Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo reliable figure exists for how many people use an administrator account for everyday work on a personal computer. The surveys we could find measure something else, so any percentage you see quoted should be treated with caution. What is well established is the guidance from the companies that build the two major desktop operating systems and from a national cyber-safety agency: do routine work from a standard account, and use administrator rights only when a task needs them. This article explains why the number is unknown, what that guidance says, how to check your own setup, and what a standard account does and does not protect. If you want to add to the picture, tell us in the comments whether you use an administrator or standard account for everyday tasks, and which operating system you run.
Why there is no reliable number
A credible prevalence figure would need a survey that asks people directly whether they use an administrator account for everyday tasks, and that documents its sample, country and field dates. The surveys that come up in searches do not meet that test. The AV-Comparatives IT Security Survey 2026, for example, asks about security products and operating-system choices, not about account privileges, so its results cannot be read as an estimate of administrator-account use. Informal polls, including the one in this article’s comments, show only what the people who respond do.

What the official guidance says
Windows
Microsoft’s documentation on User Account Control (UAC) describes it as a key Windows security feature and recommends that the primary account on a Windows PC be a standard account. Apps generally run with a standard user token unless the user consents to an elevation prompt or supplies credentials for an administrator account. A user who belongs to the Administrators group still browses and runs applications with a standard token by default; the full administrator token is used only after that user approves an elevation prompt.

This distinction matters. Being in the Administrators group and running a particular process with administrator rights are related but different things. A Windows administrator is not, by default, running every program with full rights.

macOS
Apple’s guidance in “Set up your Mac to be secure” says that administrator accounts can create, manage and delete users, install and remove software, and change settings. It recommends that an administrator create a standard user account for use whenever administrator privileges are not needed. If several people share a Mac, Apple also recommends limiting the number of administrator users.
Australian Cyber Security Centre
The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s guidance, “Secure your user account” (last updated 24 January 2024), is written for individuals, families and small and medium businesses. It recommends standard accounts for everyday tasks such as browsing and online shopping, and reserves administrator accounts for tasks that require them. It also explains that if a standard account is compromised, an intruder is limited by that account’s permissions.

Standard and administrator accounts compared
| Question | Standard account | Administrator account |
|---|---|---|
| Can it change settings that affect all users? | No, not on its own. Some changes need administrator approval or credentials. | Yes. This is the main difference in permissions. |
| Can it install and remove software? | Usually only with administrator credentials (Windows) or after an administrator approves (macOS). | Yes. |
| Can it create or delete other users? | No. | Yes (per Apple’s description of administrator accounts). |
| Recommended use | Everyday work such as browsing, email and shopping (ACSC guidance). | Tasks that need administrator privileges. |
| Limit on the number of accounts | Not applicable. | Apple recommends limiting administrator users on a shared Mac. |
What a standard account does and does not protect
A standard account narrows what an attacker can do through that account. It is a real benefit, but it is not complete protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- It limits the permissions available to malware or an intruder who gets into the account.
- Protected system changes still require administrator credentials, which is the point of the design.
- It does not stop every threat. Phishing, stolen passwords and malicious software that a user is tricked into approving remain risks, so it should sit alongside other controls such as updates and strong authentication.
Check your own account type
On Windows
- Open Settings and select Accounts, then Your info.
- Look beneath your name. An administrator account is labelled as an administrator; a standard account is labelled as a standard user.
Menu names and layouts change between Windows versions, so if the labels differ on your build, look for the account type under Settings > Accounts.

If you use an administrator account every day
Switching to a standard account for routine work takes a few minutes. Keep your administrator account for installing software, changing system settings and similar tasks.
- Windows: Open Settings, select Accounts, then Family & other users, and choose Add account. Create the new account as a standard user, then sign in with it for everyday work.
- macOS: Open System Settings, select Users & Groups, click Add User (the plus or add control, depending on macOS version), and set the account type to Standard.
- Sign in with the standard account and check that your everyday apps, files and settings work as expected.
- When a task needs administrator rights, approve the prompt or enter administrator credentials for that task only.
Shared computers
On a family or shared computer, the number of administrator accounts matters more than on a personal machine. Apple recommends keeping that number low, and giving everyone else a standard account. The same logic applies on Windows: each person who uses the computer regularly should have their own account, with administrator rights limited to the people who need them.
