For most used buyers, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A is the better choice—but “Galaxy Tab A” covers many models. This comparison uses the Verizon Galaxy Tab A 8.4-inch (SM-T307U), not every Tab A generation. Its documented 32 GB of internal storage and newer hardware make it a more practical starting point than the Verizon Ellipsis 7, whose 8 GB storage has a significant app-installation limitation. A used tablet’s actual condition and carrier eligibility still need to be checked.
Which tablet is better for a used buyer?
The Galaxy Tab A 8.4-inch Verizon (SM-T307U) is the stronger provisional pick for general use. Samsung’s 2020 datasheet specifies Android 9 Pie, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot rated for cards up to 512 GB. Verizon’s Ellipsis 7 support information describes 8 GB of onboard storage and says apps cannot be moved to an SD card. That makes the Ellipsis a much tighter fit for installing apps.

Which Galaxy Tab A does this comparison cover?
“Galaxy Tab A” is a product line, not one exact device. The reference model here is the Verizon Galaxy Tab A 8.4-inch, model SM-T307U. Samsung lists its Android 9 Pie software, 8.4-inch 1920 × 1200 TFT display, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage, Verizon LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C, microSD expansion up to 512 GB and 5,000 mAh rated battery capacity in its model-specific datasheet.

What the Ellipsis 7’s storage limit means
Verizon’s support notice says the Ellipsis 7 has 8 GB of onboard memory and that apps cannot be moved to an SD card. A memory improvement was available for some earlier software versions through a support-assisted path, but that historical information does not confirm that the process or support is available now. The practical point for a buyer is to check the tablet’s actual free internal space and software version rather than assuming an SD card will solve app-storage constraints.

What to check before buying either tablet
- Verify the exact model and software. Ask for a clear photo of Settings > About tablet. On the Ellipsis 7, Verizon’s user guide explains where to find model number, Android version, software version, hardware version and status. For this Samsung comparison, confirm the listing is SM-T307U.
- Confirm carrier status before paying for LTE. Ask whether the device is carrier-locked and whether it can be activated on the intended network. Samsung’s specification that the SM-T307U supports Verizon LTE does not guarantee that an individual used unit is eligible for service today.
- Test basic function in person or request a demonstration. Check charging, touch response across the screen, Wi-Fi, speakers, cameras and battery behavior away from the charger. These checks help assess the particular unit; published specifications cannot reveal its condition.
- Prefer a return option when condition is uncertain. A return window gives you a way to address faults that are not visible in listing photos or cannot be tested before purchase.
When the Ellipsis 7 may still make sense
The Ellipsis 7 is a narrower choice, but it may suit a buyer who has a specific legacy task in mind, has verified that the required software works on the actual device, and can accept its limited onboard app storage. Its historical KitKat update notice is not evidence that update servers remain available or that modern apps will work.
For a general-purpose used tablet, the documented Tab A model offers more room for apps and storage expansion on paper. Choose based on the exact model and working condition, not just the family name or a claim that a tablet is “updated.”
