‘500-Hour’ Order of the Sinking Star: What the Estimate Actually Means

Order of the Sinking Star is not a 500-hour requirement. Director Jonathan Blow gave that figure as an estimate for a typical player trying to complete everything, and explicitly said it was not a promise. The game’s reported design does sound expansive: it combines puzzle systems across six connected worlds, but reaching the endgame does not require clearing every area.

What does the 500-hour estimate mean?

It is a pre-release estimate for completionist play, not a measured average or the time needed to finish the story. In a December 12, 2025 preview, PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens quoted director Jonathan Blow: “This is not a promise of any kind, but we estimate that, for a typical player, if they were to be a completionist, it might be around 500 hours of gameplay.”

The distinction matters: the estimate describes a player trying to complete everything, while the preview says players can reach the endgame meter and leave without clearing the entire overworld. The available sources do not establish a verified post-launch completion-time average or dataset.

How long might a normal playthrough take?

An Order of the Sinking Star fan guide updated September 24, 2026 reports an estimate of up to 250 hours for normal-pace play and says the story does not require solving every puzzle. The guide attributes the figure to an IGN interview dated December 11, 2025, but that original interview was not verified here; treat 250 hours as a reported estimate, not a confirmed benchmark.

The two figures refer to different goals, and neither is measured player data:

Play goal Reported time What the figure represents
Progress through the story at a normal pace Up to 250 hours Estimate reported by an unaffiliated fan guide; attributed there to an IGN interview, not independently verified.
Completionist play Around 500 hours Jonathan Blow’s pre-release estimate, quoted by PC Gamer; explicitly not a promise.

Why is the game described as complex?

The complexity comes from the reported combination of puzzle mechanics, rather than from a single puzzle type. In the hands-off preview, Blow said the team began with four self-contained games and combined them so objects from different worlds could interact. He described the design goal as bringing the systems together to explore the resulting “large possibility space.”

The preview describes an overworld with six worlds, with more of its map revealed as players progress. Its examples include block-pushing puzzles and colored-beam puzzles, alongside character abilities that change how movable objects behave. More than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles is a figure in the game’s official store description as reported by PC Gamer; it is a product-description claim, not an independently counted total.

Does the scale make it exhausting?

For players who want to solve every puzzle and explore every area, hundreds of hours is an unusually large commitment, and the interaction between systems may make that pursuit demanding. But “exhausting” is a possible reaction to the scale, not an established consensus: the cited PC Gamer piece is a preview based on a short hands-off demo, not a full-game review or an independent difficulty assessment.
