For 8TB of decimal storage, the answer ranges from 320 standard 25GB Blu-ray discs to 80 100GB Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, depending on the disc capacity. These are nominal capacity equivalents: formatted media may hold slightly less usable data, so the actual number can be higher.
How many Blu-ray discs make up 8TB?
Storage labels generally use decimal units: 1TB equals 1,000GB, so 8TB equals 8,000GB. Divide 8,000GB by the disc’s advertised capacity. When the result is fractional, round up if you need enough whole discs to meet or exceed 8TB.

| Disc type | Advertised capacity | Calculation | Whole discs for at least 8TB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard single-layer Blu-ray | 25GB | 8,000 ÷ 25 = 320 | 320 |
| Standard dual-layer Blu-ray | 50GB | 8,000 ÷ 50 = 160 | 160 |
| Dual-layer Ultra HD Blu-ray | 66GB | 8,000 ÷ 66 ≈ 121.2 | 122 |
| Triple-layer Ultra HD Blu-ray | 100GB | 8,000 ÷ 100 = 80 | 80 |
| Four-layer Blu-ray media | 128GB | 8,000 ÷ 128 = 62.5 | 63 |
The Blu-ray Disc Association describes standard discs as “25GB single layer or 50GB dual layer discs” (Blu-ray Disc Association specifications). For Ultra HD Blu-ray, the Association says discs hold up to 66GB on dual-layer media and 100GB on triple-layer media (2015 Ultra HD Blu-ray announcement). The 128GB figure is a nominal capacity for four-layer media; confirm that both the particular disc and the drive support that format before relying on the count.
What changes if you mean 8TiB instead of 8TB?
TB and TiB are different units. If the target is 8TiB, that is about 8,796.1 decimal GB, rather than 8,000GB. Rounded up to whole discs, the corresponding counts are:
#1 Best Overall
- High-capacity add-on storage.Specific uses: Business, personal
- Fast data transfers
- Plug-and-play ready for Windows PCs
- WD quality inside and out
- 352 25GB discs
- 176 50GB discs
- 134 66GB discs
- 88 100GB discs
- 69 128GB discs
This is why a device or operating system that reports capacity using a different unit convention can appear to show less space than the number printed on its storage label.
Are those counts usable storage totals?
No. They compare the advertised capacity of each disc with a nominal 8,000GB target. Panasonic specifies Blu-ray capacity using decimal units, with 1GB equal to one billion bytes, and notes that the usable area is slightly lower after formatting (Panasonic Blu-ray disc specifications). The exact usable amount depends on the media and data layout, so these calculations do not guarantee that the listed number of discs will store a particular 8TB dataset.
Rank #2
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
If you are recording data, leave room for the gap between advertised and usable capacity rather than treating the arithmetic as a precise burn plan. Sony’s support information identifies 25GB and 50GB BD-R and BD-RE media, with 50GB discs being dual-layer; BD-R is write-once, while BD-RE is rewritable (Sony’s guide to Blu-ray disc formats). The capacity calculation alone does not establish recording speed, longevity, price, or whether a particular drive can write every format.

Does disc capacity tell you how many movie hours fit?
Not reliably. Movie runtime depends on the video’s bitrate, compression, quality settings, and the title itself. A disc’s advertised data capacity cannot be converted into a fixed number of movie hours without those details.
