As of October 4, 2026, Apple lists the iPad (9th generation) as compatible with iPadOS 27.0.1, released September 28, 2026. Apple has not announced when major iPadOS updates will end for this model, so its final supported version and the number of years of updates remaining are unknown.
What the latest Apple listing confirms
Apple’s security releases listing dates iPadOS 27 to September 14, 2026, and iPadOS 27.0.1 to September 28, 2026. Both entries include iPad (9th generation) among the eligible models; 27.0.1 is the newest release shown for it in that listing as of October 4, 2026.

This confirms compatibility with those releases at those dates. It does not establish how many later major iPadOS versions the iPad 9 will support, or how long Apple will provide future security releases for it.
When will the iPad 9 stop getting major updates?
Apple has not published a model-specific end date or named the iPad 9’s final major iPadOS version in the cited sources. Any specific cutoff year or promise of a certain number of years remaining would therefore be a prediction, not a confirmed support term.

Apple’s 2024 Longevity by Design report says OS feature updates have reached as far back as six years from a device’s original release. That is a general observation about Apple’s history, not a guarantee for this iPad or a basis for calculating its last update year.
Major iPadOS upgrades and security updates are different
A listing that includes the iPad 9 for a particular release establishes eligibility for that release only. It does not promise future major-version upgrades or a set period of security updates. Check the specific release and its eligible-model list rather than treating either type of update as a guaranteed schedule.

Apple’s security documentation says: “For our customers’ protection, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available.” This explains Apple’s policy on disclosing security issues; it does not state when the iPad 9 will stop receiving updates. The wording appears in Apple Support’s iPadOS 26.7 security document.

- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Review whether an update is offered for your device. Apple directs users to this screen to check for the latest software compatible with their model.
For later releases, consult Apple’s security releases listing as well; the device’s Software Update screen provides the check for that individual iPad.
