A mobile banking scam often follows a simple sequence: someone impersonates your bank, pressures you to share a password or one-time code—or install an app—or directs you to a fake site; the criminal then accesses your account or tricks you into authorizing a transfer; finally, money may be moved or you may be locked out. The safest response to an unexpected alert is to verify it through a separate, trusted route—not to judge it by how convincing the message looks.
How a bank impersonation scam turns into account loss
The contact may arrive by text, call or email, or begin with a search result or fake app. The criminal borrows the bank’s name and creates urgency: a suspicious purchase, an account lock, a deposit problem or a request to “verify” information. The FBI describes cases in which the supposed fraud alert sends a customer to a fraudulent login page or a phone number controlled by the scammer.

Once a person provides login details or a one-time passcode, the scammer can use them to sign in, reset credentials or take over the account. Other scams aim to install malware or persuade the customer to move money themselves. A successful takeover can lead to rapid transfers, including wires to accounts controlled by criminals, and a changed password that blocks the customer’s access. The FBI’s November 25, 2025 alert says it received more than 5,100 complaints reporting account-takeover fraud and losses exceeding $262 million since January 2025. Those are IC3 complaints across account-takeover fraud—not a count or loss estimate for mobile-banking scams alone.
Common contact routes and what the scammer wants
| Route | What it can look like | What the criminal may seek |
|---|---|---|
| Text (smishing), email or call (vishing) | A warning about a suspicious transaction, locked account, deposit issue or “verification” request | Login credentials, a one-time passcode, personal details or a transfer |
| Lookalike site or search ad | A page resembling the bank’s sign-in screen, sometimes reached through a message link or a search result | Credentials and codes entered into the fake page |
| Fake banking app | An app imitating the bank that requests unnecessary access or behaves suspiciously | Personal information, stored passwords or access to the device; some fake apps may lock it |
| Multi-person impersonation | One person claims a purchase is fraudulent, then transfers the conversation to someone posing as law enforcement | Account details, codes or cooperation with a money transfer |
The FDIC uses the terms phishing for email or website lures, smishing for texts and vishing for calls. These labels describe the channel, not proof that a contact is genuine or fraudulent. Banks do send alerts; verify an unexpected request independently rather than assuming every alert is a scam or trusting one because it looks authentic.

How to check a message or call safely
- Stop interacting with the contact. Do not tap its link, call the number in the message, reply with a code or follow instructions to install software.
- Open the bank’s app yourself or use a saved bookmark. If you need to call, use the number on your card or statement, or find the bank’s official website independently and get its number there. Do not rely on caller ID; it can be misleading.
- Ask the bank whether the alert or requested action is real. Report the message or call through the bank’s official channel if it is not.
The FBI warns that criminals buy search ads to make fraudulent sites prominent, so a search result is not proof that a page belongs to your bank. Inspect the domain and, when in doubt, leave the page and start again from the official app or a saved bookmark. The CFPB likewise advises consumers who receive an email or text asking them to verify bank information not to use the message to make contact.
Practical steps to reduce your risk
- Protect credentials and codes. Never give a password or one-time passcode to someone who contacted you, and do not enter credentials after following an unexpected message link. The CFPB says banks and credit unions do not ask for account information by text or email.
- Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA). MFA adds a barrier if a password is stolen, but it cannot stop you from handing a code to a scammer or entering credentials on a fake site. The FBI’s November 25, 2025 alert puts it plainly: “MFA will not protect you if you land on a fraudulent login page.”
- Use only the bank’s genuine app. Confirm the app independently before downloading it. Treat unexpected requests for access to contacts, messages, stored passwords or payment information as a reason to stop and check with the bank.
- Monitor transactions and deposits. Watch for unfamiliar withdrawals, wires or spending, as well as deposits that do not arrive as expected. Keep personal information shared publicly to a minimum; scammers may use it to guess passwords or security answers.
What to do if you shared information, installed an app or lost money
- Contact your bank or credit union immediately using a trusted channel. Tell it what you shared, installed or transferred. Ask it to secure the account, block unauthorized access and, if a wire was sent, try to recall or reverse it.
- Change exposed passwords from a trusted device. Change any reused password on other accounts too. Follow the bank’s official instructions for securing access and replacing compromised credentials.
- Report account takeover or a fraudulent wire to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. Preserve the caller’s name and number, email, website addresses and details of any software they asked you to use. Notify the company being impersonated as well.
- Report an unauthorized electronic transfer promptly. The CFPB says a bank generally has 10 business days to investigate after it receives notice, or 20 business days for an account open less than 30 days; provisional credit may apply in specified circumstances. The CFPB’s timelines concern applicable electronic-fund-transfer rules, and the bank’s duties depend on the transfer and circumstances.
- Ask how notice deadlines apply to your situation. Under the CFPB’s description of applicable rules, a person who loses a debit card or has it stolen should notify the institution within two business days to limit liability under the stated rule. After a statement showing an unauthorized withdrawal, the person should notify the bank within 60 days. A stolen security code or PIN has a separate two-business-day instruction. These are not guarantees that a payment a customer was manipulated into authorizing will be reimbursed; report it anyway and get advice promptly.
- Report the phishing attempt to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also lists [email protected] for forwarding phishing emails.
The CFPB’s unauthorized-transfer guidance covers electronic fund transfers that were not authorized by the customer; it is not a blanket recovery guarantee for every scam-induced payment. Whether a transfer was unauthorized or the customer was deceived into initiating it can affect the applicable protections. Give the bank the full facts and ask it to explain which rules apply.
