To add a photo to a contact on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open the contact in the Contacts app, tap Edit, tap the picture area above the contact’s details, choose an image source, adjust the crop, and save. The steps are the same across most Galaxy models, but the exact labels and the extra options depend on your Android version and on where the contact is stored, so the sections below cover both.
How to add a photo to a contact
- Open the Contacts app and tap the contact you want to update.
- Tap Edit (the pencil icon).
- Tap the image or avatar area above the contact’s name and phone number fields.
- Choose an image source from the list offered. Typical options are taking a new photo with the camera or selecting an existing image from Gallery. On newer software, Samsung’s guide also lists Galaxy Avatar and a set of built-in icons.
- If the phone asks you to adjust the crop or framing, drag and resize the frame until the face or subject sits where you want it.
- Tap Done, then tap Save. Some software versions add a second save or apply step for avatars, so check the screen before you leave it.
Samsung’s Latin America guide, last updated 17 February 2023, describes the same sequence in simpler terms: select the contact, choose the image source, and save. If your screens look different from the steps above, the older flow still applies in broad terms.

How to change or remove a contact photo
Both actions start the same way: open the contact, tap Edit, and locate the avatar. How you open the avatar for editing depends on your Android version, as Samsung’s regional guide (updated 23 July 2026) explains.

Changing the photo
- Android 15 and 16: tap the edit button on the avatar.
- Android 14 and earlier: tap the avatar itself.
Then pick a different image source and follow the same add, crop, and save flow described above. The new image replaces the old one once you save.

Removing the photo
In Edit mode, select the minus control attached to the avatar, then save the contact. The contact returns to showing its default placeholder. If you cannot find a minus control, the avatar may not be editable in the way you expect; see the troubleshooting section below.
Which options depend on your Android version
Samsung’s guide separates two features: the avatar, which appears in the contact list and near the caller’s name, and the profile card, which can fill the incoming-call screen. Support for each depends on the Android version running on the phone.

Profile card media types are version-dependent, so a GIF or video option may not appear on every Galaxy phone even on Android 15 or 16. Samsung’s regional guide does not specify which models or software builds offer each media type.
Contacts that cannot take a photo
Contacts saved to a SIM card
Samsung states that a contact stored on a SIM card cannot be assigned a photo or profile card. To add an image, move the contact to phone or account storage first, or recreate it there. Storage options and the way they are labelled can differ by phone, so confirm the destination in the contact’s details before you assume the photo option will appear.

Google account contacts
Samsung’s regional guide says that imagery for contacts synced from a Google account follows Android’s profile-avatar behavior. In practice, that means the photo you set may be tied to the account rather than saved only on the device. If you need a contact photo to exist only on the phone, check how the contact is stored before you rely on that result.

- Confirm the storage location. A SIM contact will not accept a photo. Move or recreate the contact in phone or account storage, then try again.
- Confirm the Android version. On Android 14 and earlier, the edit action is a tap on the avatar itself, and the profile card is not available. Use the version table above to match what you see.
- Reselect the image source. Samsung’s guidance is that if an edit control is absent, you should choose the image source again. Tap the avatar area, pick a source, and complete the crop and save steps.
- Check the save step. If the new image does not appear, return to Edit and confirm that you tapped Done and Save, including any additional avatar step your version shows.
- Check model and carrier differences. Samsung US notes that screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and carrier. Some features may not be offered on your particular phone even when the steps above are correct.
Samsung’s US support page on managing contacts, accessed 7 October 2026, offers general editing guidance and the same variability caveat, which is useful if the controls on your phone differ from the Russian and Latin American guides.
