That is a historical count of scan-observed addresses—not a current census of routers, and not a count of devices whose administration interfaces were open to anyone.
What the 4.74 million figure counts
In a paper presented at IEEE/IFIP NOMS 2020, Ceron, Scholten, Pras and Santanna analyzed more than 4 TB of Shodan data gathered over one month in 2019. After deduplicating observations by IP address, they reported 4,742,944 distinct IP addresses related to MikroTik devices. The study also reports 6,484,420 distinct service records, but those records are not devices: one IP address can respond on multiple services.

The researchers’ initial Shodan query totals—1,657,859 for “mikrotik,” 3,700,193 for “product:mikrotik,” and 1,323 for “product:mikrotiksmb”—were counts of IP/open-port records. They should not be read as separate device totals or added together. The study combined observations and deduplicated addresses to estimate the number of IPs.

No. In this study, reachability means that Shodan observed a service response or banner associated with MikroTik at an IP address. A service being visible from the internet does not establish that WinBox, SSH, or another management interface is exposed. Nor does an open port prove that a stranger can log in, that a vulnerability is present, or that the device has been compromised.
The authors searched service banners for the string “mikrotik” as their identification method. They note that blank banners can cause false negatives and that their scan coverage was incomplete. Their count therefore describes scan observations, not a verification of each router’s management access controls.
Why this is not a current global total
The 4,742,944 figure describes the month-long dataset from July 17 to August 17, 2019. It is not a present-day count. No newer comparable global census is established by the available evidence, so there is no sound basis here for estimating how many MikroTik devices are reachable today.
#1 Best Overall
- hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
The estimate can miss devices that were offline, behind NAT, or not reached by the scans. It can also include stale observations: the authors caution that addresses gathered across a month may no longer have pointed to MikroTik devices. And an IP address is not necessarily one permanent physical router; addresses can change or be shared, while one device can expose several services. These limits make the result useful as a dated scale estimate, not a precise inventory of unique hardware.

MikroTik’s RouterOS Manual states: “By default, the pre-configured firewall blocks all management access from the WAN (internet-facing) interface.” That default is a useful protection, but configurations can be changed. MikroTik warns that directly exposing WinBox, SSH, or other management services can invite brute-force attempts, exploitation of known vulnerabilities, and compromise. Its guidance recommends using a VPN, such as WireGuard, for remote administration. MikroTik’s first-time configuration guidance also covers disabling management services that are not needed and turning off remote DNS requests when the router does not need to serve DNS to other devices.
