MLB’s Division Series is a best-of-five playoff round: the first team to win three games advances. In the 2-2-1 format, the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2 and, if needed, Game 5; the lower seed hosts Games 3 and 4 if needed. The series ends as soon as one club wins three games.
How the five-game format works
“Best-of-five” means a team must win three games to take the series. A matchup can therefore end in three, four or five games; a Game 4 or Game 5 is played only if neither team has already clinched.

The home schedule is called 2-2-1 because the games are arranged in blocks: two at the higher seed’s park, two at the lower seed’s park, then a possible final game back at the higher seed’s park. MLB’s official Division Series format FAQ describes it as a best-of-five in a 2-2-1 format, with home-field advantage for the higher seed.

How teams reach the Division Series in 2026
For the 2026 postseason, each league has six teams: three division winners and three Wild Cards. The two highest-seeded division winners receive byes through the Wild Card Series and begin at the Division Series stage. The remaining four clubs in each league play two best-of-three Wild Card Series.

| Wild Card matchup | Division Series opponent |
|---|---|
| No. 3 seed vs. No. 6 seed | Winner faces the No. 2 seed |
| No. 4 seed vs. No. 5 seed | Winner faces the No. 1 seed |
The bracket is fixed: MLB does not reseed teams after the Wild Card Series. That means the Division Series opponents follow the paths above regardless of which Wild Card clubs advance. The winners of the four Division Series matchups move on to the best-of-seven League Championship Series. See MLB’s 2026 postseason FAQ and its explanation of the bracket for the season’s structure.
Division Series vs. Wild Card Series
| Round | Length | Hosting pattern | Who enters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Card Series | Best-of-three | Higher seed hosts all games | Seeds 3–6 in each league; the top two division winners have byes |
| Division Series | Best-of-five | 2-2-1, with the higher seed hosting the first two games and a possible Game 5 | Top two division winners and the four Wild Card Series winners |
The bye is a benefit of earning one of the top two seeds among division winners: those teams skip the Wild Card round and start in the Division Series. The other division winner must play in the Wild Card round, as do the three Wild Cards.

2026 postseason rules and broadcasts
MLB’s 2026 FAQ says the regular-season automatic runner on second base in extra innings is not used in postseason games. Managers begin each postseason game with two replay challenges rather than the regular-season allowance of one. Under the ABS Challenge System, teams also begin with two challenges, keep successful challenges, and a team with none left receives an additional challenge if it begins an extra inning with zero. These are 2026 rules; consult MLB’s current postseason FAQ for the applicable season.

When the Division Series began
The Division Series started in 1995, following MLB’s realignment into three divisions per league the previous year. MLB later added a second Wild Card per league in 2012 and removed the rule that prevented teams from the same division meeting in the Division Series. MLB’s Division Series history outlines those changes.
