How Main Battle Tanks Differ from Light Tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles

Main battle tanks focus on protected direct-fire combat, IFVs carry and support infantry, and “light tank” describes a context-dependent lighter direct-fire concept. Here is how to tell them apart without relying on misleading weight or gun-caliber rules.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical difference is the job each vehicle is designed to do. A main battle tank (MBT) is built around protected, direct-fire combat against enemy armor and other hard targets. An infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) carries soldiers under armor, lets them fight mounted or on foot, and adds fire support. A light tank is a less standardized idea: usually a more deployable, lighter protected direct-fire vehicle whose exact role depends on a particular army, period and program.

Weight, gun caliber or appearance alone cannot classify every vehicle. Start with mission, then examine whether infantry are carried, how the weapons are intended to be used, and what protection and mobility trade-offs the design accepts.

The three categories at a glance

Vehicle type Primary purpose Typical battlefield question What the label does not guarantee
Main battle tank Protected direct-fire combat, including fighting enemy armored units Can this vehicle defeat and survive a fight with heavily protected targets? No universal weight, armor or speed threshold defines every MBT.
Light tank A lighter protected direct-fire concept shaped by a specific doctrine or procurement program Can this force deliver tank-like firepower where strategic or tactical mobility matters more than maximum protection? “Light tank” is not one globally agreed modern category.
Infantry fighting vehicle Transport infantry under armor and support their mounted and dismounted combat Can the vehicle deliver a squad to the fight, protect it, and continue fighting alongside it? An IFV is not merely a taxi; it can carry substantial weapons, including antitank systems.

The German Army describes the Leopard 2 as its main battle tank and identifies the Puma and Marder as infantry fighting vehicles. Its description of armored forces presents tanks and armored infantry as a combined-arms team rather than as interchangeable vehicles (Bundeswehr, “Armoured Forces,” published August 8, 2025).

The British Army uses Challenger 2 as an MBT example and says its design balances protection, firepower and mobility. The Army’s own wording is that “The effectiveness of a tank is determined by a balance between its protection, firepower and mobility” (British Army, “Challenger 2,” specifications accessed October 13, 2026).

Main battle tanks: protected direct-fire specialists

Mission

An MBT is the force’s heavily protected direct-fire combatant. Its central tasks commonly include defeating enemy tanks, armored vehicles, fortified positions and other targets in open or semi-open terrain. The German Army summarizes the primary task of its main battle tanks as engaging enemy armored units in open terrain. That is a role description, not a rule that an MBT can attack only tanks.

MBTs are normally employed where commanders expect intense fire and where the vehicle must keep operating after taking hits or crossing difficult ground. They are usually part of a combined-arms formation with infantry, engineers, artillery, air defense and reconnaissance rather than independent “super weapons.”

Firepower

A tank’s main gun is optimized for direct fire. Ammunition choices and fire-control systems allow crews to engage different target types, but the defining point is the ability to deliver accurate, destructive fire while moving or from short halts. Secondary machine guns and sighting systems support the main gun and help the crew deal with less-protected threats.

For a concrete, source-specific example, the British Army lists Challenger 2 with a 120 mm L30A1 main armament. That caliber is a Challenger 2 specification, not a definition of every MBT. Other countries use different guns and ammunition families.

Protection and mobility

Protection usually includes a heavily armored hull and turret, internal measures intended to improve crew survivability, and sometimes add-on armor modules. Mobility is still essential: the tank must maneuver, use cover, cross obstacles and keep pace with the formation. More armor increases mass, which can affect speed, bridges, transportability, fuel use and maintenance.

The British Army publishes Challenger 2 at 62.5 tonnes in base mass and 75.0 tonnes combat-ready with add-on armor modules. It lists a maximum road speed of 59 km/h and an off-road speed of 40 km/h. Those figures describe that vehicle as currently published by the British Army as accessed on October 13, 2026; they are not class-wide MBT limits.

Light tanks: a role and doctrine, not a universal measurement

Why the term is difficult

“Light tank” sounds like a simple weight category, but modern armies do not use one fixed international threshold. A vehicle called a light tank in one era or country may be described as a combat vehicle, reconnaissance vehicle or infantry-support vehicle elsewhere. Historical classifications also changed as armor, engines and transport requirements evolved.

For that reason, do not classify an unfamiliar vehicle solely by tonnage. Ask what the sponsoring force expects it to do, what threats it is designed to face, and what capability was deliberately sacrificed to make it lighter or easier to deploy.

Typical design priorities

Light-tank concepts generally emphasize some combination of strategic deployability, bridge and road access, lower logistical demand, tactical agility and direct fire in support of infantry or reconnaissance. They may be useful where a full MBT is too heavy for the terrain, infrastructure or available air and sea lift.

The trade-off is usually reduced protection, smaller ammunition capacity, less ability to absorb hits, or a weapon system that is less capable against the heaviest armored targets than an MBT’s. Exactly which compromises apply depends on the vehicle; none should be assumed from the label alone.

The M10 Booker example

The U.S. M10 Booker illustrates why program context matters. U.S. Army material described it as a mobile protected-firepower or direct-fire vehicle intended to support infantry brigades. That description shows a mission distinction from an MBT without proving that every army recognizes “light tank” as a standard category.

On June 11, 2025, the U.S. Army announced that it would cease M10 Booker procurement and that the vehicle would not enter full-rate production. The Army’s program fact sheet still provides a useful description of the intended infantry-support role, but the program’s acquisition status means it should not be presented as a current universally issued light tank.

Infantry fighting vehicles: transport, protection and combat in one system

The infantry-carrying requirement

An IFV is designed to carry an infantry team under armor, deliver it close to the objective and continue fighting after the soldiers dismount. The carried troops are not incidental cargo: their ability to clear buildings, hold ground, enter trenches, identify targets and protect the vehicle is central to the vehicle’s purpose.

The German Army says both the Puma and Marder can carry as many as six soldiers. That is a specification for those two vehicles, not a universal IFV capacity. Other IFVs carry different numbers depending on internal layout, protection and ammunition stowage.

Mounted and dismounted combat

Infantry may remain mounted while moving under fire, observe and engage through vehicle systems, then dismount when terrain, obstacles or the mission require foot movement. The Bundeswehr summarizes the principle as: “Mounted for as long as possible – dismounted for no longer than necessary.” The phrase describes alternating mounted and dismounted tactics, not a claim that infantry should always stay inside the vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An IFV therefore has two connected jobs: protect and move the squad, and provide fire support before, during and after the dismount. Its commander must coordinate with the infantry leader so that speed, weapons and dismount timing match the ground and enemy situation.

Weapons and antitank capability

IFVs commonly mount an automatic cannon, machine guns, sensors and sometimes guided antitank missiles. The German Army describes the Puma’s stabilized automatic cannon as capable of precise engagement out to 3,000 metres while moving. That is a Puma-specific capability, not a universal range for all IFVs.

The Marder demonstrates why “only tanks fight tanks” is wrong. The Bundeswehr states that Marder crews can engage main battle tanks and armored vehicles with antitank weapons such as the MILAN guided missile. An IFV’s antitank weapon improves the infantry formation’s options, but it does not make the IFV’s primary mission identical to an MBT’s. The IFV still has to carry, protect and coordinate with infantry.

How the vehicles differ in the decisions that matter

Mission and intended targets

Mission is the most reliable first test. An MBT is optimized for protected direct-fire action against armored and fortified threats. An IFV is optimized around an infantry squad’s movement and fighting, with vehicle weapons supporting that squad. A light-tank concept occupies the space between those ideas only when a specific doctrine assigns it a lighter direct-fire role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are priorities, not exclusive target lists. Tanks can suppress infantry, IFVs can defeat armored vehicles with suitable weapons, and light vehicles can perform reconnaissance or security tasks. The distinction is what the design must do routinely and what it gives up to do so.

Infantry carried

  • MBT: its crew operates the vehicle; it is not designed to deliver a full infantry squad as its primary function.
  • IFV: carries infantry under armor and supports them after dismounting.
  • Light tank: may carry no infantry or only a small specialist team, depending on the program; carrying a squad is not inherent to the label.

Protection

MBTs generally devote the greatest share of their design to surviving direct fire. IFVs must balance protection with internal volume for soldiers, ammunition and dismount access. A light-tank concept normally accepts less protection than an MBT to gain deployability or mobility, although the exact level varies.

Mobility and deployability

Mobility has several meanings. Tactical mobility is the ability to maneuver across a battlefield. Operational mobility is the ability to move between theaters by road, rail or ship. Strategic deployability includes the aircraft, landing craft, bridges, fuel and maintenance needed to get a vehicle into action. A lighter vehicle may be easier to deploy, but that does not automatically make it faster or more capable in every terrain.

Crew and logistics

All three types require trained crews, maintenance, fuel, ammunition and recovery support. MBTs generally impose the greatest transport and sustainment burden because of their mass and power requirements. IFVs add the demands of carrying and protecting infantry. A light vehicle may reduce some burdens, but a complex turret, cannon, missile system or sensor suite can still require substantial support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How they operate as a combined-arms team

The categories make the most sense when viewed together. The German Army describes armored forces as a combined-arms service of armor and armored infantry, with tanks and IFVs supporting one another according to terrain and task.

Open terrain

In open terrain, MBTs can use their protection, sensors and direct-fire weapons to engage enemy armored units. IFVs keep infantry close enough to seize ground, protect the tanks from threats that require dismounted soldiers and use their own weapons against lighter vehicles or firing positions.

Close terrain and urban areas

Buildings, woods, trenches and restrictive ground reduce the advantages of long-range tank engagement. Infantry are needed to search spaces, identify ambushes and control ground that vehicles cannot occupy. IFVs provide protected movement and fire support, while MBTs may use their guns against strongpoints when the terrain and rules of engagement permit.

Reconnaissance and security

A lighter direct-fire vehicle may be chosen for missions where road access, transportability or a lower logistical footprint matters more than maximum armor. Whether it is called a light tank or another type of combat vehicle depends on the force using it. The mission assignment, not the marketing name, determines how it fits into the formation.

A practical identification method

  1. Read the stated role. Look for terms such as “main battle tank,” “armored infantry,” “infantry support,” “protected firepower” or “direct fire.” Official service descriptions are more reliable than visual guesses.
  2. Check whether it carries infantry. A dedicated passenger compartment, rear dismount doors or a stated squad capacity strongly indicates an IFV.
  3. Identify the weapon’s job. A large tank gun suggests a direct-fire armored-combat role; an automatic cannon and antitank missile combination is common on IFVs, but weapon fit alone is not conclusive.
  4. Assess protection and mobility together. Heavy armor, high mass and deliberate survivability investments point toward an MBT. A design advertised around rapid deployment or access to lighter infrastructure may reflect a light-tank concept, but confirm the doctrine.
  5. Check the vehicle’s status and date. Procurement names and programs change. A prototype, cancelled program or retired vehicle should not be described as a current standard system.

Common misconceptions

“A light tank is simply an MBT with less armor.”

Sometimes that is a useful shorthand, but it is incomplete. The lighter vehicle may be designed around a different deployment problem, infantry-support mission or reconnaissance doctrine. There is no single current threshold that turns an MBT into a light tank.

“An IFV is just an armored personnel carrier with a bigger gun.”

An IFV does carry infantry, but it is expected to participate in combat and support the squad with its own weapons and sensors. The distinction from a basic armored personnel carrier is the expectation of sustained fighting alongside the infantry, not merely protected transportation.

“Only MBTs can destroy tanks.”

IFVs can carry guided antitank weapons, and infantry may use their own antitank systems. The MBT remains optimized for armored direct-fire combat, while the IFV’s antitank capability supports a broader infantry mission.

“The heaviest vehicle is always the best choice.”

Mass can improve protection, but it also affects bridges, transport, fuel, recovery and access. The right vehicle depends on terrain, enemy, mission, infrastructure and the rest of the force. A lighter system may be preferable for one operation and inadequate for another.

Examples and status cautions

  • Leopard 2: identified by the German Army as its primary main battle tank weapon system.
  • Puma: a German IFV whose stabilized automatic cannon is described as engaging targets precisely to 3,000 metres while moving; it has gradually replaced the Marder in field units.
  • Marder: a German IFV that remains in use according to the Bundeswehr page and can employ MILAN antitank missiles.
  • Challenger 2: a British Army MBT designed to destroy other tanks; the Army publishes the vehicle specifications cited above.
  • M10 Booker: a U.S. infantry-supporting direct-fire program whose procurement was ended in June 2025 before full-rate production.

Vehicle deployments, specifications and acquisition decisions can change. Before describing a system as currently deployed, in service or being procured, consult the relevant military service’s latest official information and note the date.

Bottom line: classify the job before the vehicle

An MBT is the protected direct-fire heavyweight of a combined-arms force. An IFV is the armored infantry team’s vehicle, carrying soldiers, fighting with them and adding weapons that can include antitank missiles. A light tank is a context-dependent lighter direct-fire solution whose meaning must be established from the country, period and program involved.

If you remember one test, ask: What must this vehicle do every day, and what capability did its designers trade away to do that job? That question is more accurate than any universal weight or gun-caliber cutoff.
