Microsoft has set out work on performance, reliability and interface quality, and changes have arrived in stages. A six-month PCWorld report card gives Search and reduced Copilot prominence favorable marks, but sees Start and performance on 8GB PCs as ongoing concerns. Microsoft’s own release-health page also continues to list issues affecting particular configurations.
What Microsoft set out to improve
Microsoft’s July 31, 2026 update, written by Windows chief Pavan Davuluri, framed the effort around three priorities: performance, reliability and well-crafted experiences. The company said many improvements had been rolling out to Windows Insiders and would begin reaching Windows 11 PCs more broadly in the fall. That wording matters: an Insider preview or a phased rollout is not the same as a change already available to every user.

Microsoft highlighted a calmer Windows Search home screen, clearer results and the removal of promotional content from web results. It also described work on WinUI 3, memory efficiency and latency. Those statements describe Microsoft’s goals and account of its work, not independent measurements of how much faster or more reliable Windows has become. Davuluri acknowledged that availability would take time: “We know there is more to do, especially in getting these improvements to all customers. We’re not slowing down.” Microsoft’s July quality update

This has been a rolling program rather than one major makeover. Microsoft’s update documentation shows incremental improvements arriving through cumulative updates and gradual rollouts. For example, File Explorer responsiveness improvements for mounting disk images entered gradual rollout on June 23; later updates brought additional fixes and changes. With phased delivery, two PCs on the same Windows release may not receive a change at the same time. Microsoft’s June cumulative update documentation

PCWorld’s October 1 report card describes 26H2 as a progress report that gathers changes delivered incrementally in monthly updates. The reviewer says September brought taskbar positioning and sizing controls and more Start menu customization, but judges their practical impact limited. The earlier July TechRadar assessment is useful as a snapshot of proposals and testing-stage work—including taskbar repositioning, Start customization, faster installation work, a Driver Quality Initiative and restore capability—but it should not be read as proof that each item had shipped broadly by the six-month mark.
The six-month report card
PCWorld’s grades are one writer’s editorial rubric, not measured results for Windows users as a population. They are useful as a concise assessment of where the campaign feels most and least convincing so far.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
| Area | Six-month assessment |
|---|---|
| Search | A− from PCWorld’s reviewer; the planned direction is a calmer home screen and clearer, less promotional results. |
| Start | C from PCWorld’s reviewer; September customization options were judged to have limited impact. |
| Copilot | PCWorld says Microsoft has done a decent job keeping Copilot in its lane. |
| Performance on 8GB PCs | PCWorld calls it a work in progress; the report card does not establish a population-wide performance improvement. |
The overall picture is mixed-positive: there are visible interface changes and a change in emphasis, but the evidence does not show that the most persistent complaints have been resolved. PCWorld’s six-month report card

What “26H2” does—and does not—mean
Windows Central describes 26H2 as an enablement package that gathers changes delivered over the preceding year, rather than a standalone feature transformation. In other words, the campaign’s six-month timeline and the 26H2 release label are related but not interchangeable: many improvements arrive before the release label gathers them. The same report gives support periods of 24 months for Home and Pro and 36 months for commercial editions after installation. Those lifecycle periods are reported by a secondary outlet and can affect upgrade planning; check Microsoft’s current lifecycle information for the specific edition before making a decision based on a support end date.
Known issues are a reason not to call Windows 11 fixed
Microsoft’s 26H2 release-health page remained active and listed several issues with limited scopes, rather than problems affecting every Windows 11 PC:

Microsoft’s page describes mitigations or work toward resolutions for these cases. The practical lesson is not that every user should expect these failures, but that the release still has configuration-specific problems under active management. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the company’s FY26 Q3 earnings call that it was “focused on fundamentals, prioritizing quality and serving our core users better.” He also cited performance work for lower-memory devices, a streamlined Windows Update experience and renewed attention to core features. These remarks establish the company’s stated emphasis, not a quantified campaign outcome. The sources here provide no campaign-wide statistic or independent longitudinal measure showing how much reliability or performance improved. Microsoft FY26 Q3 earnings call
That distinction is central to judging the six-month effort. A list of changes shows activity; a gradual rollout shows that delivery is still in progress; a reviewer’s grades offer an informed but subjective read of impact. None alone proves that Windows 11’s broader quality problems have been solved.
Verdict: progress, not a clean bill of health
Microsoft has made the quality campaign visible through incremental updates, interface adjustments and a clearer stated focus on performance and reliability. PCWorld’s six-month assessment suggests some choices—particularly Search and keeping Copilot less prominent—are moving in a favorable direction, while Start and 8GB-PC performance remain unresolved in that reviewer’s judgment. Ongoing, scoped issues on Microsoft’s release-health page reinforce the more careful conclusion: Windows 11 is being worked on, but “fixed” goes beyond what the available evidence establishes.
