What is a Minecraft Java snapshot?
A snapshot is a testing release of Minecraft: Java Edition. Snapshots let players try changes before a later release, and each snapshot has its own release notes. The changes, features, and technical details can differ from one snapshot to another.

For example, Mojang’s Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 8, published August 12, 2026, included changes to Realm invite codes and the World Options screen. That release listed data pack version 116.0 and resource pack version 96.0; those identifiers apply to Snapshot 8, not to snapshots in general.

- Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations.
- Enable snapshots in the Installations tab, then select a snapshot installation to play it.
- Before starting a world, read the release notes for the exact snapshot you selected. The notes explain what changed in that build.
This is Mojang’s guidance for Java Edition. It does not establish the same Launcher process for Bedrock Edition. Mojang’s snapshot instructions also recommend backing up or running testing versions in a folder separate from your main worlds; simply selecting a snapshot should not be treated as proof that your saves are isolated.

Can a snapshot corrupt your world?
Yes, corruption is possible. Mojang’s snapshot guidance says: “Testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.” The warning is explicit, but the guidance does not quantify how likely corruption is or describe a universal recovery method.
For a world you value, make an independent backup before testing. Keep that backup untouched, and open a separate copy of the world in the snapshot. A fresh test world is another option if you only want to explore the new build without risking a save you already use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you open a snapshot world in an older version?
Do not assume that changes made while testing can be reversed, or that an older Minecraft version can safely open a world after a newer testing version has saved it. Mojang’s reviewed snapshot guidance does not provide a universal downgrade guarantee. Preserve the untouched backup rather than relying on an older version to restore the test save.

Choose a safer way to test
| Approach | When it fits | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Use a fresh world | You want to explore snapshot changes without testing an existing save. | It avoids exposing your main world to the test, but won’t show how changes affect that existing world. |
| Use a copy of an existing world | You want to see how the snapshot behaves with a world you already play. | Back up the original separately and open only the copy in the snapshot. |
| Run the test in a separate folder | You want added separation between testing and main worlds. | Mojang recommends a different folder; do not assume every Launcher setup isolates saves automatically. |
| Read the exact release notes | You need to know what a particular snapshot changes before trying it. | Snapshot contents vary by release, so notes for another build may not describe the one you selected. |
