Amazon announced on June 30, 2025, that it had deployed its one-millionth robot, and its CEO has said more than one million robots operate in fulfillment centers. The company’s figures describe different things—deployment milestones, operating robots and, later, robots manufactured—so they should not be treated as a single audited count of active warehouse robots. Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report separately reported more than 1.5 million full- and part-time employees worldwide.
How many robots does Amazon have?
Amazon announced on June 30, 2025, that it had deployed its one-millionth robot at a fulfillment center in Japan, with its robotics network spanning more than 300 facilities. The company’s announcement describes a deployment milestone; it does not define a continuously updated count of “active warehouse robots.” Amazon’s announcement also characterized the company as the world’s largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robotics. That is Amazon’s own characterization, not an independently verified industry ranking.

In an excerpt from his annual letter to shareholders, CEO Andy Jassy said that over one million robots were operating in fulfillment centers and helping with stowing, picking, sorting and transport within facilities. This is an operating figure, but it is still a company-reported figure rather than an independent fleet audit. The annual-letter excerpt gives the operational context.

Amazon reported a different metric in a September 24, 2026, announcement: it said it had manufactured more than one million robots in the United States and deployed them across more than 300 facilities globally. It also said robots assist with 75% of customer orders delivered worldwide. “Assist” does not mean a robot independently completes or delivers those orders; the company’s statement concerns orders that receive some assistance from its robotics network. Amazon’s 2026 announcement is the source for those claims.

| Metric | What Amazon reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| One-millionth robot deployed | Announced June 30, 2025; the milestone unit was delivered to a fulfillment center in Japan, and the network spanned more than 300 facilities. | A dated deployment milestone, not a published count of active robots on any later date. |
| Robots operating in fulfillment centers | Andy Jassy’s annual-letter excerpt said over one million were operating and helping with fulfillment-center tasks. | An operating figure attributed to Amazon; the excerpt does not define “active” as a formal fleet measure. |
| Robots manufactured in the U.S. | Amazon said in September 2026 that it had manufactured more than one million in the U.S. and deployed them across more than 300 facilities globally. | A manufacturing total and deployment scope; neither is interchangeable with the 2025 milestone or operating figure. |
These figures establish the scale Amazon reports for its robotics operations, but they do not support a precise, independently audited total of active warehouse robots. The dates and wording matter: a robot manufactured, deployed, or operating is not necessarily the same unit counted under every metric.
What do Amazon warehouse robots do?
Amazon describes robots as part of an internal logistics network: they move inventory and support employees as goods pass through fulfillment centers. The systems do not replace the whole fulfillment process. People and machines work in a facility workflow, with robots handling particular transport, sorting, picking or stowing tasks.

Move inventory through the facility
Amazon’s Hercules and Titan are drive units used to move inventory within facilities. Sequoia is described as a system for consolidating and moving inventory. These systems help bring goods to or between work areas rather than acting as standalone fulfillment operations. Amazon’s descriptions of the systems and their intended roles appear in its overview of robotics innovations.

Help with picking and stowing
Amazon says Vulcan combines sight and touch to help with picking and stowing. The company presents this as a way for a robotic system to interact with items during those tasks. That description identifies the intended capability; it is not an independent assessment of accuracy or performance across every product or facility.

Coordinate robot traffic
DeepFleet is Amazon’s AI model for coordinating robot movements. When it announced the system in June 2025, Amazon claimed DeepFleet improved robot fleet travel time by 10%. That is a company-reported travel-time result, not evidence of a 10% increase in overall warehouse productivity. The figure and system description are in Amazon’s DeepFleet announcement.
Are Amazon’s robots replacing workers?
Amazon describes its robotics systems as assisting employees and improving safety and productivity. The operational examples—moving inventory, helping with picking and stowing, and coordinating robot travel—show how automation can change the tasks people perform. They do not, by themselves, establish how many jobs have been created or eliminated, how work intensity has changed, or what the net effect on employment has been.

Amazon’s 2026 statement that robots assist with 75% of customer orders should be read narrowly: it is the company’s claim about orders receiving assistance, not a claim that robots independently fulfill 75% of orders. The cited company materials do not provide a workforce-impact study that would quantify displacement or establish the overall effect on employees.

Amazon’s 2024 Sustainability Report states that the company had more than 1.5 million full- and part-time employees around the globe. This is a dated company-reported workforce figure, not a current headcount for 2026. The report does not establish that Amazon is the world’s second-largest corporate employer, and that ranking should not be presented as verified based on the available official figures. What the figures do—and do not—show
- They show scale: Amazon has reported a robotics network of more than one million units and deployments across more than 300 facilities, with robots supporting multiple fulfillment-center tasks.
- They are company claims: The cited figures and performance statements come from Amazon, not an independent audit of its fleet, productivity or workforce effects.
- They use different measures: Manufactured, deployed and operating are distinct terms, and the available statements do not provide a common definition that reconciles them into one “active robot” total.
- They do not prove autonomous fulfillment: The claim that robots assist with 75% of orders does not mean robots complete those orders without employees or other parts of Amazon’s operations.
- They do not verify an employer ranking: The reported 2024 workforce figure is not proof of a global second-place ranking among corporate employers.
