The result shows a selection effect under the conditions studied—not that RNA replicated on minerals or that life began there.
What the experiments found
Researchers tested a random mixture of RNA molecules of different lengths with calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and hydroxyapatite in the presence of magnesium ions. For all five minerals, longer RNA became enriched on the surface relative to the surrounding solution, according to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s 2019 report (JSPS report).

One reported comparison gives a sense of the effect’s scale: at 48°C, 24-nucleotide RNA (24-mer) was selected about nine times more than 8-mer RNA. That is a result for the reported conditions, not a universal ratio for every mineral or experimental setup.
Why longer RNA accumulated on the surfaces
The study’s thermodynamic model offers an explanation based on adsorption. Longer RNA gains more energy from binding to a mineral surface, while the model treats the entropy cost of moving onto the surface as independent of RNA length. Together, those factors can favor longer molecules at the surface. The model matched the observed experimental pattern, and the authors argued that physical features of a surface—not the chemical identity of one particular mineral—could underlie the tendency (Chemical Communications paper).

Study author Ryo Mizuuchi said the finding that mineral surfaces could select longer RNA “at least to some extent” surprised him. The combination of a physical model and experiments supports a mechanism for enrichment; it does not establish how often that mechanism operated in early-Earth environments.
What this could mean for prebiotic chemistry
Preferentially collecting longer molecules could have helped concentrate RNA of greater length in some prebiotic settings. The idea broadens the range of environments considered for RNA selection beyond hydrothermal-vent settings, where thermal diffusion and convection have been discussed as possible selection mechanisms. These are proposed routes to molecular selection, not interchangeable demonstrations of life’s origin (Chemistry World feature).

Why enrichment is not the same as RNA evolution
Adsorption can also immobilize RNA. If a molecule is held tightly on a surface, it may have less mobility and fewer opportunities to encounter other molecules or take part in reactions. The researchers noted the difficulty of identifying RNA that functions while adsorbed, and the Chemistry World feature highlights this limitation. A surface that favors the accumulation of longer RNA therefore need not be a suitable setting for RNA catalysis, replication or evolution.

What the study does—and does not—show
- Shown: Under the reported conditions, each of five tested minerals enriched longer RNA on its surface relative to the surrounding solution.
- Proposed explanation: Length-dependent adsorption energetics, combined with a length-independent entropy penalty in the model, can produce that selection pattern.
- Not shown: The experiments do not establish that adsorbed RNA replicated, that the effect led to life, or that mineral surfaces caused life to originate.
