MetaMask helps secure access to a wallet and flags some risky transaction requests, but it does not take custody of your funds or guarantee that a transaction is safe. You are responsible for your recovery credentials and for what you approve. A hardware wallet adds a physical signing step; it cannot make a deceptive approval harmless. If funds are lost in an on-chain transaction, MetaMask says it cannot reverse the transaction or restore them.
What MetaMask security does—and does not—mean
MetaMask is a self-custodial wallet. Its controls can help you manage access and make more informed transaction decisions, but they do not remove your responsibility for protecting credentials, checking requests, and choosing which transactions to sign. Security alerts are warnings, not a guarantee that every threat will be detected or blocked.

The most important distinction is between safeguards that help you control access and safeguards that help you assess a request. Recovery credentials determine who can access accounts; alerts and simulations provide information about an action you may be asked to authorize. Neither can undo an unsafe decision after it has been confirmed on-chain.

Your recovery arrangement depends on how you set up the wallet. The Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) is the master recovery credential for accounts derived from it. Anyone who gets the phrase can control those accounts. MetaMask recommends writing it down and keeping it in a secure physical location rather than an internet-connected cloud file. Never share it, even with someone claiming to be support. See MetaMask’s guide to securing your Secret Recovery Phrase and password.

If you created the wallet with an SRP
The password unlocks MetaMask locally on that device; it is not a substitute for the SRP when restoring the wallet. If you lose access to the device, the SRP is what restores the accounts derived from it. MetaMask states, “MetaMask cannot recover your wallet for you.”
If you set up with Google, Apple, or Telegram
MetaMask also documents a setup in which the SRP is generated and backed up in encrypted shards. Access depends on the linked Google, Apple, or Telegram account together with the MetaMask password. This is a different recovery path from a wallet created directly with an SRP, so do not assume that every user has the same password or backup arrangement.
An SRP and an account private key are not interchangeable
The SRP can restore accounts derived from it. Each account has its own private key, which controls that individual account rather than every account in the wallet. Exporting one account’s private key is therefore not equivalent to backing up the SRP. MetaMask explains this distinction in its guide to revealing the Secret Recovery Phrase and private keys.

How alerts, trust signals, and transaction simulations help
MetaMask’s trust signals can help match a token, address, or website to a recognized identity. A Verified badge is not an endorsement or a promise that an interaction is safe; an absent badge, by itself, does not prove that something is dangerous. Alerts draw on indicators such as known phishing domains, scam reports, contract behavior, transaction patterns, impersonation signals, and community or ecosystem reports.
When security alerts are enabled, MetaMask says EVM activity is checked through MetaMask and non-EVM activity through Blockaid. A simulation may identify a transaction that could lead to loss, but simulations do not detect every threat. MetaMask says, “Security alerts are designed to inform your decision — MetaMask does not prevent you from proceeding with a transaction.” You can still confirm a request despite a warning. Read MetaMask’s security-alert guidance.
For these security checks, MetaMask says the information sent can include the dapp URL, JSON-RPC method, chain ID, and transaction data. It says SRPs, private keys, and other credentials are not shared with security providers. Alert classifications can change as threat intelligence is updated. Treat a warning as a reason to stop and investigate, not as a complete account of every possible risk.

What a hardware wallet adds
A hardware wallet keeps signing keys away from the computer and requires interaction with the device to approve a transaction. That extra physical step can help prevent someone who only gains access to MetaMask on the computer from moving assets secured by the hardware wallet. It does not guarantee that a transaction, website, contract, or signature is safe: a user can still approve a harmful request.

Its guide says the listed hardware wallets can be used with Extension; Keystone, Ledger, and NGRAVE ZERO are also supported on Mobile. Compatibility can change, so check the current hardware-wallet guide for the device and MetaMask platform you plan to use before purchasing or setting up a device.

MetaMask identifies several ways a wallet can be compromised or funds put at risk:

- Works seamlessly with Android, iOS and desktop: Connect wirelessly or via USB-C to your phone or computer. Manage your crypto anywhere with our companion Trezor Suite app.
- Phishing and impersonation: A fake website or message may try to trick you into entering your SRP or private key, or into signing a harmful request.
- Fake support: Impostors may claim they need your recovery credentials to fix a problem. MetaMask will not ask for your SRP, and its support guidance says it has no phone number. Go to the official MetaMask Help Center yourself and use its Contact Support option; do not trust unsolicited messages or search ads as a route to help.
- Malicious software or a fake extension: Malware may retrieve stored private information, while a counterfeit extension may expose credentials or redirect activity.
- Risky token approvals: An unlimited contract approval can grant a contract ongoing permission to spend tokens. Alerts cannot make an authorization safe if you choose to approve it.
MetaMask’s compromise and scam guidance describes these risks. A warning or hardware device may add useful friction, but neither replaces checking what a request authorizes.
What to do if you suspect a wallet compromise
MetaMask’s guidance is to move carefully: a compromised device or linked account could put a newly created wallet at risk too. The steps below reflect its published advice, not a guarantee that remaining funds can be recovered.
- Stop using the suspected wallet and assess the exposure. If the SRP may have been exposed, treat accounts derived from it as compromised. Do not enter the phrase into a site or share it with anyone offering help.
- Create a new wallet in a separate browser profile or on another device. If the old setup relied on a linked Google or Apple account that may itself be compromised, avoid using that account for the new wallet.
- Move remaining funds if it is safe and possible. MetaMask cautions against sending more gas funds if a sweeper script may be present, because it may immediately take incoming funds.
- Stop using accounts associated with the compromised SRP. Contact MetaMask through the official Help Center and report the scam using its current guidance.
On-chain transactions cannot be reversed by MetaMask, and MetaMask says it cannot restore missing funds. The exact next steps depend on what was exposed and whether any funds remain; do not treat a generic checklist as a recovery guarantee.
