MLB’s 2026 postseason has 12 teams: six from each league. Each league’s three division winners are seeded 1–3 by record, ahead of three Wild Cards seeded 4–6 by record. The top two division winners receive byes. If teams finish tied for a playoff place or seed, MLB uses regular-season tiebreaking criteria—not a Game 163.
How the 12-team playoff field is seeded
Each league sends its three division champions and three Wild Cards to the postseason. MLB ranks the division winners against one another by regular-season record, then ranks the Wild Cards against one another by record. A Wild Card does not leapfrog a division winner, even if it finished with a better record.

Wild Card Series
The Wild Card round consists of two best-of-three series in each league: seed 3 hosts seed 6, and seed 4 hosts seed 5. The higher seed hosts every game. The 3-vs-6 winner advances to play seed 2 in the Division Series; the 4-vs-5 winner plays seed 1.

Division Series
The Division Series is best-of-five in a 2-2-1 format, with home-field advantage going to the higher seed.
League Championship Series and World Series
The League Championship Series and World Series are best-of-seven. In the LCS, the higher seed has home-field advantage. In the World Series, home field goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record, regardless of its seed within its league. MLB’s format FAQ sets out these round lengths and assignments.

How MLB breaks a two-team tie
Since the postseason expanded from 10 teams to 12 in 2022, MLB has not used a tiebreaker game to resolve regular-season standings ties affecting qualification or seeding. Instead, it applies the following criteria in order, stopping as soon as one separates the clubs:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Intradivision record. MLB also uses this criterion for a Wild Card tie between teams from different divisions.
- Intraleague record: performance against opponents in the same league.
- Record in the last half of intraleague games. MLB defines this as intraleague games played after the All-Star break, not simply the second half of the full schedule.
- Result of the last game of the first half of intraleague games.
Those criteria are from MLB’s official playoff tiebreaker explainer, dated September 8, 2026. The rule applies to ties for a division title, a Wild Card spot, or seed order.

How three- and four-team ties are handled
Three tied teams
MLB first checks whether one club has a better record against each of the other two. If that does not resolve the order, the procedure examines records among the tied clubs and then additional criteria, including intradivision and intraleague records and the specified sequence of late-season intraleague games. An unresolved tie at an intermediate step can send the procedure to the corresponding two- or three-team rules.
If a three-team tie determines both a division champion and a Wild Card place, MLB determines the division champion first. The remaining clubs then use the two-team procedure for the Wild Card position.
Rank #4
Four tied teams
For one available spot, MLB’s listed sequence starts with each club’s record against each of the other three tied clubs. It then considers winning percentage among the tied teams, intradivision winning percentage, intraleague winning percentage, last-half intraleague winning percentage, and successive last-half-plus-one intraleague games if needed. The official procedure refers back to its two- or three-team process when a step leaves an intermediate tie.
Because multi-team procedures have branches, the correct next step depends on what place is at stake and which clubs remain tied. For a specific three- or four-team scenario, use MLB’s full tiebreaker rules rather than trying to reduce every case to one short formula.

Seeding is category-first, then record-based: division winners take seeds 1–3, and Wild Cards take seeds 4–6. Record determines ordering within those groups, while tiebreakers resolve equal records. That distinction affects byes and the first opponent: only the top two division winners receive byes, and a Wild Card cannot earn one by out-recording a division champion.
MLB’s 2026 postseason FAQ explains the format. The season-specific bracket was confirmed in MLB’s September 27, 2026 bracket announcement.
