His graphic designs—often called “Okudagrams” by fans and closely associated with LCARS displays—helped give the franchise’s screens and props a consistent visual language. He began with sketches he mailed to Paramount; decades later, he helped rebuild the Enterprise-D bridge for Star Trek: Picard.
How a mismatch on the Enterprise led to a Star Trek job
Okuda was working in corporate graphics when he noticed a design problem aboard the Enterprise: its round screens were being shown with rectangular information layouts. For his own amusement, he sketched graphics shaped to suit the circular displays and mailed the drawings to Paramount. Producer Ralph Winter later offered him work on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

That film was his first Star Trek job. A later encounter with Gene Roddenberry, who invited him to consider the newly announced Star Trek: The Next Generation, led to his work on the series. The official Star Trek interview recounts how the unsolicited sketches became an entry point into production design (StarTrek.com interview).
What Okudagrams and LCARS graphics do
On screen, a display has to read quickly and feel native to the fictional world. Okuda’s graphics gave consoles, screens, labels and other prop details a recognizable visual identity. The often-used fan term “Okudagrams” refers to the graphic designs associated with his work; LCARS is the familiar interface language seen across many Star Trek displays.

Okuda described the broader contribution this way: “I think the biggest contribution was as graphic artist for ‘Star Trek,’ simply because ‘Star Trek’ had such an impact. And ‘Star Trek’ was one of the first shows that understood that graphics really helped define the universe.” (Space interview, October 5, 2026.)
How the graphics work changed across the shows
Okuda says he led graphics design from The Next Generation through Enterprise. The work grew along with the productions: from labels and graphic details on props to animated displays used on set and graphics added in post-production. These are different tasks, even when they contribute to the same impression of a coherent future.

The visual world was also a collaboration, not the work of one artist. The official account of the production names designers including Herman Zimmerman and Richard James alongside other artists and designers. Okuda’s contribution was the graphic layer within a larger process of shaping sets, props and costumes (StarTrek.com interview).

He also recalls helping rebuild the Enterprise-D bridge for season 3 of Picard. Production designer Dave Blass called former collaborators back together, and Okuda says the team rebuilt the bridge from scratch. “And you know, they say you can’t go home again, but just for a moment you could. Oh, it was so wonderful.” The moment captures how production design can reconnect the people who made a set with the world it helped audiences imagine (Space interview, October 5, 2026).
Why the production history matters
A familiar bridge or prop may carry traces of earlier productions. Sets, props and costumes can be reused or redressed, so what appears to be a seamless fictional world is often built from a real history of practical production choices. The graphic design helps make those pieces feel as though they belong together, but it works alongside the contributions of set designers, prop makers, costume teams, directors and other artists.

The Space interview appeared as Star Trek marked its 60th anniversary in 2026; its description of Okuda’s involvement as a “four-decade mission” is an anniversary framing, not a precise employment-duration measure. Okuda’s own summary of the franchise’s hopeful outlook was: “I think that’s the thing that I try not to lose sight of.”
