How MINIGRAPH’s Magnetic Robot Is Designed to Place Graphene Implants in the Brain

MINIGRAPH paired graphene neural-interface development with a robot-assisted implantation concept. Its magnetic carrier is intended to steer placement from outside the body, not control the implant after insertion.

MINIGRAPH’s magnet is designed to steer a graphene neural implant during robotic placement—not to control it after it is inside the brain. The EU-funded project developed a minimally invasive implantation concept alongside graphene electrodes and electronics for recording brain activity and delivering stimulation. Its reported results are engineering and animal-model work, not proof of a treatment that works in people.

How does the magnetic steering concept work?

ICN2 describes a magnetic carrier that lets an operator steer the implant from outside the body during a robot-assisted implantation procedure. In other words, the magnet is part of the delivery and positioning approach: it is intended to help guide the implant to its placement site through a small skull incision. The description does not establish that magnetic fields steer or control the implant therapeutically after placement. ICN2’s project announcement describes the carrier and the intended procedure.

The implant’s neural interface is a separate part of the system. Graphene microelectrodes are intended to record neural activity and deliver electrical stimulation, while integrated electronics support those functions. MINIGRAPH’s stated goal was to combine that interface with closed-loop neuromodulation: a system that can use recorded signals to inform stimulation. The project described potential applications including Parkinson’s disease and other neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders, but these were aims, not demonstrated patient benefits. The European Commission’s CORDIS project record outlines the project’s objectives.

What did MINIGRAPH report building?

MINIGRAPH was a European Innovation Council Pathfinder research project coordinated by the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2). CORDIS lists project dates of 1 October 2022 to 30 June 2026 and an EU contribution of €4,428,402.50. The project record marks it closed; these details describe a funded research effort, not a product launch.

In its first reporting period, covering 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023, the project reported first-generation graphene neural probes and a designed and simulated application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The proposed ASIC had 16 independent stimulation channels and 240 recording channels. The same report described an initial robotic-system concept and magnetic carrier, plus tests in an acute porcine model involving synchronized recording, closed-loop stimulation and behavioral metrics. It also reported demonstrating a real-time dataflow incorporating machine-learning models in that model. These are project-reported development results, not clinical outcomes. CORDIS’s periodic reporting provides the reporting-period details.

How small is the implant?

A Fraunhofer IZM account dated 30 September 2026 reports an overall implant thickness of 100 micrometers. It says the thinned ASIC and 17 capacitors together measured 70 micrometers. The account describes graphene electrodes, a nanopore-gold layer, and packaging using biocompatible parylene and aluminum oxide, as well as a robot-supported implantation process designed by project partners. Those dimensions and construction details are reported project outputs; they do not by themselves establish safety, clinical readiness or patient benefit. Fraunhofer IZM’s account gives the materials and dimensions.

Does this mean the implant is ready to treat patients?

No human efficacy results or regulatory authorization are established by the cited project materials. The CORDIS reporting describes engineering development and acute animal-model work. Fraunhofer’s account and MINIGRAPH’s results page describe project outputs and a path toward future clinical adoption, not a treatment proven in people or a commercially available implant. The project’s results page frames the work as contributing to foundations and pathways for future clinical adoption.

That distinction matters: a prototype can demonstrate that components or a procedure work under development conditions without showing that the complete system is safe and effective in patients. The project’s intended applications should therefore be understood as research goals rather than available treatment options.

What makes this approach different from brain stimulation already in use?

The useful comparison is about how a system is delivered and what it can do—not patient outcomes, which the available MINIGRAPH sources do not establish. To compare this concept with another brain-stimulation approach, consider:
