How Mainframe Batch Processing Handles Output, Retention, and Reruns

JES spools batch output, but retention is set by installation policy. Safe reruns depend on the restart type, checkpoint availability, data-set state, and operator procedures.

On z/OS, JES receives submitted batch jobs, schedules them for processing, and controls their output. Job output commonly goes to JES spool, where a user or operator may inspect it through SDSF or another authorized interface. How long it remains available—and whether a failed job can restart from a step or checkpoint—depends on JES configuration, the job’s JCL and application, site security, and operational procedures. There is no universal retention period or automatic resume behavior.

What happens to a batch job and its output?

A batch job is submitted in JCL. IBM describes JES as the component that “receives jobs into the system, schedules them for processing by z/OS, and controls their output processing.” The initiator runs the job’s steps after interpreting their requirements. During and after execution, output directed to SYSOUT is placed on JES spool for later handling.

Spool is an operational destination, not a promise of permanent storage. One job can produce several distinct output items: the submitted JCL, system messages associated with the job, and one or more SYSOUT data sets generated by its steps. Consequently, a spool display may show multiple entries for one job rather than a single consolidated report. IBM’s z/OS basic skills material describes JES’s role; IBM’s JES and SDSF documentation describes output content and handling.

SYSOUT, system messages, and JCL are different things

  • SYSOUT: Data directed to JES for later processing. The output class and destination influence how the installation handles it.
  • System messages: Messages about job submission, execution, and system activity. They are distinct from a program’s own SYSOUT data.
  • JCL: The job-control statements used to submit and define the work. A JES output view may include the submitted JCL as well as messages and generated data.

This distinction is useful when diagnosing a job: the application’s report may be in one SYSOUT data set while execution messages are in another output item. Finding one does not necessarily mean every output item has been located.

Where can users view or direct output?

SDSF is a common interface for monitoring jobs and viewing queued or held output. IBM notes that much job output is inspected online rather than physically printed; users or operators can inspect it, delete it, or direct it for other uses, depending on their permissions and installation setup. The TSO/E OUTPUT command can display or direct output, print it to a data set, change its class or destination, release it, or delete it.

These are platform mechanisms, not guarantees that every user can see or manipulate every job. Visibility can depend on ownership, security profiles, security labels where they are used, output class, and local access controls. A job may have completed successfully while its output is unavailable to a particular user, or output may have been routed somewhere other than the queue the user is checking.

A practical way to locate output

  1. Identify the job. Use the job name and job identifier supplied at submission or by the scheduler. Check that the job has actually been submitted and reached the expected status.
  2. Look for the output items, not just the job row. In the authorized SDSF view, inspect the job’s available output and distinguish SYSOUT data from system messages and JCL.
  3. Check class and destination. If the expected item is absent, ask the operations team whether its class, routing, or destination sends it to another queue, a printer, or a data set.
  4. Check access and availability. Confirm that your account is permitted to view the job and that the output has not been released, deleted, or automatically purged.
  5. Use an approved retrieval or handling method. Where permitted, TSO/E OUTPUT can perform actions such as directing output to a data set or changing its destination. Follow local procedures, especially before changing or deleting output.

The exact SDSF panels, commands, security behavior, and output class names vary by installation. Use the site’s documented interface and permissions rather than assuming that a particular queue name or command works everywhere.

How long is batch output retained?

There is no site-neutral number of days that applies to all z/OS batch output. JES configuration and output disposition determine whether output is held, released, routed, or automatically purged; local scheduler procedures and archival processes can add further rules. SDSF can show output only while it remains available to the system and the user has suitable access.

That means “the job ran” and “the output can still be retrieved” are separate questions. A completed job’s output might remain in a held queue, be processed elsewhere, be archived under a local process, or be purged automatically. A user cannot infer retention from job completion status alone. Nor does an online spool view by itself establish whether a separate archive exists.

What to verify at your installation

  • Output classes and routing: Which classes are used, where they send output, and whether a class is intended for online inspection, printing, or another destination.
  • Hold and release defaults: Whether output is held for review or released for automatic processing.
  • Automatic purge: Which output is purged, under what configuration or disposition, and when that occurs.
  • Access controls: Which users may view, redirect, release, or delete output for a given job.
  • Archival procedures: Whether important output is copied or otherwise retained outside the active JES queue, and how an authorized user retrieves it.
  • Scheduler procedures: Whether the workload automation system applies retention or cleanup rules in addition to JES behavior.

IBM’s documentation explains the available mechanisms, but it does not establish a universal retention interval for a particular site. For a required retention period, obtain the installation’s JES output-class definitions and operational policy rather than relying on a general z/OS rule.

What does “rerun” mean?

“Rerun” is often used for several different recovery actions. Before changing JCL or resubmitting work, determine whether the intention is to start the entire job again, restart at a named step, restart at an application checkpoint, or use an authorized automatic-restart facility. These options have different prerequisites and can produce different data-integrity risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Recovery choice Where processing starts What it requires
Whole-job resubmission At the beginning of the job A safe way to repeat the work, including any needed cleanup or protection against duplicate effects.
Deferred step restart At a named job step or procedure step A JCL restart request and data sets in the state and disposition the restarted step expects.
Deferred checkpoint restart At a named step and checkpoint ID A checkpoint created by the application, a restart request identifying it, and access to the checkpoint data set through SYSCHK.
Automatic restart As allowed by the configured restart mechanism A restart request, an eligible failure, required authorization, and—in a checkpoint restart—a successful checkpoint.

The table describes broad distinctions, not a promise that any option is enabled at a particular site. A batch job does not automatically have a checkpoint, and a restart request cannot manufacture one after a failure.

How a deferred step or checkpoint restart works

For deferred restart, IBM’s JCL documentation describes the JOB statement’s RESTART parameter. A step restart identifies a named step, including a procedure step where relevant. A checkpoint restart identifies both the step and a checkpoint ID; the restart job also identifies the checkpoint data set with SYSCHK. Checkpoint restart is useful only if the application established the checkpoint and the restart environment can access it.

Step restart is not equivalent to continuing the failed program at the exact statement where it stopped. It begins at the selected step. Any earlier steps are skipped, so their outputs, side effects, and data-set changes must already be suitable for the step being rerun. Likewise, a checkpoint restart begins from an application-defined checkpoint, not from an arbitrary point selected after the failure.

Before submitting a deferred restart

  1. Establish the failure state. Review the job messages and application output to determine which steps completed, which failed, and what work may already have taken effect.
  2. Choose a restart boundary deliberately. Select a step only if its inputs and the effects of skipped steps are understood. Select a checkpoint only if the application created the required checkpoint and its identifier and data set are available.
  3. Inspect the relevant JCL and data sets. Confirm that the restart job’s references and dispositions match the actual state of the data, rather than simply reusing the original JCL unchanged.
  4. Verify access to restart resources. A checkpoint restart needs access to the checkpoint data set identified through SYSCHK; other required data sets must also be available to the restarted step.
  5. Obtain operational approval where required. Follow site restart procedures, including scheduler and operator controls, before resubmitting production work.
  6. Monitor the restarted job and validate its result. Check the new execution output and downstream data before treating the original work as recovered.

The exact syntax and requirements should be checked against the z/OS release installed at the site. IBM documentation reviewed for these behaviors spans z/OS 2.5, 3.1, and 3.2; JES2 and JES3 also have distinct details despite sharing broad concepts.

Why data-set disposition matters

A restart can fail or corrupt results if the data-set state does not match what the selected step expects. IBM’s deferred step restart guidance calls for particular care with newly created data sets, passed data sets, and data sets opened as OLD. In general, newly created data sets used by the step may need to be deleted before restart; passed data sets may need to be cataloged so the restart can find them; and OLD data sets required by the restarted step must be kept.

These are not interchangeable cleanup rules. Deleting a data set the step needs can make restart impossible; retaining an output that the step recreates can cause a conflict or duplicate processing. The right action depends on the JCL, the failure point, and the site’s recovery procedure.

Special cases need job-specific handling

  • Tape data sets opened with MOD: Positioning and continuation rules require attention; do not assume that a restart will append at the correct point without checking the job’s requirements.
  • Generation data sets: Restart behavior depends on the generation data set references and what was created before failure. Follow the installed release documentation and local conventions.
  • Passed data sets: A data set passed between steps may not be discoverable to a separately submitted restart unless it is preserved and made available as required.
  • Existing data sets opened as OLD: If the restarted step requires them, their availability and disposition must be preserved.

These details are why a restart should be treated as a recovery operation, not simply as a second submission. For a production job, the responsible team should determine which data is disposable, which is authoritative, and whether the failed run already performed external or downstream work.

When can z/OS restart a job automatically?

Automatic restart is conditional; z/OS does not generically resume every failed batch job. IBM documents requirements that include a restart request using RD=R or RD=RNC, a failure that is eligible for restart, and operator authorization. Automatic checkpoint/restart additionally requires that a successful checkpoint be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The existence of a restart-related parameter therefore does not prove that every abend will trigger recovery. Eligibility, authorization, checkpoint success, and site procedures all matter. If automatic restart is not requested or the failure does not qualify, operators may instead follow a manual recovery plan or submit a deferred restart after checking the job’s state.

Where workload automation fits

A scheduler can add recovery and output-handling procedures around JES. IBM Z Workload Scheduler 10.2.7 documentation describes capabilities for inspecting job output, tailoring JCL to restart between named steps, and performing cleanup actions. Such automation is an optional workload-management layer; it is not an inherent behavior of every JES installation.

When a scheduler is involved, the recovery path may include both scheduler state and z/OS job state. Confirm whether a scheduler procedure modifies restart JCL, cleans up data sets, or controls resubmission, and use the site’s documented process rather than bypassing the scheduler with a manual submission. The scheduler’s configured actions still need to match the job’s actual data dependencies.

How to compare two output or recovery setups

There is no universally best class, retention setting, or restart design. Compare environments or job procedures using the operational questions below; the correct choice depends on the application’s output needs, recovery design, and site policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision area Questions to answer
Output destination and class Is output kept for spool inspection, routed to a printer or remote destination, or written to a data set?
Retention and retrieval Is output held, released, automatically purged, or archived? Who is allowed to retrieve it?
Restart granularity Does recovery repeat the entire job, start at a step, or resume from an application-created checkpoint?
Restart preconditions Are restart settings present? Is the failure eligible? Is a checkpoint available? Is authorization or scheduler support required?
Data integrity How are NEW, OLD, and passed data sets handled? Are tape MOD positioning and generation data sets addressed?

Documenting these answers per production job is more useful than assuming all jobs on the same system share a single retention or recovery behavior. IBM’s release-specific documentation describes platform syntax and mechanisms; the local JCL, configuration, security controls, and runbook determine the procedure users actually follow.
