How Materia Linking and Support Materia Work in Final Fantasy VII Remake

A practical guide to linked materia slots in Final Fantasy VII Remake, including compatible Support pairings, Elemental’s weapon and armor effects, and Magnify’s wider spell coverage.

In FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, a linked pair of equipment slots lets a compatible blue Support materia change how the materia in its partner slot works. Link Elemental to elemental magic to add an elemental effect to a weapon or gain elemental defense from armor; link Magnify to compatible magic to extend its reach to multiple applicable targets, with reduced effect while expanded. The slots must be connected, the materia must be compatible, and the result can depend on the Support materia’s level.

What linking materia means

Materia are equipped in slots on weapons and armor. They grant abilities such as magic and summons, and some can be combined to alter an effect. In a linked pair, one slot is connected to its partner; putting a compatible Support materia in one and the materia it supports in the other enables the combination. The connection is functional, not just a visual arrangement: two materia that happen to be equipped on the same character do not form a linked combination unless they occupy connected slots.

Support materia are identified by their blue color. Their role is to modify or extend another materia’s effect, rather than to provide the paired effect on their own. Compatibility matters: a blue Support materia does not necessarily work with every other materia. The precise pairing depends on the Support materia and the ability it is meant to affect.

Square Enix’s official explanation uses Elemental as an example: link Support Elemental with Lightning materia, and the equipment location determines whether the linked element is applied offensively or defensively. Magnify is another useful example because it changes the target coverage of compatible magic. These examples show the main idea: first make a valid linked pair, then consider what that pairing does in the current equipment slot.

It helps to separate three questions when evaluating a setup: Are the slots connected? Is the Support materia compatible with its partner? And is the pair placed on the weapon or armor that matches your goal? A pair can be correctly equipped but still produce a result that feels wrong if one of those choices does not fit the intended use. Materia slots also let you equip the underlying abilities themselves; linking adds the Support effect rather than replacing the partner materia’s basic role.

How to link materia

You can set up a pair from the game’s Materia & Equipment menu. Square Enix notes that the menu becomes available after reaching certain points in the story, so a new player may need to progress before being able to arrange equipment this way.

  1. Open Materia & Equipment. Select the character and the weapon or armor you want to configure. If you cannot access the menu yet, continue the story until it becomes available.
  2. Find a connected pair of slots. Look for two equipment slots joined by a visible connection. A materia in an unconnected slot will not receive a linked Support effect from another materia merely because both are equipped.
  3. Place Support materia and a compatible partner in the pair. Put the blue Support materia in one of the connected slots and the materia it supports in the other. Verify the pairing is compatible rather than assuming that any two materia will combine.
  4. Choose weapon or armor deliberately. For Elemental, using a weapon produces an offensive elemental effect, while using armor provides elemental defense. The same pair therefore serves different purposes depending on the equipment location.
  5. Consider levels and the intended target. Support effects can change with the Support materia’s level. With Magnify, decide whether wider coverage is worth the reduction in effect while the spell is expanded.

If a pairing does not produce the expected result, check the slot connection first, then confirm the materia are compatible and review whether the right equipment location is being used. A valid combination can still have a different outcome from the one you intended if you placed it in armor instead of a weapon, or vice versa.

When rearranging a setup, keep the function of each materia in mind. The compatible magic or other partner remains the materia whose effect is being modified; the blue Support materia supplies the added behavior. The linked pair must be on equipment with connected slots, so having both materia equipped somewhere on the character is not a substitute for the connection. If the menu shows the expected equipment but the result differs, recheck the pair and its position before changing the rest of the build.

Elemental: offense in a weapon, defense in armor

Elemental links with an elemental magic materia. On a weapon, the linked element is added to attacks; on armor, the linked element provides defense. This distinction is the most important decision when equipping Elemental: the linked materia may be the same, but the equipment slot changes the practical role of the setup.

Where you equip the linked pair What Elemental does When to consider it
Weapon Adds the linked element to attacks. When you want attacks to carry an elemental property.
Armor Provides defense against the linked element. When you want protection associated with that element.

The effect is level-sensitive. The Final Fantasy VII Remake materia guide on GameFAQs describes Elemental’s weapon damage and armor protection as increasing across its levels, with immunity and absorption appearing at higher levels. Those higher-level results should not be assumed for a lower-level Elemental materia. The guide’s progression is specific to Remake; it is not a reason to generalize these mechanics to the original Final Fantasy VII or to FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH.

For a particular fight, the elemental match-up matters too. A weapon setup is useful only if adding that element suits the situation; an armor setup is a defensive choice. The available information establishes the broad weapon-versus-armor distinction, but does not support a universal recommendation for a specific enemy. Decide based on the battle and the effect you want rather than treating Elemental as a fixed damage upgrade.

Think of the weapon and armor versions as separate choices rather than interchangeable bonuses. If your priority is adding an elemental property to attacks, place the pair on a weapon. If your priority is defense against that element, put it on armor. Then consider Elemental’s current level: the GameFAQs guide describes stronger results at higher levels, including immunity and absorption at the top end, so do not assume those outcomes simply because the materia is linked. The partner element matters as well; the official example uses Lightning, but the setup principle is to pair Elemental with an elemental magic materia.

Magnify: reach more targets, not more power

Magnify links to compatible magic and broadens the spell’s target coverage to multiple applicable targets. That can make a healing spell useful across the party, or let attack magic cover a wider group. It is a targeting change, not a universal damage bonus: the GameFAQs materia and Support materia guides report that expanded magic has reduced effect while it is spread across targets.

The reduction is level-sensitive as well. According to the GameFAQs guide, the penalty decreases as Magnify gains levels. In practical terms, compare the value of reaching more targets with the cost of the reduced effect in the expanded use. A group heal may be valuable because it reaches more allies at once; attack magic may be valuable for coverage, but spreading its effect is not the same as concentrating it on one target.

  • For healing: link Magnify with compatible healing magic when reaching several applicable allies matters. Account for the fact that expanded magic has reduced effect.
  • For attacks: use a compatible attack spell when covering multiple applicable targets is more useful than focusing its full effect on a narrower target set.
  • For either role: check Magnify’s level and the valid targets for the spell. The benefit is broader coverage, not an unconditional improvement to every spell in every situation.

The guides describe Magnify as working with compatible magic, not with every materia. If the combination is not doing what you expect, check that the materia occupy a linked pair and that the other materia is one Magnify supports. The exact number and type of valid targets depend on the spell and situation; the available guidance does not establish one universal target count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When deciding whether to use Magnify, weigh coverage against the effect reduction rather than looking only at how many targets a spell can reach. For healing, reaching multiple applicable allies can be the priority even though the expanded spell is less potent. For attack magic, broader coverage may be useful when several targets need to be affected, while a focused cast may better suit a single target. The best choice depends on the spell and situation; Magnify does not turn every compatible cast into a stronger one.

Choosing between Elemental and Magnify setups

These two Support materia answer different questions. Elemental changes the elemental relationship of a weapon or armor setup; Magnify changes how widely compatible magic can reach. Neither is simply a general-purpose upgrade. Pick according to whether your priority is an elemental effect tied to equipment or broader spell coverage.

Decision Elemental Magnify
What changes? Elemental attacks from a weapon, or elemental defense from armor. Target coverage for compatible magic.
What to check first? Whether the pair is in a weapon or armor, and Elemental’s level. Whether the spell is compatible, which targets are applicable, and Magnify’s level.
Main trade-off The outcome differs between offense and defense; its strength depends on level. Expanded magic reaches more targets but has reduced effect while expanded.

Use the tables as a setup decision, not as a ranking. A weapon Elemental pairing and an armor Elemental pairing solve different problems, while Magnify’s usefulness depends on how much you value wider coverage relative to its reduced expanded effect. The source material does not establish a best setup for every character or battle.

A quick comparison is to ask what you want the materia to change. Choose Elemental when you want an equipment-linked elemental offense or defense effect, and choose Magnify when you want compatible magic to reach more applicable targets. Then account for the relevant level and trade-off: Elemental’s strength varies by level, while Magnify spreads a reduced effect across its expanded targeting. These mechanics provide decision points, not a single best pairing for all encounters.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Putting both materia in separate, unconnected slots: Move them into a visibly linked pair. Being equipped at the same time is not enough to activate a Support effect.
  • Assuming every Support materia works with every partner: Check compatibility for the particular blue materia. Pairing rules are specific, not universal.
  • Expecting Elemental to do the same thing on every piece of gear: Check whether the pair is in a weapon or armor. Weapon means elemental offense; armor means elemental defense.
  • Expecting Magnify to increase a spell’s power: Its function is to expand target coverage, and the expanded effect is reduced. Consider the coverage benefit against that reduction.
  • Ignoring level: Elemental and Magnify effects change with their levels according to the GameFAQs guides. Do not treat a high-level result as guaranteed at a lower level.
  • Looking for the menu too early: The Materia & Equipment menu is not available immediately; Square Enix says it unlocks after certain story progress.

Another common mistake is to treat a linked Support effect as an automatic property of the character. It comes from the combination in the connected equipment slots, so changing equipment or moving either materia can change whether the pairing is active. Revisit the setup after a gear change, especially if you were relying on Elemental for offense or defense or Magnify for group coverage.

Scope and edition note

This explanation covers FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE. The rules described here should not be silently applied to the original Final Fantasy VII or FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, whose systems are outside this guide’s scope. Square Enix’s edition information also indicates that edition contents vary; it does not establish one platform-wide set of contents or current retailer availability. Edition differences do not change the scope of the mechanics explained here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I link materia in FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE?

Open the Materia & Equipment menu, find two connected equipment slots, and put a compatible Support materia and its partner in that linked pair. Simply equipping both materia on the same character in unconnected slots will not activate the Support effect.

What does Support materia do?

A compatible blue Support materia modifies or extends the effect of the materia in its linked partner slot. The result depends on the Support materia and the compatible partner; not every blue materia works with every other materia.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Elemental work on both weapons and armor?

Yes. Linked to elemental magic in a weapon, Elemental adds the element to attacks. In armor, it provides defense against the linked element. Its effect also depends on Elemental’s level.

What does Magnify do, and does it make magic stronger?

Magnify expands compatible magic to multiple applicable targets. Expanded magic has reduced effect, and the GameFAQs guide says that reduction decreases as Magnify gains levels. It broadens coverage rather than providing a universal power increase.

Why is my Support materia combination not working?

Check that the materia occupy connected slots and that the Support materia is compatible with its partner. For Elemental, also check whether you placed the pair on a weapon or armor, since that determines whether it is offensive or defensive.

When can I access the Materia & Equipment menu?

Not immediately at the start: Square Enix says the menu becomes available after certain points in the story. Continue progressing if it is not yet accessible.

The Bottom Line

In FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, a Support materia works through a compatible partner in a connected equipment-slot pair. Elemental adds an elemental effect to a weapon or gives armor elemental defense; Magnify broadens compatible magic’s target coverage while reducing its expanded effect. Check the slot connection, compatibility, equipment location, and Support materia level before judging a setup.
