Some old gadgets can do useful work long after their original role has faded—but only if community software supports the exact model. An old router might become a local library box, an e-reader a dashboard, or a phone a small home server. These are practical possibilities, not universal upgrades: check compatibility, back up what matters, and understand the risks before changing firmware or software.
Before repurposing an old gadget, check its exact model
Community projects can extend a device’s usefulness, but they cannot make unsupported hardware compatible. Match the model number and, where relevant, hardware revision to the project’s supported-device information before installing anything. The documentation for OpenWrt hardware hacking and okreader illustrates why compatibility must be checked rather than assumed.

- Back up data and original firmware or storage where the project recommends it. The Kobo Mini dashboard workflow kept the original microSD card for rollback, and okreader advises backing up the factory SD card before changing partitions.
- Read installation instructions for the specific device. Firmware changes, jailbreaking, or replacing an operating system can erase data, affect device security or warranty, or leave some hardware functions unavailable.
- Consider physical condition as well as software support. An aging battery or storage device may make a repurposed gadget unreliable; a phone left on continuous power also needs attention to battery condition.
1. Turn a compatible router into a local library box
OpenWrt documents hardware-hacking projects for compatible routers, including a PirateBox or LibraryBox setup. The idea is to use a router to host a local collection of files that nearby users can access over its network, rather than relying on the router only for internet access.

OpenWrt’s instructions involve configuration changes, and firmware installation depends on the specific device. Check the model and hardware revision against the project documentation before attempting an installation; the project’s PirateBox and LibraryBox documentation is a starting point, not a promise of universal support.

2. Use a Kobo Mini as an information dashboard
A Makerspace Online project describes repurposing a Kobo Mini as a kiosk that displays internet information and local data from home-automation, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi nodes. The e-ink screen and compact form factor make it a different kind of dashboard from a tablet or phone.
The author’s workflow was specific to the Kobo Mini: it used a removable microSD card, preserved the original card for rollback, and tested a dual-boot setup. The author notes that the process varies by model, so do not treat the instructions as general Kindle or Kobo guidance. Read the Kobo Mini dashboard project and verify your exact model before changing its software.

3. Try a small Linux system on a supported Kobo
The open-source okreader project offers another route for some Kobo readers: free/libre software that can turn a supported e-reader into a small Linux device or an alternative reading platform. Its repository lists the Kobo Touch, Kobo Mini, and Kobo Aura among tested devices.

That list is not a guarantee for other models. The project warns that other devices may need kernel or bootloader patches, and it describes itself as early-stage—not a mature, universal replacement operating system. Its documentation recommends backing up the factory SD card before changing partitions, which gives you a recovery option if the installation does not work as intended.

4. Make an old Android phone a low-power home server
A documented community build uses postmarketOS on a Samsung Galaxy S10+ model SM-G975F with an Exynos 9820 processor. The author configured it for local file sharing, a web file manager, DNS ad blocking, monitoring, remote access, and encrypted backups. That is a substantial set of server tasks from hardware that might otherwise sit unused.
The author reports measurements for that one finished build: 0.39 W idle power draw; file-transfer speeds of 60.8 MB/s write and 49.3 MB/s read over 5 GHz Wi-Fi using SSH; and roughly a day of battery life unplugged. These are project-specific observations, not controlled comparisons or general smartphone performance figures. The Phone as a Homelab guide also warns that model support matters, installation erases data, Samsung Knox and warranty consequences may apply, and Docker has architecture limitations. It flags swelling risk from continuous charging, so inspect the battery and avoid treating a phone as an unattended server without considering its condition and power setup.

5. Revive a music player or older Apple device
Legacy music players and Apple devices have distinct community-software paths. The community hardware index lists projects such as Rockbox for supported music players; a separate current repository describes Rockpod, a Rockbox-derived firmware for iPod Classic and Video models. Support and features differ by generation, so check the exact player rather than assuming one firmware works across the iPod line.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Older iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads have a different option: Surf provides modern web browsing on specified older models by rendering pages on a computer and streaming them to the device. It requires a rootful jailbreak and supports only stated combinations of operating system and hardware. That makes it a remote-rendering workaround, not the same kind of replacement firmware as Rockbox or Rockpod. Check Rockpod’s model information and Surf’s requirements before deciding whether either path fits your device.

Which project is the best fit?
| Device | Documented use | Compatibility and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Router | Local PirateBox or LibraryBox | Compatible OpenWrt router required; firmware and configuration vary by device. |
| Kobo Mini | Dashboard or kiosk for online and local information | The cited workflow is model-specific and uses a removable microSD card; keep the original for rollback. |
| Kobo Touch, Mini, or Aura | Early-stage Linux-based system or alternative reading platform | These models are listed as tested; other models may need patches. Back up the factory SD card. |
| Samsung Galaxy S10+ SM-G975F, Exynos 9820 | Home-server services including file sharing and monitoring | Reported results apply to this build; installation erases data, and model, Knox, architecture, and battery issues matter. |
| Supported legacy music player or specified older Apple device | Rockbox/Rockpod firmware, or Surf browser streaming on eligible Apple devices | These are different approaches with model-specific support; Surf requires a rootful jailbreak. |
Use the table to narrow down a project, not to rank the devices: the available project pages do not establish comparable measures of installation difficulty, update status, reliability, or performance across all five categories.
