How Marvel Zombies Fits Into the MCU Multiverse Saga

Marvel Zombies continues the zombie reality introduced in What If...?, placing it in the MCU’s multiverse storytelling without a confirmed numbered phase or in-universe year.

Marvel Zombies is an animated offshoot of What If…? that follows an alternate MCU reality—not a confirmed event in the main MCU timeline. That makes it part of the Multiverse Saga’s broader storytelling context, but Marvel and Disney’s official descriptions do not assign it to a numbered phase or give it a specific in-universe year.

Where Marvel Zombies fits in the MCU

The clearest way to place Marvel Zombies is by its connection to What If…?, rather than by trying to slot it between live-action MCU films. Marvel describes What If…? as an animated series that reimagines events from the MCU films and explores multiverse possibilities. Marvel’s 2022 account of its animation panel says the zombie story in the first season of What If…? led to Marvel Zombies. Disney later described the four-part event series as expanding the dystopian world first seen in What If…?. Marvel’s What If…? overview, Marvel’s 2022 animation-panel report, and Disney’s behind-the-scenes article establish that lineage.

That relationship makes the series part of the MCU’s multiverse storytelling: it takes a premise introduced through an alternate version of MCU events and develops that reality further. It does not, on the available official descriptions, make the zombie outbreak a chapter of the central live-action continuity. The distinction matters because “MCU-related” can refer either to the franchise’s shared storytelling framework or to events that happened in its primary timeline. Marvel Zombies fits the first description; its official framing points to an alternate reality.

Is Marvel Zombies part of the Multiverse Saga?

In the broad sense, yes. Marvel has called MCU Phases 4, 5, and 6 “The Multiverse Saga,” and What If…? is explicitly presented as a series about multiverse possibilities. Since Marvel Zombies grows out of that series and expands one of its alternate realities, it belongs naturally to the Multiverse Saga’s multiverse-focused storytelling. Marvel’s 2022 D23 report supplies the saga label; it is an account of announcements, not a detailed continuity guide. Read Marvel’s D23 report.

There is an important qualification: the saga label does not prove that every project involving the multiverse has been formally placed in one of its numbered phases. The official materials identified here do not call Marvel Zombies a Phase 4, Phase 5, or Phase 6 installment. It is more precise to call it an animated What If…? offshoot within the Multiverse Saga’s broader context than to claim a specific phase assignment.

Question What the official descriptions establish
What is the series connected to? The zombie story in Season 1 of What If…?; Disney says the series expands that dystopian world. Marvel; Disney.
Is it a multiverse story? Yes: its What If…? origin and alternate-reality premise place it in the MCU’s multiverse storytelling.
Which numbered phase is it in? Not stated in the official descriptions cited here.
What year does it happen in-universe? Not stated in the official descriptions cited here.
Is it a main-timeline event? The official framing describes an expansion of the dystopian What If…? world, not an event in the central live-action timeline.

How the What If…? connection works

What If…? starts from familiar MCU film events and imagines alternatives. Marvel’s description emphasizes that it reimagines those events and opens up multiverse possibilities. That structure gives an animated series room to follow consequences that do not need to become part of the main timeline. Marvel Zombies uses that opening: it takes the zombie scenario introduced in the first season and expands the resulting dystopian world into its own four-part event series.

This is a direct narrative lineage, not merely a shared genre or a thematic resemblance. Marvel’s animation-panel report says the zombie story spawned the series, while Disney’s description explicitly calls it an expansion of the world first seen in What If…?. Those statements support describing the shows as connected. They do not, by themselves, establish every story detail, a complete viewing order, or how the series might affect other MCU projects.

The distinction between a story’s origin and its exact continuity placement is useful here. The origin is clear: the animated What If…? zombie scenario. The broader context is also clear: the MCU’s exploration of alternate realities. But the sources do not specify an in-universe calendar date or a precise phase number for the new series. A viewer can understand the connection without treating an unstated date or phase as settled canon.

What the premise and format tell viewers

Disney+ describes Marvel Zombies as a 2025 series about survivors confronting a zombie plague after the Avengers are overtaken. Disney’s behind-the-scenes article identifies Bryan Andrews as the director, writer, and executive producer, and describes the project as a four-part event series. These details establish the format and broad premise; they do not supply a specific placement in the MCU’s in-universe chronology. See the Disney+ listing and Disney’s series feature.

The four-part structure is another reason not to assume that the series should be read as a regular installment in a film-by-film timeline. Disney presents it as an event series that expands one alternate world. That makes the most useful expectation a focused continuation of the premise, rather than a claim that it serves as a required bridge between particular live-action releases. The official material cited here does not identify such a bridge.

The horror approach is also part of the project’s stated identity. In Marvel’s report on the 2022 animation panel, executive producer Brad Winderbaum said the team was “not shying away from the things that made the comic book great,” referring to its horror approach. That comment indicates an intention to take the premise’s horror seriously. It should not be stretched into a claim about a particular rating, level of graphic content, or the series’ suitability for a specific age group; those are separate questions that this statement does not answer. Why the Earth-2149 comics reference does not place the series

Marvel also has a page for Marvel Zombies (Earth-2149). That page concerns the comics reference and is not evidence that the animated series takes place on Earth-2149. Similar names do not establish that the comics’ numbered reality and the series’ alternate MCU reality are identical. Marvel’s Earth-2149 page is useful for identifying the comics designation, but it should not be used as proof of the animated series’ universe number.

This is a common continuity trap: a familiar franchise name can connect adaptations without making their continuities interchangeable. The supported connection for the series is to the zombie scenario in What If…?. Unless an official source explicitly identifies the animated story with the comics’ Earth-2149, assigning it that label goes beyond what the cited material establishes.

How to place it in a watch order

For viewers who want the narrative context, the most grounded approach is to watch the first-season zombie story in What If…? before Marvel Zombies. Marvel identifies that story as the series’ origin, and Disney describes the new series as an expansion of the world it introduced. That order follows the stated creative and narrative connection without pretending that the official descriptions provide a complete chronological sequence.

  1. Start with the relevant What If…? zombie story. It is the premise from which Marvel Zombies grew, according to Marvel’s animation-panel report.
  2. Continue with Marvel Zombies. Disney describes the four-part series as expanding that dystopian world.
  3. Treat the story as an alternate-reality branch. Do not insert it as a confirmed main-timeline event or assign it a calendar year that the official descriptions do not provide.

This is a context-first order, not a claim that the two series exhaust every multiverse connection or that viewers must watch one to follow all other MCU stories. The sources establish the direct relationship between these particular stories; they do not define a mandatory franchise-wide viewing order.

What is confirmed—and what remains open

The official material supports a clear, limited set of conclusions. Marvel’s saga framing places Phases 4, 5, and 6 under the Multiverse Saga name. Marvel describes What If…? as an exploration of alternate possibilities based on MCU film events. Marvel says the first-season zombie story spawned Marvel Zombies, and Disney calls the four-part series an expansion of that dystopian world. Disney+ lists the series as a 2025 title and describes its survivor-versus-plague premise.

Those points establish the series’ franchise context and connection, but they leave some continuity specifics unanswered. The official descriptions cited here do not state a numbered phase assignment, an in-universe year, or an Earth designation for the animated series. Nor do they say that the events are part of the central live-action timeline. A firm answer on those points would require an explicit official statement; without one, the careful answer is that they are unstated.

Accordingly, the most accurate shorthand is: Marvel Zombies is a four-part animated What If…? offshoot that expands an alternate MCU reality and fits the Multiverse Saga broadly, without an officially specified phase or in-universe date in the cited descriptions.
