How Many Photos Fit on a USB Flash Drive? The Real Answer

A 64GB USB flash drive might hold roughly 800 12MP photos or 16,000 phone photos averaging 4MB. Learn why estimates vary and how to calculate your own.

There is no single photo count for an “average” USB flash drive: it depends on the drive’s free space and the size and format of your images. On a 64GB drive, published estimates range from about 800 12-megapixel photos to roughly 16,000 phone photos assumed to average 4MB each. Those figures use different image assumptions, so your own files are the best guide.

Estimate Assumption Source
About 2,000 photos 10-megapixel camera SanDisk Support, updated June 3, 2026
About 800 photos 12MP photos Kingston Technology, April 2019 chart
About 6,400 photos 24MP uncompressed RAW Kingston Technology, April 2019 chart
About 16,000 photos Modern phone photos assumed to average about 4MB each Picture Keeper Help Center, accessed October 7, 2026

The spread is substantial because megapixels alone do not define file size: format and compression matter too. Kingston’s estimate for large, uncompressed RAW files is far below Picture Keeper’s estimate for approximately 4MB phone images.

Nominal USB capacity SanDisk estimate
8GB About 250 photos
16GB About 500 photos
32GB About 1,000 photos
64GB About 2,000 photos

SanDisk cautions that the actual quantity can vary by device. These counts should not be applied to RAW collections or treated as a universal phone-photo estimate. For a different reference point, Picture Keeper estimates about 4,000 images on 16GB and 8,000 on 32GB when photos average around 4MB. Its figures are estimates, and camera, settings, and image content affect file size.

Estimate how many of your photos will fit

Divide the drive’s available free space by the average size of your photo files, then round down. Use the space available to store photos—not just the capacity printed on the drive.

  1. Check free space. Connect the drive to your computer and check its available storage in the file manager or operating system’s storage view.
  2. Sample your images. Check the file sizes of several representative photos from the same camera or phone and average them. Include the formats you plan to copy.
  3. Divide available space by average photo size. For a rough illustration, 64GB divided by 4MB per image gives approximately 16,000 photos before allowing for formatting, existing files, and other stored data. This is arithmetic using Picture Keeper’s 4MB assumption, not a tested drive result.
  4. Leave a margin. File sizes vary from image to image, and a drive’s full nominal capacity is not available for your photos.

Why your photo count can differ

Format and compression

Compressed JPEG files generally occupy less space than uncompressed RAW files, so a drive can hold many more JPEGs. Kingston’s chart makes the difference concrete: it estimates about 800 12MP photos or 6,400 24MP uncompressed RAW photos on 64GB, under its respective chart assumptions.

Resolution and camera settings

Higher resolution can increase file size, but it is not the only factor. SanDisk’s memory-card capacity table lists a 12MP JPEG at 3.6MB; that figure is an image-size reference, not a USB-drive capacity estimate. Camera settings and image content also affect the size of the resulting file.

Available space on the drive

Formatting and other functions use some of a drive’s listed capacity, according to Kingston. Existing files reduce the space left for photos as well. Use current free space in your estimate rather than assuming every labeled gigabyte is available.
