Best PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs for Gaming and Everyday Use

A Gen 5 SSD makes most sense with a compatible M.2 slot, suitable cooling, and large-file workloads. For game loading and everyday desktop use, a good Gen 4 drive remains a strong value choice.

For most PC gamers and everyday desktop users, a good PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is still the better-value choice. PCIe 5.0 drives can move very large files faster, but their headline sequential-read speeds do not translate into comparable improvements in game loading or routine desktop responsiveness. Consider Gen 5 if your motherboard has a compatible PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, you regularly work with large sequential transfers, and you can provide suitable cooling. If those conditions are not met, the extra peak speed may go largely unused.

What a Gen 5 SSD changes—and what it does not

PCIe 5.0 doubles the interface bandwidth available over PCIe 4.0, according to SanDisk’s manufacturer brief for the WD_BLACK SN8100. That describes the interface’s potential, not a promise that every application will run twice as fast. A drive’s advertised maximum sequential speed is most relevant when reading or writing large, relatively continuous blocks of data. Everyday tasks and game loading also depend on workload patterns, software, the rest of the system, and how much data is actually being moved.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters when choosing a drive. A game launch may involve many small reads rather than one long transfer, and the storage device may not be the only factor affecting the time a player waits. Newegg Insider’s 2026 buying guide describes the gaming difference between Gen 4 and Gen 5 as minimal and says game load times are already very fast on Gen 4 drives. For gaming-focused shopping, paying extra for a higher sequential-read number alone is therefore a weak reason to upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large video projects and other sustained transfers are a more plausible reason to consider Gen 5: the workload can make better use of sequential bandwidth. Even then, the quoted peak speed is not a guarantee of the speed a particular project will sustain. The available comparisons do not establish universal transfer rates for every drive, system, or workload.

SanDisk describes PCIe 5.0 as delivering “up to twice the interface bandwidth” of PCIe 4.0 in its WD_BLACK SN8100 solution brief. The phrase “up to” matters: it refers to interface bandwidth, not an across-the-board doubling of application performance. For an everyday user, that distinction means the benefits depend on the work being done, not just the interface printed on the drive’s box.

Is PCIe 5.0 worth it for gaming in 2026?

Usually not as a gaming-only upgrade. Newegg Insider’s comparison reports several small differences between Gen 4 and Gen 5 game-loading tests. It attributes an average improvement of 0.05 seconds—roughly one percent—to Tom’s Hardware testing of a current Gen 5 flagship. It also reports figures attributed to PCWorld of 0.44 milliseconds in Counter-Strike and about one second in Cyberpunk 2077. Those results are secondhand reports in Newegg’s article, and the consulted passage does not establish the original test years. Treat them as examples of reported small differences, not as guaranteed results for your PC or proof that every title behaves the same way.

Newegg also reports a Forspoken DirectStorage comparison of 10.483 seconds on Gen 5 versus 10.872 seconds on Gen 4, with Gen 3 at 13.838 seconds. The figures come from Newegg’s comparison; the underlying test details and year are not established in the consulted passage. They suggest that a newer interface can matter in a particular workload, but they should not be read as a general prediction for game load times.

For a gaming-focused buyer, start with the capacity you need and the total price of a suitable drive, then decide whether the remaining premium for Gen 5 is worthwhile. If you primarily want a faster-feeling game library and ordinary desktop use, a capable Gen 4 drive may deliver better value. If large sequential transfers are a regular part of your work, Gen 5 may be useful for that reason even if game loading changes little.

Newegg Insider’s Dylan Cross put the gaming case plainly in the buying guide published June 23, 2026 and updated October 7, 2026: “For gaming, PCIe 5.0 offers minimal benefit over PCIe 4.0. Game load times are already very fast on Gen4 drives.” That is a useful starting point, not a blanket rule for every PC. Someone selecting a new drive for a mixed gaming and creative-work system may value large-file transfers; someone replacing a game drive alone should judge the purchase mainly on capacity and value.

What to check before buying

Confirm the exact M.2 slot supports Gen 5

A PCIe 5.0 SSD needs a compatible PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot to operate at its advertised Gen 5 interface speed. Newegg’s buying guide says that placing a Gen 5 SSD in a Gen 4 slot results in Gen 4 speeds. Check the manual for your exact motherboard model and the specific M.2 slot you plan to use; do not assume every M.2 connector on a board has the same generation or configuration. Also check the drive’s form factor and the slot’s stated compatibility.

Cross-generation compatibility can let a newer drive work in an older slot, but it does not turn that slot into Gen 5. MSI’s 2026 SPATIUM M570 datasheet identifies that model as PCIe Gen5 x4, M.2 2280, and cross-generation compatible. That is a specification for the M570 family, not a substitute for confirming the limits of the motherboard slot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, the question is not simply whether a motherboard has an M.2 connector. Look up the motherboard’s exact model and identify which M.2 slot you intend to use, then check its generation and supported drive format in the manual. If that slot is Gen 4, the drive may still be usable, but it will operate at Gen 4 speeds. If a board has more than one M.2 connector, check the specifications for the particular connector rather than assuming they are equivalent.

Plan for cooling and physical clearance

Gen 5 drives can need adequate cooling, particularly under sustained workloads. Check whether the exact SKU includes a heatsink and whether it will fit beneath the motherboard’s M.2 cover or clear nearby components. A factory heatsink may not fit under a board’s cover; conversely, removing it may not be appropriate unless the drive and board instructions allow it. Verify the physical arrangement before purchase rather than assuming the included heatsink can simply be stacked with the motherboard cooler.

Temperature results depend on the full test setup. PC Gamer measured 55°C for the Corsair MP700 Elite in its own demanding test after removing the drive’s attached heatsink and using the test motherboard’s cooler. That is a result from that configuration, not a promised operating temperature for other PCs, workloads, or installations. MSI’s M570 datasheet specifies an aluminum heatsink, while Newegg’s buying guide recommends adequate cooling for Gen 5 drives under sustained loads.

Do PCIe 5.0 SSDs run hot? They can require more attention to cooling, especially when used for sustained work, but the exact temperature is system-dependent. The MP700 Elite’s 55°C result is one reviewer’s measurement under one setup: the drive’s attached heatsink was removed and the test motherboard’s cooler was used. It is not a universal target or a prediction for a drive installed in a different case. Check the drive’s cooling arrangement, your motherboard’s M.2 cooler, and the installation instructions as a complete set.

Physical fit deserves a check alongside temperature. Confirm whether the drive includes a heatsink, whether the motherboard has a cover or cooler over the M.2 slot, and whether the assembled parts have clearance from nearby components. Follow the instructions for the drive and board; do not assume a factory heatsink should be removed or that two heatsinks can be stacked.

Compare capacity and workload fit, not just the speed label

Peak sequential read speed is only one part of a purchase decision. Compare the capacity of the specific SKU you want, the drive’s positioning and tested behavior, the cooling arrangement, and its cost per capacity using current listings in your region. No live transaction prices or regional availability are established here, so check the retailer and manufacturer listing for the exact model and capacity before ordering.

  • For games and everyday use: prioritize sufficient capacity and value; Gen 5’s sequential headline is unlikely to produce a similar percentage improvement in ordinary game loading.
  • For large-file work: a high sequential rating may be more relevant, but do not assume peak read speed equals sustained real-world project throughput.
  • For a compact or covered M.2 area: compare included heatsink dimensions and the motherboard’s cooler arrangement before choosing a SKU.
  • For an older system: verify slot generation and form factor; a Gen 5 drive installed in a Gen 4 slot will not deliver Gen 5 interface speed.

Capacity and value are especially important if the drive is primarily for games. Compare the cost of the exact capacity you need rather than comparing one model’s largest or fastest variant with another model’s entry-level option. Likewise, do not assume every capacity in a family has the same specifications, heatsink, warranty, or local availability. Check the listing and current manufacturer documentation for the precise SKU.

Gen 5 SSDs to consider

The models below have different evidence-supported strengths rather than a universal ranking. Manufacturer maximums are identified as such; independent-review observations belong to the cited reviewers’ test contexts. Product lineups, SKU details, regional stock, and prices can change, so verify the exact listing before purchase.

Model What stands out What to check
WD_BLACK SN8100 PC Gamer identifies it as a leading gaming-focused Gen 5 option and praises its random 4K performance. SanDisk lists a manufacturer-rated maximum sequential read speed of up to 14,900 MB/s. PC Gamer described the 4TB variant as expensive. Confirm the capacity and current price of the SKU you are considering; the maximum read figure is a manufacturer rating, not an independent result for every workload.
Crucial P510 PC Gamer describes it as a budget-oriented Gen 5 drive with a power-efficient Phison E31T controller and no DRAM cache. Newegg lists up to 10,000 MB/s read for its 2TB option. PC Gamer’s review listed fewer capacities than some alternatives. Check the current lineup and the exact capacity available in your region.
Corsair MP700 Elite PC Gamer identifies cooling as a strength and recorded 55°C in its own demanding test configuration. The same review notes lower sequential speeds than faster alternatives and a 1TB/2TB range at the time of review. Confirm current SKU availability; the review temperature is setup-specific.
Samsung 9100 PRO Newegg’s 2026 comparison lists a 2TB model with up to 14,700 MB/s read and discusses its DRAM, endurance, and warranty specifications. Specific endurance and warranty terms vary by capacity and region. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the precise SKU rather than assuming terms apply across the entire family.
MSI SPATIUM M570 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 HS MSI’s 2026 datasheet specifies PCIe Gen5 x4, M.2 2280, cross-generation PCIe compatibility, and an aluminum heatsink. The datasheet does not provide enough comparative benchmark evidence to rank it against the other drives here. Verify capacity and physical cooler fit for the exact SKU.

WD_BLACK SN8100: prioritize its performance strengths, not just the headline

The SN8100 is the clearest fit among these options for someone seeking a high-performance Gen 5 drive and interested in the random 4K performance PC Gamer praised. SanDisk’s maximum sequential read rating of up to 14,900 MB/s makes its peak capability easy to compare on paper, but it does not establish a matching improvement in game loading. If the computer will mainly host games and everyday applications, weigh the chosen capacity and price against a good Gen 4 alternative before paying for the interface headroom.

  • ✅ 365 Days Protection — Our upgraded 3.0 adhesive ensures a strong hold that won't damage your equipment. Experience reliable, long-term privacy protection day in and day out.

That caveat is particularly relevant to the 4TB option: PC Gamer described that variant as expensive. Treat that as a review-time value observation rather than a current price quote, since transaction prices change. Check the live price for your region and compare it with the cost of a Gen 4 drive at the capacity you actually need. The SN8100’s strongest case is for buyers who want its performance profile and can use the additional sequential bandwidth, not for anyone expecting its maximum read figure to translate directly into faster game launches.

Crucial P510: a more efficiency-minded option

The P510’s power-efficient Phison E31T controller and DRAM-less design give it a different emphasis from models marketed around top-end throughput. Newegg’s up-to-10,000 MB/s read figure applies to the 2TB option it lists. That rating does not by itself establish how the drive performs in every sustained workload. Because the reviewed lineup had fewer capacities, check that the capacity you need is currently offered before comparing it with a larger family.

“Budget-oriented” is a positioning description, not a promise that the P510 is always the least expensive drive in a shop. Compare the exact capacity and current price with other drives rather than relying on the product label. Its efficiency-focused controller and DRAM-less construction are distinguishing attributes, while the available figures do not establish that it is the best choice for every workload or capacity.

Corsair MP700 Elite: consider the whole cooling arrangement

PC Gamer’s review makes cooling the MP700 Elite’s distinguishing point, while also noting that its sequential speeds are lower than those of faster alternatives. Its 55°C observation is useful only with the test details attached: PC Gamer removed the attached heatsink and used the test motherboard’s cooler during a demanding temperature test. It cannot establish how the drive will run in a different case, slot, cooler, or workload. The review described 1TB and 2TB capacities at the time; confirm whether those exact options remain available.

For this model, weigh the cooling review against your own installation plan and the work you expect the drive to do. A temperature from a test bench is not a substitute for checking whether the drive’s included heatsink fits your board. Also compare its capacity and sequential-performance positioning with alternatives: cooling was the review’s strength, not a claim that it leads every speed comparison.

Samsung 9100 PRO: verify the exact capacity’s terms

Newegg’s 2026 comparison lists a 2TB 9100 PRO with up to 14,700 MB/s read and discusses DRAM, endurance, and warranty. The consulted comparison does not establish one set of endurance or warranty terms for all capacities and regions. Use the current manufacturer documentation for the capacity and market you are buying in, and compare the actual terms rather than carrying a specification from one variant over to another.

The up-to-14,700 MB/s figure is attached to the 2TB model listed in that comparison. Confirm the specification for the exact capacity on the current product documentation, and treat the sequential maximum as a rating rather than a guarantee of real-world game performance. Endurance and warranty are useful purchase factors, but only when matched to the specific SKU and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MSI SPATIUM M570: a heatsink-equipped specification

MSI’s 2026 datasheet identifies the SPATIUM M570 PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 HS as a Gen5 x4, M.2 2280 drive with an aluminum heatsink and cross-generation compatibility. Those facts establish form-factor and cooling details, but the available datasheet does not supply enough comparative benchmark evidence to declare it faster or better value than the other drives here. Check whether its heatsink suits your board’s M.2 cover and whether the specific capacity fits your needs.

The “HS” model designation and datasheet’s aluminum-heatsink specification make physical fit an important part of the decision. Confirm whether the motherboard’s M.2 cover can be used with the drive as sold, and follow both manufacturers’ installation directions. Cross-generation compatibility means it can work in compatible older slots; it does not mean an older slot provides Gen 5 performance.

How to choose for your PC

  1. Look up your motherboard model and manual. Identify the exact M.2 slot, its PCIe generation, supported form factors, and any slot-specific constraints. If it is Gen 4, a Gen 5 drive will operate at Gen 4 speeds there.
  2. Define the workload that would use the extra bandwidth. If the drive is mainly for games, apps, and general desktop use, compare the total cost of a suitable Gen 4 drive first. If you frequently move large video projects or other large files, Gen 5’s sequential capability may be a more relevant benefit.
  3. Choose the required capacity before comparing peak speeds. Compare the exact capacity and SKU across the models you are considering. A family’s reviewed or listed capacity range may not match its current regional lineup.
  4. Inspect the cooling and clearance plan. Check whether the drive includes a heatsink, whether your motherboard has an M.2 cooler, and whether the assembly fits without interference. Follow the board and drive instructions for installation.
  5. Check current terms and price for that SKU. Confirm live pricing, stock, warranty wording, and capacity-specific specifications on current listings and manufacturer documentation. These details are not established uniformly across regions or variants.

Common buying mistakes

  • Buying for the largest number on the box: a maximum sequential-read rating does not predict a similar reduction in game load times.
  • Assuming any M.2 slot is Gen 5: M.2 describes a form factor, while the motherboard manual establishes the slot’s interface generation and capabilities.
  • Assuming a heatsink figure transfers to another PC: temperature depends on cooler, airflow, installation, and workload; a reviewer’s measurement belongs to that test configuration.
  • Comparing model names instead of exact SKUs: capacity, heatsink, warranty, and availability can vary within a drive family.
  • Confusing compatibility with full speed: cross-generation support can allow a drive to function in an older slot, but it does not make that slot run at Gen 5 speed.

Frequently asked questions

What motherboard do I need for a PCIe 5.0 SSD?

You need a motherboard with a compatible PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot to use the drive at Gen 5 interface speed. Check the motherboard manual for the exact slot’s generation and supported form factor; do not assume every M.2 connector on a board has the same capability. A Gen 5 drive in a Gen 4 slot operates at Gen 4 speeds.

Will a PCIe 5.0 SSD work in a PCIe 4.0 slot?

Cross-generation compatibility is specified for some drives, including MSI’s SPATIUM M570 family. A compatible drive can work in an older slot, but the slot’s generation still limits the interface speed. Check both the drive’s documentation and the motherboard manual before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PCIe 5.0 worth it for gaming in 2026?

For gaming alone, usually not as a value upgrade. Newegg Insider’s 2026 guide characterizes Gen 4-to-Gen 5 gaming differences as minimal, and the reported game-loading examples are small rather than a broad promise of faster play. Gen 5 makes a clearer case when you also move large files or work with large video projects.

Do PCIe 5.0 SSDs run hot?

They can need adequate cooling, particularly under sustained workloads, but temperature depends on the drive, cooling hardware, installation, and test conditions. PC Gamer’s 55°C MP700 Elite result came from a specific demanding test using the motherboard cooler after removing the drive’s attached heatsink; it is not a universal operating temperature. Check heatsink fit and follow the board and drive instructions.

Should I choose a drive with its own heatsink?

That depends on your motherboard’s M.2 cooling arrangement and the exact drive SKU. Check whether the factory heatsink will fit under the motherboard’s cover and clear nearby components. Do not assume you should remove a supplied heatsink or stack it with the board’s cooler; follow the installation directions for both products.

Which drive is best for game loading?

These comparisons do not establish a universal winner for game loading. PC Gamer praises the WD_BLACK SN8100’s random 4K performance and identifies it as a leading gaming-focused Gen 5 drive, but the broader Gen 4-to-Gen 5 gaming gains remain small in the cited comparisons. If gaming is the only priority, compare capacity and price against a good Gen 4 SSD as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the highest sequential read speed mean the fastest everyday PC?

No. Sequential read speed describes a particular kind of transfer and does not guarantee a similar improvement in game loading or routine desktop response. Compare the workload you actually have, the drive’s capacity and cost, and the system’s compatibility rather than choosing solely by the largest advertised number.
