An official list-search tool can help establish whether a vessel or party matches a designation; commercial services may add vessel histories, ownership relationships and behavioral indicators. Neither a match nor a clean search result, by itself, establishes whether a transaction is lawful or a vessel is safe. Compare tools by identity resolution, relevant sanctions coverage, ownership depth, data provenance and the evidence they preserve for human review.
What a maritime sanctions screening tool should—and should not—tell you
A vessel check is not just a name search. Vessel names, flags and ownership can change, and similar names can create ambiguous matches. The IMO number is a useful persistent identifier: the UK Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) says it is intended to remain permanent despite changes in vessel name or ownership. A robust review therefore considers the IMO number alongside names, aliases, flag and vessel history.

Ownership checks also extend beyond the registered owner. Depending on the transaction and available information, screen the registered owner, beneficial owner or ownership chain, operator, manager and relevant counterparties. A tool may surface links among those parties, but the analyst still has to assess whether the relationship is current, reliable and relevant to the transaction.

The UK Sanctions List search-tool user guide says: “Reliance on, or use of, the search tool or its results does not limit any criminal or civil liability or reduce the obligation to undertake due diligence.” The guide was updated 21 September 2026. OFAC’s October 2024 maritime compliance communiqué likewise emphasizes ownership and management complexity and the consideration of appropriate sanctions clauses in relevant contracts; it does not establish that any software platform is sufficient.

How the available options compare
The options below are not equivalent categories. Official tools search authoritative designations within their remit. Commercial services describe broader maritime data and screening features, but the product descriptions surfaced here are vendor claims, not independently tested results. No verified pricing, comparative performance benchmark or hands-on evaluation is established for these options.

| UK Sanctions List search tool | Searches individuals, entities and ships; supports exact, partial and fuzzy matching across multiple fields, including names and identification numbers. The UK guide was updated 21 September 2026. | It is a list-search tool, not a complete ownership, vessel-history or behavioral-risk service. The guide does not establish commercial-service-style ownership-chain or AIS analysis. | Check for relevant UK designations and investigate any plausible match. Do not treat a negative result as a substitute for broader due diligence. |
| KYCK | Its vessel-screening page describes checks using vessel identity and IMO number, sanctions-list screening, registered and beneficial owners, ISM managers, flag and name history, insurance as a signal, and counterparties. | Current list coverage, underlying sources, refresh cadence, geographic availability, price, audit evidence and independent accuracy are not established here. | Ask for a demonstration of how each relationship and history item is sourced, dated and linked to the vessel. |
| Verihelm / Dryad Global | Its sanctions-screening page describes multi-list screening across OFAC, EU and UK lists within a maritime intelligence platform. | Specific vessel-identity fields, ownership-chain depth, update cadence, current availability, price and independent performance are not established here. | Determine whether the service exposes the source and date for each list result and whether it also supports the ownership checks your transaction requires. |
| True Fathom | Its product page describes screening major sanctions regimes and a vessel’s registered owner and operator, with a beneficial-ownership-chain capability. | The exact regimes and sources, chain depth and recency, refresh cadence, service availability, price, audit evidence and independent performance are not established here. | Verify which ownership links are direct, inferred or supplied by a third party, and how uncertain or incomplete chains are represented. |
| Other official lists and government guidance | Use the authoritative list or source for each relevant jurisdiction. OFAC’s October 2024 communiqué provides maritime compliance guidance and examples, rather than a comparative assessment of screening software. | This information does not establish a single cross-jurisdictional search experience or a commercial platform’s coverage. | Identify the jurisdictions that apply to the parties, vessel, transaction and relevant activity; confirm the current official source for each. |
OFSI states that the UK Sanctions List became the only source for UK sanctions designations after the OFSI Consolidated List closed on 28 January 2026. Confirm the current UK list source and search workflow when carrying out a review, because list infrastructure and policy can change.

What to compare before choosing a service
Vessel identity resolution
- Can the service search by IMO number as well as current name? Does it display former names, aliases and flag history?
- How does it handle an absent, changed or conflicting identifier? Ask to see how it separates a likely match from a possible match and what evidence supports the distinction.
- Does a result show the identity fields that matched, rather than only a risk label? A name-only hit may be ambiguous; a changed name does not necessarily mean a different vessel.
Sanctions coverage and freshness
- Ask which jurisdictions and lists are searched, whether the list is official or derived, and how the service identifies the source and date of a result.
- Establish the update cadence for each list and what the interface shows if a feed is stale, unavailable or only partly searched. A general claim such as “multi-list” does not answer which lists were included in a particular check.
- For an official search tool, distinguish its matching functions from the legal scope of the list. The UK tool offers exact, partial and fuzzy matches across multiple fields; a fuzzy result is a lead for analyst review, not a finding of identity.
Ownership and related-party depth
- Check whether a service covers the registered owner, beneficial owners, operator, manager and related entities, and whether it can show the chain connecting them to the vessel.
- Ask how deep the chain goes, when each relationship was last verified, and whether the source is a filing, supplied document, third-party dataset or inference.
- Find out how it represents unknown, opaque or conflicting ownership. A blank field must not be mistaken for evidence that no beneficial owner or risk exists.
History and behavioral indicators
- Check whether the product shows changes in vessel name, flag, owner or manager, and whether it dates those changes.
- Ask what AIS gaps, disablement, manipulation or spoofing indicators it provides, what period they cover and what underlying data can be inspected.
- Find out whether port calls or other behavior are shown as observations with context or compressed into an unexplained risk score. These indicators call for investigation; they do not by themselves establish sanctions liability or misconduct.
Evidence, workflow and independent validation
- A useful record should let a reviewer recover the query, date, identifiers checked, relevant source and date, match rationale, analyst decision and any follow-up. Confirm what can be retained and exported.
- Ask how alerts are assigned, reviewed, resolved and reopened when ownership or list data changes. Check whether the platform preserves the analyst’s rationale, not just the final status.
- Verify integration needs, user access and service availability for your location and transaction workflow. Request references or independent validation where possible; vendor descriptions alone do not demonstrate match accuracy or completeness.
These evidence checks are practical due-diligence controls, not a software-feature checklist prescribed by OFSI or the UK search-tool guide. Their purpose is to let the organization explain what was searched, what was found and why it proceeded, paused or escalated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to screen a vessel and its ownership
- Define the scope. Identify the transaction, relevant parties and jurisdictions before searching. Determine which sanctions regimes apply to the organization and activity, and consult the current authoritative sources for those regimes.
- Assemble identifying information. Collect the vessel’s IMO number, current and former names, flag and available vessel records. Gather identifying details for the registered owner, beneficial owners where identifiable, operator, manager and counterparties. OFSI recommends collecting and maintaining beneficial-owner information and verifying ownership information against supplied documents.
- Search vessel identity and relevant lists. Use the IMO number and multiple name or identification fields where the search supports them. Review exact, partial and fuzzy matches rather than treating every result as equivalent. Record the fields searched and the source and date of each result.
- Trace ownership and management. Compare the registered owner with the available beneficial-owner chain, operator and manager. Investigate opaque or changing ownership and management structures, new vessel acquisitions, and relationships that cannot be reconciled with supplied documents.
- Review history and behavioral signals. Examine name, flag, owner and manager changes, port information and any AIS anomalies available to you. Check dates and context; a gap or unusual signal is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of deliberate evasion.
- Resolve uncertainty and document the decision. Seek corroborating records or escalate for enhanced review when the identity or ownership remains uncertain. Preserve the query, sources, dates, matched fields, analyst notes and disposition in the organization’s records.
- Reassess when circumstances change. Refresh checks when relevant facts change, such as a new ownership or management relationship, a vessel identity change or a new designation. Set monitoring and review intervals appropriate to the transaction’s risk; the guidance cited here does not prescribe one universal interval.
When a result needs enhanced due diligence
OFSI’s maritime shipping guidance, updated 28 January 2026, recommends a risk-based approach. It identifies opaque or changing ownership and management structures, new vessel acquisitions, AIS disablement or manipulation, spoofing, physical alteration of vessel identification and open registries as relevant risks. Those are prompts to understand the circumstances and verify the parties—not automatic conclusions that a vessel or transaction violates sanctions.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
OFSI also notes that legitimate AIS disablement or poor transmission can occur. Consider the timing, duration, available operational explanation and other evidence; do not turn a single data anomaly into a determination. Similarly, physical alteration of a name or IMO number warrants careful identity verification, but the analyst should establish what happened and whether records refer to the same vessel.
If the real parties of interest cannot reasonably be identified, OFSI advises considering enhanced due diligence. Depending on the case, that may mean obtaining and verifying further ownership documents, corroborating relationships through other reliable sources, clarifying the role of an operator or manager, or escalating the decision under the organization’s sanctions procedures. The depth of review should reflect the transaction and its risk.

How to assess whether a provider fits your workflow
Do not choose a service from a feature list alone. Give each provider the same representative scenarios and ask it to show the underlying evidence, not just the alert screen. Useful scenarios include a vessel with a former name, an ambiguous name match, an ownership chain with missing links, and an AIS anomaly with a plausible operational explanation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For a vessel-first workflow: prioritize IMO-based identity resolution, former names and flag history, and clear handling of conflicts among identifiers.
- For an ownership-first workflow: prioritize beneficial-owner depth, dated relationship provenance and visibility into registered owners, operators, managers and related companies.
- For cross-border work: require a precise list-by-list account of jurisdiction coverage and freshness. Do not infer that one vendor’s “major regimes” claim covers every jurisdiction relevant to your activity.
- For audit-sensitive work: verify that the record can preserve the source, date, query fields, match rationale, analyst review and final disposition in a form your organization can retrieve.
Pricing, regional availability, active service terms and independent performance figures were not established for the named commercial services above. Obtain current written answers directly from each provider and validate important capabilities independently where feasible. Avoid treating a provider’s advertised match as a legal determination—or the absence of an alert as proof that a vessel or counterparty is safe.

- Can a user search and resolve a vessel by IMO number, aliases, former names and flag history? How are conflicting identifiers presented?
- Which ownership roles are included, how deep can beneficial-ownership chains be traced, and how are missing or uncertain links labeled?
- What is the source and date for each owner, operator, manager and vessel-history relationship? Are direct records distinguished from inferred links?
- Which AIS or other behavioral indicators are available, what underlying observations can an analyst inspect, and how does the service communicate uncertainty?
- Can the platform export a review record containing query details, matched fields, source provenance, dates, analyst notes and disposition?
- What are the current service availability, geographic limitations, integration requirements, update cadence and pricing for the exact package being considered?
- What independent evidence is available about data quality and match performance, and what limitations or known gaps should users account for?
