How Many Electricity Units Does an OBS YouTube Stream Use per Month in India?

OBS has no fixed monthly electricity use: estimate units from your setup’s average wall watts and actual streaming hours, then use your local tariff to estimate cost.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no fixed monthly electricity-unit figure for an OBS stream. It depends on how many hours your setup runs and its average power draw at the wall. Calculate it as average watts × streaming hours per day × days in the billing period ÷ 1,000. For example, a hypothetical 120 W desktop running 24 hours a day for 30 days would use 86.4 kWh, or 86.4 electricity units. That 120 W figure is an illustrative estimate, not a universal OBS benchmark or a measurement of your computer.

What determines an OBS stream’s electricity use?

OBS is software; it does not have a standard electricity consumption figure of its own. The computer doing the encoding—or a standalone encoder—and any other powered production equipment draw the electricity. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes computer and standalone-hardware setups, along with connected equipment such as microphones and webcams: YouTube Help: encoder settings and live streaming.

The key variables are the setup’s average wall power and the total hours it runs during your billing period. A power supply’s maximum rating is not the same as the computer’s actual average draw while streaming. For a variable workload, use a representative average rather than the highest number printed on a component.

Calculate monthly electricity units

One electricity unit on a household bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000, then multiply by the hours the equipment runs.

Monthly units (kWh) = average wall power (W) × streaming hours per day × days in month ÷ 1,000

Illustrative setup and schedule Calculation Monthly use
120 W average, streaming 24 hours a day for 30 days 120 × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 86.4 units (kWh)
120 W average, streaming 4 hours a day for 30 days 120 × 4 × 30 ÷ 1,000 14.4 units (kWh)

Both examples use the same hypothetical 120 W average draw. StreamNeo gives approximately 120 W as an illustrative mid-range desktop estimate for continuous streaming; it is not a representative study or a measurement of your particular PC. Its estimate notes that CPU x264 encoding may raise draw, while an otherwise idle gaming PC using NVENC can draw less: StreamNeo’s electricity-use example. No primary, representative study establishes a typical monthly electricity figure for OBS-to-YouTube streaming, so treat the examples as arithmetic illustrations, not typical-user consumption.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

Measure your own streaming setup

  1. Count actual streaming hours. Note hours per day and the number of days in the billing period, including days when the setup is off.
  2. Measure average power at the wall while streaming. A plug-in energy meter that records cumulative kWh can help if your equipment is electrically compatible and within the meter’s rating. The cited estimate is framed around desktop draw at the wall; it does not test or recommend a particular meter.
  3. Calculate the computer’s use. Multiply the measured average watts by monthly streaming hours, then divide by 1,000.
  4. Choose what the estimate includes. For the whole production setup, account separately for additional powered equipment, such as an encoder, display, microphone, or webcam, rather than assuming the computer figure covers it.
  5. Estimate the bill impact. Multiply estimated added units by the applicable per-unit energy charge on your electricity bill, then account for the rest of your tariff and bill conditions.

Why there is no single rupee cost for India

Units can be estimated without knowing your tariff, but converting them into rupees requires your applicable tariff and billing details. India’s retail electricity tariffs are determined by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, and state governments may subsidize some consumer classes. The Ministry of Power stated on 25 July 2024 that “the State Electricity Regulatory Commission determines the tariff for retail sale of electricity to end consumers”: Ministry of Power, PIB release, 25 July 2024.

Use the energy charge and relevant conditions on your own bill for a rough estimate. Actual bills can also reflect tariff category, slabs, subsidies, duties, adjustments, and fixed charges; a single national domestic rate would not reliably describe every household. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2024 tariff-and-duty reference and Puducherry’s official tariff-order index illustrate why the applicable jurisdiction and date matter: CEA tariff and duty reference and Puducherry tariff orders.

If you plan to stream prerecorded videos continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud handles the loop, so your home computer and internet connection do not have to stay on for the stream. This changes which equipment needs to run at home; it is not a claim about a specific electricity saving for your setup.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
