All of the individual Weapon Camos, Completionist Camos, and Weapon Mastery Challenges from Modern Warfare II carry forward into Modern Warfare III.” That carry-forward has limits: MWII completionist camos are designated for MWII weapons, while most MWII base camos can be applied across weapon generations once unlocked.

Those are distinct from the Multiplayer, Warzone, and DMZ comparison.

Availability and what to check in 2026
The requirements above describe the historical MWII/MWIII-era systems documented in Activision’s 2022–2023 materials. They do not verify that the old challenges, DMZ mode, or particular event rewards remain available in the October 2026 game client. For a live unlock, inspect the current in-game challenge menu for the specific weapon and mode rather than assuming a historical event or challenge is still active.
Official sources reviewed also provide no player-population statistics comparing how many people earned or used these camos across Multiplayer, Warzone, and DMZ. They therefore cannot establish which mode’s camo path was most common or easiest for players overall.
