Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A padlock on a PS5 game usually means the console cannot currently verify the license or entitlement associated with the game. Start with the built-in repair: open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the affected license, and try the game again. You can also highlight the game on the Home screen or in Game Library, press the options button, and choose Restore License.
PlayStation says restoring licenses does not delete games, saves, or other user data: “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” If the padlock remains, do not assume the subscription expired. Check the purchasing account, transaction history, subscription entitlement, console-sharing settings, PlayStation service status, system software, and finally PS5 Safe Mode.

Restore the license first
Use either of these two PS5 routes. Both perform the same license-restoration function.

- Open Settings from the PS5 Home screen.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose the license for the locked game and let the process finish.
Afterward, return to the game and test it. If the padlock disappears, no further troubleshooting is required.

Restoring a license is a verification action, not an uninstall or reset. It does not affect your data, according to PlayStation Support.
What a padlock can indicate
The icon identifies an access problem, but it does not identify one universal cause. The game may be tied to a different account, an entitlement may need to be rechecked, a shared-game setting may be disabled, or the console may be unable to complete an online service check. A padlock by itself is not proof that a PlayStation Plus subscription expired.
Identify how you obtained the game before changing settings. The correct check depends on whether it was bought by the signed-in account, obtained through PlayStation Plus, or bought by another account that shares access on this PS5.
| How the game was obtained | First entitlement check | Account or console condition |
|---|---|---|
| Individual purchase | Confirm the signed-in account made the purchase and review its transaction history for a successful transaction. | The account that owns the purchase must be signed in when you verify access. |
| PlayStation Plus | Confirm the subscription is active and that the game is still available through the service. | Availability depends on the service entitlement, not merely on the game remaining installed. |
| Another account on the same PS5 | Check that the owning account has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5. | The setting permits other users of that console to play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including while offline. |
Follow this troubleshooting order
Work from the least disruptive check to the more advanced recovery step. Stop as soon as the game opens normally; later steps are only for a lock that survives the earlier checks.
1. Run Restore Licenses
Complete one of the two procedures above while connected to the account that should have access. PlayStation lists a padlock as a situation in which license restoration can help. The process does not alter saved data or remove installed content.
2. Confirm the purchasing account
Sign in to the account that originally bought the game. A PS5 can contain several user profiles, and a game purchased by one account is not automatically a purchase belonging to every profile. If you attempt restoration from an account with no entitlement, the padlock can remain because there is no license for that account to recover.
Use the account’s transaction history to confirm that the purchase completed successfully. This check distinguishes a genuine purchase from an interrupted transaction, a purchase made under a different profile, or a game that was only temporarily available through another entitlement.
- Check the exact account currently signed in.
- Look for the game in that account’s transaction history.
- Verify that the transaction shows a successful purchase rather than an incomplete or failed attempt.
- Restore the license again from the verified owner account if necessary.
3. Check PlayStation Plus access separately
If the game came from PlayStation Plus, verify two things: the subscription is active, and the title remains available through the service. A downloaded game can stay on the storage device even when the entitlement that permits it to launch is no longer valid.
Do not use the padlock alone as evidence of a subscription expiration. PlayStation’s restore-license guidance specifically treats the padlock use case separately from PlayStation Plus subscription expiration. Confirm the subscription and the game’s current service availability before drawing that conclusion.
4. Check Console Sharing and Offline Play
This step applies when a different account owns the game. On the PS5, the purchasing account should enable Console Sharing and Offline Play. With that setting enabled, other users of the console can play games that the owner purchased and downloaded, including when the console is offline.

There is an important limit: the setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. If the owner has enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on another PS5, access on this console may not work as expected until the setting is changed to this device.
Have the owning account perform the check. A non-owner profile cannot establish ownership merely by restoring its own licenses. Once sharing is enabled on this PS5, return to the affected user and test the game again.
5. Check PlayStation service status
License verification can depend on PlayStation services. If the service-status page reports an outage or maintenance affecting account, store, or game services, wait for service to recover and test again. Repeating local repairs during a confirmed outage will not correct a server-side verification failure.
If no service incident is reported, continue with the local checks below. Service status is a diagnostic branch, not a replacement for confirming the account’s entitlement.
6. Install the latest PS5 system software
PlayStation’s locked-game troubleshooting sequence includes installing the latest system software. An outdated system can fail to handle current account or license checks correctly, so apply any available update before moving to Safe Mode.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →After the update completes, restart the console, sign in to the account that owns or receives the entitlement, and test the game. If the padlock remains, continue rather than repeatedly restoring the same license.
7. Recheck Console Sharing and Offline Play, then restore the license again
PlayStation’s escalation order calls for activating Console Sharing and Offline Play, followed by another license restoration. This order matters when the entitlement belongs to another account: first make the owner’s purchase available to users of this PS5, then refresh the console’s license records.
If the game is owned directly by the current account rather than shared, the sharing check may not apply. Keep the focus on the entitlement type you identified earlier.
8. Use PS5 Safe Mode only after the entitlement checks
If the account, purchase or subscription, sharing setting, service status, and system software all check out, use PS5 Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option. PlayStation includes this as a later-stage step for a game that remains locked after the earlier checks.

Safe Mode is a recovery environment, so follow the PS5’s on-screen instructions carefully. Select the specific Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option rather than treating Safe Mode as a reason to reset the console. The documented troubleshooting step is the cache/database operation.

When the process finishes, start the PS5 normally and launch the game from the account that has the entitlement. If the padlock is still present, the remaining issue is unlikely to be solved by repeating the same local action.

The lock disappears after restoration
The console’s license record was the immediate problem. You can continue playing normally; restoring the license does not affect your data.
The game is missing from the purchasing account’s history
Check other PS5 user accounts before changing the console. The game may have been purchased under a different account, or the transaction may not have completed. Restore licenses from the account that actually owns the purchase.

The owner can play, but another user sees a padlock
Check Console Sharing and Offline Play on the owner’s account and make sure this PS5 is the one console where that setting is enabled. Then restore licenses and test the other user’s profile.
A PlayStation Plus game is locked while the game is still installed
Verify that the subscription is active and that the title remains included in the service. Installation alone does not establish a current entitlement, and the icon alone does not prove that the subscription expired.
Several games become locked at once
Check PlayStation service status and the account currently signed in before treating each game as a separate installation problem. A service or account-verification issue can affect access to more than one title.
Only one game remains locked after all checks
Confirm that the exact game edition belongs to the verified account or entitlement. If the transaction, subscription, sharing setting, system software, service status, license restoration, and Safe Mode database step all check out, contact PlayStation Support with the account and transaction details available.
What to have ready for PlayStation Support
Support can investigate more efficiently when you can identify the affected user and the entitlement path. Prepare:
- The PS5 user account that should own or access the game.
- Whether the game was purchased directly, obtained through PlayStation Plus, or shared from another account.
- The transaction-history result for a direct purchase.
- The status of the subscription, if applicable.
- Whether Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on this PS5.
- The result of Restore Licenses, the system-software update, and the Safe Mode cache/database step.
- Whether PlayStation service status showed an incident when you tested.
These details separate an entitlement problem from a console-state problem and prevent support from having to repeat checks you have already completed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every padlock means an expired subscription: the icon can also involve account ownership, sharing, service availability, or local license verification.
- Restoring from the wrong profile: restoration cannot create a purchase for an account that never owned the game.
- Ignoring the owner’s sharing setting: a shared purchase depends on Console Sharing and Offline Play being enabled on this PS5.
- Repeating restoration during an outage: check PlayStation service status first when several titles or account features are affected.
- Jumping straight to Safe Mode: verify entitlement and software conditions before using the cache/database recovery option.
- Assuming installed means licensed: files can remain installed even when the account no longer has the required entitlement.
When the padlock is not a license-repair problem
Restore Licenses is appropriate when the console needs to refresh an entitlement it should already recognize. It is not a way to transfer a purchase between accounts, renew a PlayStation Plus subscription, make a removed service title permanently available, or override a sharing setting on another PS5.
Use the access path as the deciding factor: direct purchases require the purchasing account, PlayStation Plus games require a current subscription and service availability, and shared games require the owner’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting on this console. Only after those conditions are satisfied should you treat the remaining lock as a local PS5 troubleshooting issue.
