Missile-warning satellites and ground-based radar detect different parts of a missile event. Infrared satellites can spot heat from a launch over a broad region, while ground radars use reflected radio waves to track targets and help characterize an attack. Military warning systems combine the two because early detection and detailed tracking are distinct jobs.

How missile-warning satellites work

Satellites in the overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) role look for infrared energy associated with a launch, especially the heat of a missile’s exhaust plume. From orbit, they can observe broad areas without requiring a ground sensor to be near the missile’s path. A detection can alert command systems and cue other sensors. The U.S. Government Accountability Office describes a typical ballistic-missile-defense sequence in which early-warning satellites detect the hot plume, after which land- or sea-based radars are directed to track objects released from the missile.

How ground-based warning radar works

A warning radar actively transmits radio waves and processes energy that bounces back from a target. Phased-array radars can steer their beams electronically by adjusting signals across fixed antenna elements, rather than turning the entire antenna mechanically.

The U.S. Space Force says its Upgraded Early Warning Radars (UEWRs) detect and track intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) attacks. Their data can support warning, attack characterization, object classification and cueing for other systems. The Space Force’s Mission Delta 4 fact sheet describes the unit’s warning mission and systems.

How their roles differ

Question Missile-warning satellite Ground-based warning radar
What does it sense? Infrared energy from a launch, including a hot exhaust plume. Returned radio-frequency energy after the radar transmits a signal.
What part of warning does it support? Can provide early launch detection and cue follow-on sensors. Provides follow-on tracking and can contribute to attack characterization when the target is observable to that radar.
Where does it observe? From orbit over broad regions. From a fixed site, with coverage shaped by the radar’s location, system and mission.
What information does it contribute? Detection information that can alert command systems and cue other sensors. Tracks and other warning data used by command and missile-defense systems.

These are role distinctions, not a universal performance ranking. The sources cited here do not establish comparable figures for warning time, range or accuracy across satellite and radar classes. Actual performance depends on the particular system, target, geometry, coverage and mission.

Examples of ground-based missile-warning radars

Upgraded Early Warning Radars

The Space Force lists UEWR coverage as 240–360 degrees. That is a system-specific description, not a claim about every ground radar; individual sites and missions are oriented toward particular threat approaches. UEWR warning and attack-characterization data goes to national warning and command centers, and selected radars also provide tracking data to the Ground-based Midcourse Defense fire-control system. See the Space Force’s Mission Delta 4 fact sheet.

PAVE PAWS

PAVE PAWS is a ground-based phased-array radar system that can detect submarine-launched ballistic missile attacks and conduct space surveillance and satellite tracking. Its electronic beam steering changes the phase of signals instead of physically moving the antenna. The Space Force describes the system in its Mission Delta 4 fact sheet.

PARCS

The Perimeter Acquisition Radar Characterization System (PARCS), at Cavalier, North Dakota, is a UHF-band phased-array radar. Its primary mission is to watch for sea-launched and intercontinental ballistic missiles and collect launch and predicted-impact data. The Space Force provides these details in its Mission Delta 4 fact sheet.

Which detects a missile launch first?

Infrared satellites can provide early launch detection, while radar commonly supplies follow-on tracking. That does not mean a satellite is always first in every scenario: timing depends on the sensors involved and the geometry of the event. The useful distinction is that satellites can detect launch heat over broad areas, while a radar must be able to observe the target from its location and coverage area.

Why use both satellites and radar?

The sensors are complementary. A satellite’s launch detection can prompt a response and cue other sensors; radar can then track targets and provide information that helps characterize an attack or support missile defense. The U.S. Space Force says Mission Delta 4 operates both OPIR satellite constellations and ground-based radars for strategic and theater warning, an example of how the capabilities fit within one warning architecture.

What is changing in space-based missile tracking?

The Space Development Agency is developing systems in low Earth orbit that include both space- and ground-based elements to detect and track potential missile threats. In a report issued in January 2026 and reissued with revisions on February 2, 2026, the Government Accountability Office reported delivery risks, including overestimates of readiness for some critical elements and additional contractor work that added schedule delay. These are development efforts; the report does not establish that every planned capability is already operational.
