Modern topological classification does not replace Landau’s theory with one universal rule. Landau classification asks whether a phase has a distinct local order parameter produced by spontaneous symmetry breaking. Topological and symmetry-protected classifications ask whether global properties, boundary states, or defect modes remain distinct when the system is continuously deformed without closing a required bulk gap or breaking a protecting symmetry.
The result is a family of conditional tests. To decide whether two phases are equivalent, you must specify the dimension, symmetries, whether the spectrum is gapped, the allowed perturbations, and whether the description is free or interacting. Under one set of assumptions two states may be distinct; change those assumptions and the classification can change.

The short answer: modern criteria add conditions rather than abolish Landau theory
A phase of matter is not classified by a single label that works in every situation. A classification states which deformations count as admissible and which features are required to remain intact. Landau’s framework is built around spontaneous symmetry breaking and the associated order parameter. It remains the natural language for phases whose distinction is local and symmetry-based.

Modern topological approaches enlarge the question. They examine global properties of a many-body state or Hamiltonian, ask whether two states can be connected through a continuous path of allowed Hamiltonians, and track what happens at boundaries, defects, or under symmetry constraints. A topological distinction can survive even when no conventional local order parameter separates the phases.

“Stability” therefore means stability against a specified set of perturbations. In the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) examples discussed by T. Senthil, the relevant conditions include a bulk gap and preservation of the protecting symmetry. A boundary state protected in that setting is not immune to every conceivable disturbance: a perturbation that breaks the symmetry, closes the bulk gap, or changes the phase assumptions can remove the protection.
Yoshimasa Hidaka of the KEK Theory Center summarizes the older starting point in his 2022 review: “The triumphant history of theory on the phase classification and the phase transition can be traced back to Landau, which is based on the spontaneous breaking of symmetry.” Modern classifications extend the questions that can be asked; they do not make this history obsolete.
What Landau’s conventional classification actually tests
Spontaneous symmetry breaking and order parameters
In Landau’s picture, the Hamiltonian may possess a symmetry while the lowest-energy state does not. The phase is described by an order parameter whose nonzero value records the broken symmetry. Distinct patterns of broken symmetry define distinct conventional phases, and a phase transition can be identified by the change in that order.
The order parameter is local in the sense relevant to the theory: it is built from expectation values or correlation functions of local observables. The classification is powerful because it connects symmetry, thermodynamic phases, and transitions within one framework. It also supplies a practical diagnostic: identify the symmetry, determine how the state transforms, and determine whether the order parameter vanishes or acquires a stable value.
What “same phase” means in this framework
Two states are considered the same phase when one can be deformed into the other without crossing a phase transition that changes the symmetry-breaking pattern. If the path restores or changes the broken symmetry, Landau theory treats the endpoint as belonging to a different phase.
Where a symmetry-breaking test is insufficient
Some phases have no conventional local order parameter that distinguishes them. Their important data can be global rather than local, and their most visible signatures may appear at an edge, interface, or defect rather than in the bulk. A symmetry-breaking checklist can therefore place two states in the same conventional category even when they cannot be adiabatically connected under the allowed conditions.
That limitation is not a failure of Landau theory on its own terms. It signals that the phase question requires additional structure: topology of the state space, symmetry action on global degrees of freedom, entanglement properties, or the behavior of boundary and defect modes.

Global data and adiabatic connectivity
Modern classification starts by defining a class of admissible Hamiltonians or states. Within that class, two phases are equivalent if a continuous deformation connects them without encountering the forbidden event specified by the problem. For a gapped classification, the forbidden event is typically closure of the bulk gap. If a protecting symmetry is part of the definition, the deformation must preserve it at every point along the path.

A topological invariant is useful because it cannot change during such an allowed deformation. If two states carry different invariant data, a path between them must leave the class—for example, by closing the gap or violating the symmetry. The invariant is not an unconditional property of an isolated state; it is a property relative to the chosen state space and allowed deformations.
Gapped and gapless systems are both part of the modern picture
The major review by Chiu and collaborators (2016) surveys classifications of fully gapped and gapless systems. It includes nonspatial symmetries such as time reversal, spatial symmetries such as reflection, and gapless modes localized on topological defects. This matters because “topological phase” is not synonymous with “gapped bulk”: some classifications concern protected gapless structures or defect-bound states.
The review develops mathematical tools including homotopy groups, Clifford algebras, K-theory, and nonlinear sigma models. These tools organize the possible Hamiltonians, mass terms, defects, and symmetry actions for a specified dimensionality and symmetry class. They are methods for deriving classifications, not a single universal table that applies without checking assumptions.
The assumptions must be stated before the result
A classification claim should identify at least four pieces of context:
- Dimension: the allowed phases and boundary or defect structures depend on spatial dimension.
- Symmetry: specify which internal or spatial symmetries must be preserved, and how they act.
- Spectral condition: state whether the bulk is required to remain gapped or whether gapless modes are being classified.
- Interaction regime: distinguish noninteracting or mean-field Hamiltonians from fully interacting many-body systems.
Without these qualifiers, a statement such as “the phase is topologically stable” is incomplete. Stability is always stability within a declared class of perturbations and deformations.
SPT phases: a concrete example of conditional protection
Bulk gap, ordinary bulk excitations, nontrivial boundary behavior
Senthil’s 2015 review describes symmetry-protected topological states as having a bulk gap and no exotic excitations in the bulk, while supporting nontrivial surface states protected by symmetry. The bulk can therefore look short-range entangled and featureless to local probes, yet its boundary cannot be removed or trivialized while the defining conditions are maintained.
This is different from saying that every edge state is permanently present under every perturbation. The protection is conditional. A perturbation that preserves the relevant symmetry and keeps the bulk in the required gapped phase may be unable to eliminate the boundary distinction. A symmetry-breaking perturbation can remove the protection, and a bulk gap closing can mark a transition to another phase.

Why the boundary is diagnostically useful
For an SPT phase, the boundary often exposes information that a local bulk order parameter misses. Surface states, edge modes, or defect modes can transform anomalously under the protecting symmetry or cannot be realized as an isolated, symmetry-preserving, gapped boundary of the same type. The observable implication is therefore tied to geometry: the boundary or defect is part of the diagnostic.

SPT is not the same as intrinsic topological order
SPT phases are short-range entangled: after allowing the required symmetry structure, they do not contain intrinsic, long-range-entangled bulk order with exotic bulk excitations. Their unusual boundary behavior depends on symmetry. Removing the symmetry requirement can allow a deformation that trivializes the state.
Long-range-entangled topological order is a different scope. Its bulk can possess intrinsic topological structure and exotic excitations even without a protecting global symmetry. When global symmetry is added to such a phase, the classification problem becomes symmetry-enriched topological order, which has additional data and consistency conditions.
Landau and modern classifications compared
The following comparison is a guide to the questions each framework emphasizes. It is not a binary claim that every phase belongs exclusively to one column; many real systems require more than one description.
| Comparison axis | Landau classification | Topological and SPT classifications |
|---|---|---|
| What distinguishes phases? | Local order parameters and patterns of spontaneous symmetry breaking. | Global invariants, symmetry action, entanglement structure, and protected boundary or defect data. |
| Core assumptions | A specified symmetry and a phase distinction associated with its breaking or restoration. | Specified dimension, symmetries, gapped or gapless condition, and allowed class of Hamiltonians or perturbations. |
| Meaning of stability | The order pattern persists until a transition changes the symmetry-breaking state. | The invariant or boundary distinction persists only while the required symmetry and spectral conditions are retained. |
| Typical observables | Expectation values and correlation functions of local operators. | Boundary or defect modes, global response, topological invariants, and symmetry-constrained spectra. |
| Entanglement scope | Does not by itself classify short-range versus long-range entanglement. | SPT classifications address short-range-entangled states; intrinsic and symmetry-enriched long-range-entangled phases require separate analysis. |
| Interaction dependence | The order-parameter logic is not a free-particle band classification. | Results derived for free or mean-field systems can change after interactions are included. |
How to classify a phase without overclaiming
A reliable analysis follows a sequence rather than jumping directly to a label.
- Define the phase space. State whether you are studying ground states, bands, mixed states, or effective Hamiltonians, and specify the spatial dimension.
- List the required symmetries. Identify internal symmetries such as time reversal and any spatial symmetries such as reflection. Say whether each symmetry must remain exact along the deformation.
- Specify the spectral condition. Decide whether the bulk must remain fully gapped, whether a mobility gap is relevant, or whether the question concerns protected gapless modes.
- Set the interaction regime. Mark the result as noninteracting, mean-field, or interacting. Do not transfer a free-fermion table to an interacting many-body problem without checking.
- Choose the diagnostic. Depending on the class, this may involve an order parameter, a topological invariant, symmetry representations, a boundary calculation, or defect analysis.
- Test an allowed path. Ask whether a continuous, symmetry-preserving deformation keeps the required gap open and remains inside the declared state space. If so, the endpoints are equivalent within that classification.
- Identify the failure mode. If the distinction disappears, determine whether the path broke a protecting symmetry, closed the bulk gap, introduced interactions outside the original model, or changed the dimensional or entanglement assumptions.
This procedure prevents a common error: treating a result as a property of the material alone when it is actually a property of the material plus a set of constraints.
Why interactions can change a modern classification
Many influential classifications begin with noninteracting or mean-field Hamiltonians because their band or single-particle structure is mathematically tractable. Interactions can identify states that look distinct in the free description, permit new many-body processes, or alter which boundary modes can be gapped without violating symmetry.
An Oxford Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics article from 2016 gives a specific example in which an integer classification collapses to ℤ₈ after interactions are included. The example demonstrates that the free result was conditional; it does not establish that every integer classification universally becomes ℤ₈. The correct conclusion is narrower: interaction effects must be checked for the particular symmetry class, dimension, and phase under study.
Accordingly, a statement such as “there are infinitely many phases” should be qualified by the model class that produced it. The interacting classification may retain the distinction, reduce it, or introduce a different structure altogether.

Short-range-entangled SPT phases versus long-range-entangled phases
The SPT framework is comparatively controlled because it focuses on short-range-entangled states whose bulk has no exotic excitations of the intrinsic topological-order type. Symmetry still matters: two states that are equivalent when symmetry is ignored can be distinct when symmetry-preserving deformations are required.
For long-range-entangled topological order with a global symmetry, the problem is harder. Mesaros and Ran (2013) emphasize that its classification was less understood than the short-range-entangled SPT case they analyzed. Additional questions arise about intrinsic excitations, how symmetry acts on them, and whether that action is consistent with a strictly lower-dimensional realization. A classification of symmetry-enriched long-range-entangled phases should therefore not be presented as a routine extension of the SPT table.

A symmetry-preserving, gap-preserving perturbation
If the perturbation remains within the declared symmetry class and the bulk gap stays open, an SPT invariant or protected boundary distinction is expected to persist. This is the situation in which the word “protected” has its intended meaning.
A perturbation that breaks the protecting symmetry
Once the symmetry constraint is relaxed, a boundary state that required that symmetry may be gapped or deformed without contradicting the classification. The state may still have other properties, but the original SPT protection no longer applies.
A perturbation that closes the bulk gap
Gap closure permits the system to pass between distinct gapped phases. At the transition, the invariant can change because the path has left the gapped class. A claim of stability cannot ignore this possibility.
An interaction added to a free model
The original free classification may cease to be the correct one. Recompute the classification in the interacting setting instead of assuming that the free invariant remains complete.

Common misconceptions to avoid
“Topology replaces symmetry.”
Many modern classifications explicitly use symmetry. SPT phases are defined by what remains nontrivial when a protecting symmetry is enforced, and crystalline classifications use spatial symmetries. Topology and symmetry are often combined rather than opposed.
“Topological means immune to all disorder.”
Protection is relative to allowed disorder and perturbations. Disorder that breaks the required symmetry, closes the relevant gap, or invalidates the model can remove the stated protection.
“A topological phase must have a gapped bulk.”
SPT examples generally use a bulk gap, but the broader topological literature also classifies gapless systems and gapless modes bound to defects.

Interactions can modify the result, as illustrated by the context-specific integer-to-ℤ₈ reduction. The interaction regime must accompany every classification claim.
“Every unusual boundary state proves intrinsic topological order.”
An SPT boundary can be nontrivial even when the bulk has no exotic excitations. Boundary behavior alone does not identify whether the bulk is short-range or long-range entangled.
“Landau theory is obsolete.”
Conventional symmetry-breaking phases remain exactly the cases for which order parameters provide the clearest and most economical classification. Modern tools address situations that require additional global or entanglement data.
Which framework should you use?
Use Landau’s approach first when the observed distinction is a local order parameter and the central question is which symmetry is spontaneously broken. It is especially appropriate when the phase transition is visible as the onset or loss of conventional order.

State the symmetry and dimensionality before consulting a classification result.
Use an interacting classification when the system contains important many-body interactions rather than merely weak corrections to a band model. Treat symmetry-enriched long-range-entangled phases as a separate problem rather than assuming that an SPT result transfers unchanged.
In practice, the strongest description can combine frameworks: Landau order may describe one sector of a system while a topological invariant or SPT index describes another. The frameworks answer different questions about what changes under which deformations.
Bottom line
Older classification asks, “What symmetry is spontaneously broken, and what local order parameter records it?” Modern stability rules ask, “Within this dimension, symmetry class, gap condition, and interaction regime, can the state be continuously deformed to another one without losing the defining global or boundary structure?” Those are complementary questions. A phase is “stable” only against the perturbations that the classification permits, so no single modern rule universally supersedes Landau theory.
