There is no single maritime danger-pay rate for every vessel or crew. Under the 2024–2025 IBF/ITF-IMEC agreement, the Warlike Operations Area bonus is 100% of daily basic wage for the vessel’s stay, subject to a minimum of five days’ pay. ITF guidance describes different duration rules for High-Risk and Extended Risk Areas. Your vessel’s applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the area designation and the dates of exposure determine which rule applies.
How is maritime danger pay calculated?
For a Warlike Operations Area, the cited 2024–2025 IBF/ITF-IMEC CBA sets the bonus at 100% of daily basic wage for the duration of the ship’s stay, with a minimum payment of five days’ pay. In simplified form:

Bonus = daily basic wage × eligible days, with at least five days’ pay for a Warlike Operations Area stay.

The rate applies to basic wage, not automatically to total compensation. Do not add overtime, allowances or other pay components unless the applicable agreement or contract says to include them. The CBA and contract determine what counts as basic wage and how payroll handles the calculation.

In practical terms, “100% of daily basic wage” means the bonus is calculated at an amount equal to one daily basic-wage figure for each eligible day. It does not mean that every component of a seafarer’s compensation is doubled. If the agreement’s daily basic-wage amount is $100, the cited Warlike Operations rate is $100 of bonus for each eligible day, subject to the minimum. The precise wage figure must come from the contract or agreement that covers the crew member.
Illustration of the five-day minimum
Suppose a crew member’s applicable daily basic wage is $100 and the vessel’s eligible stay in a Warlike Operations Area is three days. Under the cited rule, the minimum is five days’ pay: $100 × 5 = $500. For an eligible eight-day stay at the same assumed daily basic wage, the calculation would be $100 × 8 = $800. These are illustrations, not promised payments: the actual wage figure, covered dates and applicable agreement must be verified.
The five-day minimum is stated for the Warlike Operations rule. The ITF summary does not state that the same minimum applies to High-Risk Areas, so do not carry it over to that category without checking the relevant agreement.

How the three area categories differ
ITF guidance describes Warlike Operations and High-Risk Areas as places where seafarers face serious and immediate threats to life, safety or security, including threats arising from war, military tensions, hostilities or piracy. The categories are not interchangeable payroll labels: the designation and the agreement’s terms affect the trigger and eligible period.

| Area category | Pay basis or rate in the cited guidance | Eligible period or trigger | Minimum stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warlike Operations Area | 100% of daily basic wage under the 2024–2025 IBF/ITF-IMEC CBA | Duration of the ship’s stay | Five days’ pay |
| High-Risk Area | The ITF summary describes a bonus but does not state a universal percentage | Actual duration of stay or transit | The ITF summary does not state a five-day minimum |
| Extended Risk Area | The ITF summary describes a bonus but does not state a universal percentage | Only the day the vessel is attacked | The ITF summary does not state a minimum period |
The main comparison is not simply which label sounds more serious. Look at the designation, the payment basis and the event or time that makes the bonus payable. Warlike Operations has a stated rate and minimum in the cited CBA. The ITF summary describes High-Risk Area payment by actual stay or transit, while the Extended Risk Area trigger is the day the vessel is attacked. The summary does not give a universal percentage for those latter categories, so an estimate needs the specific applicable agreement.
The IBF CBA says High-Risk Area benefits may be determined case by case. That means the category alone does not establish a universal rate or full payroll formula. Check the vessel’s agreement and any relevant annex for the benefit that applies.
What determines whether a crew member qualifies?
Eligibility depends on more than a ship’s proximity to a dangerous region. The applicable CBA and the relevant designation govern; do not assume that every vessel, flag, contract or seafarer receives the same benefit. Area designations can change, and a particular agreement may define the covered area, qualifying period and payment treatment.
- The applicable agreement: Identify the CBA covering the vessel and crew, including its effective dates and any area-specific annex or amendment. The calculation cited above comes from the 2024–2025 IBF/ITF-IMEC CBA, Article 17; it should not be treated as a universal maritime rule or assumed to apply unchanged to a later agreement.
- The area designation: Confirm whether the relevant location is designated Warlike Operations, High-Risk or Extended Risk under the agreement and the current area list. Similar-sounding labels can carry different payment triggers.
- The covered dates and activity: Establish the vessel’s stay, transit or attack date as applicable to the designated category. Do not count dates by applying a different category’s trigger.
- The wage basis: Find the daily basic-wage amount used by the agreement or contract. The cited rule does not establish a universal definition of basic wage, rounding method or payroll procedure.
ITF seafarer guidance says covered crews should be informed when a vessel is bound for or may enter designated areas, and that designations should be attached to the CBA and accessible onboard. Ask for the applicable documents rather than relying only on a general map or a past voyage’s pay treatment.

That information matters before a voyage as well as when checking a payslip. A crew member should be able to identify which agreement applies and where the agreement records the relevant area designations and benefits. If a vessel may enter a designated area, the notice and onboard documents can help the crew understand which category is involved and which qualifying period to record. They also provide a common reference for the crew, employer and payroll staff when a payment is reviewed.
How to estimate your own bonus
- Get the vessel’s CBA and contract. Confirm which agreement covers you, its applicable dates, and any attached area list or benefit annex. If a term is unclear, ask the appropriate onboard representative, union or employer to identify the governing provision.
- Verify the current area category. Check the designation for the location and voyage dates against the applicable agreement and current ITF/IBF information. Do not infer a designation from the name of a sea, strait or country alone.
- Record the qualifying period or event. For Warlike Operations, establish the ship’s stay; for High-Risk, establish the actual stay or transit; for Extended Risk, establish whether and when the vessel was attacked. Use the rule tied to the category actually designated.
- Identify the daily basic-wage figure. Use the amount defined for your contract, not your total take-home pay or an assumed daily equivalent. Confirm how the agreement treats the wage base and any payroll details it does not expressly settle.
- Apply only the stated rule. For the cited Warlike Operations term, multiply daily basic wage by eligible days and ensure the payable period is at least five days. For the other categories, use the applicable CBA’s rate and terms; the ITF summary alone does not supply a universal rate.
- Compare the estimate with the payslip. If the paid amount differs, ask payroll to identify the category, eligible dates, wage basis and provision used. Preserve the CBA or annex and voyage records so the question can be checked against the same terms.
For High-Risk or Extended Risk terms, do not substitute the Warlike Operations formula just because a daily-wage calculation is convenient. First find the rate and payment terms the CBA actually sets. The ITF summary identifies the relevant duration or event trigger, but it does not supply a single percentage that can be used for every contract in those categories.
What to check if the payslip differs from your estimate
Start by comparing like with like. Confirm that the payslip uses the same area category and dates that you used, and ask which provision in the CBA or annex was applied. Then verify whether the wage amount is the agreement’s daily basic wage rather than total pay, and whether the calculation counts the qualifying stay, transit or attack-day trigger. For the cited Warlike Operations rule, check that the five-day minimum has been considered where the stay was shorter than five days.

Why current lists and agreement dates matter
Risk-area designations are time-sensitive. The ITF Seafarers resource index reported that its ITF and IBF area lists were updated on 8 October 2026. Check the live lists and onboard agreement for a current voyage; a designation reported earlier may no longer describe the applicable boundaries or terms.
A joint ITF–JNG statement dated 5 March 2026 described the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman designation at that time. That statement is a dated account of a particular designation, not a complete or necessarily current boundary list. Use the current applicable list and CBA rather than treating the statement as a standing map.
The relevant sources are ITF Seafarers’ “ITF Warlike and high risk areas,” the 2024–2025 “ITF IMEC International IBF CBA” (Article 17), and ITF Seafarers’ “Resources: ITF Warlike and High Risk Areas.” Their rules explain the cited framework; they do not establish one entitlement for all maritime employment.

Is maritime danger pay based on basic wage or total salary?
The cited 2024–2025 IBF/ITF-IMEC CBA sets the Warlike Operations Area bonus at 100% of daily basic wage. It does not say to calculate the bonus from total compensation automatically. Check your agreement and contract for the definition of basic wage and any payroll treatment.
Best Value
How much is the Warlike Operations bonus for a short stay?
Under the cited CBA, the bonus is 100% of daily basic wage for the ship’s stay, subject to a minimum of five days’ pay. For example, a three-day eligible stay still reaches the five-day minimum. Verify that the agreement applies to your vessel and crew.
Does the five-day minimum apply to every high-risk zone?
No universal five-day minimum is established for every category in the cited guidance. The five-day minimum is stated for the Warlike Operations rule. ITF describes High-Risk Area payment for the actual stay or transit and Extended Risk Area payment for the day of an attack; check the applicable CBA for the rate and other terms.
How do I know which danger-pay category applies to my voyage?
Check the current ITF/IBF area information together with the area list or annex attached to the vessel’s applicable CBA. ITF guidance says covered crews should be informed when a vessel is bound for or may enter a designated area, and the designations should be accessible onboard.

Ask payroll to identify the area category, eligible dates, wage basis and CBA provision used. Compare those details with the applicable agreement and voyage records. The sources do not set a universal rounding or payroll procedure, so request the contract-specific explanation rather than assuming one.
The Bottom Line
For the cited 2024–2025 IBF/ITF-IMEC CBA, Warlike Operations pay is 100% of daily basic wage for the vessel’s stay, subject to a five-day minimum. High-Risk and Extended Risk Areas have different triggers, and the cited ITF summary does not establish a universal rate for them. Check the applicable CBA, current area designation, wage figure and qualifying dates before estimating your own entitlement.
