How Maarg Tracks Python Experiments Without Repeated Logging Calls

Maarg describes a decorator-driven way to track Python function executions, capture arguments and outputs, and save runs to a local SQLite database.

Maarg tracks Python function executions from a decorator: add @track, and the package’s described workflow captures the call’s arguments, return information and execution time without placing explicit logging calls throughout the function. Runs are described as being stored locally in SQLite at .maarg/runs.db. This is an early-stage approach aimed at developers comparing quick experiments or parameter sweeps—not a claim that every output type is automatically understood or that tracking cannot affect a run.

What Maarg tracks at a function boundary

Instead of instrumenting experiment code with repeated calls such as log_metric(), log_param() and log_artifact(), Maarg’s developer describes tracking a function execution as a unit. A function marked with @track is the boundary: the package uses Python’s inspect.signature to bind positional and keyword arguments, including parameter defaults, and records return information and execution timing.

That changes where the tracking work sits. The function body can focus on the experiment, while the decorator handles the call-level record. It is useful to think of this as reducing manual instrumentation, not eliminating the need to decide what to compare or how to interpret results.

What gets captured from a run

The reported handling depends on the return value:

  • Arguments and defaults: Call arguments are bound against the function signature, with parameter defaults included in the record.
  • Numeric dictionary values: A returned dictionary whose values are numeric scalars is treated as metrics.
  • Matplotlib figures: If Matplotlib is installed, returned figures can be serialized as PNG artifacts.
  • Other return values: Values outside those described cases are captured in an execution ledger rather than automatically converted into a metric or artifact.

In practice, a function that returns a dictionary of scalar measurements fits the described metric path more directly than one returning an arbitrary custom object. Figure capture also has an optional dependency: the core library is described as requiring no external dependencies, but Matplotlib must be installed for the figure-to-PNG behavior.

Where runs are stored and how to query them

Maarg’s author describes each run as being serialized to a local SQLite database at .maarg/runs.db. The package is said to use Python standard-library modules including sqlite3, inspect, json and dataclasses, with no required external dependencies. This is a local-storage workflow; the cited description does not establish a managed service, remote backend or synchronization feature.

The article’s query example uses get_runs() to retrieve runs and top_n() to inspect top trials. The available account does not specify query options or a complete code example, so those names should be treated as the reported interface rather than a guarantee about the current package API.

What happens when the tracked function fails

The developer says Maarg records the failure’s stack trace and status in SQLite, then re-raises the original exception. That means the experiment’s exception still surfaces to its caller; tracking is not described as swallowing the error.

There is also an important limitation: making tracking errors non-fatal is described as planned failure-isolation work, not as an existing behavior. The source likewise describes a more extensible serializer system as future work. For workflows where a tracking problem must never interfere with an experiment, the described behavior does not establish that guarantee.

Installation and maturity: what the article reports

The source article lists installation with pip install maarg and identifies the package as version 0.2.0.post1, describing it as early alpha. Those are article-era details; they were not independently verified against a package registry here, so check the package’s current release information before relying on that version or command.

Maarg’s central trade-off is clear from the described design: function-boundary capture and local SQLite persistence can reduce repeated logging code for simple experiment runs, while supported output types, failure isolation and maturity remain relevant constraints. The available account does not provide a measured comparison of performance or completeness against other tracking systems.
