How to Check Whether Your Phone Supports Satellite Messaging and Emergency SOS

Check the exact feature, phone model, software, country and carrier—because emergency SOS by satellite and everyday satellite messaging are not the same thing. A phone that supports one may not support the other, and a supported model or country list does not guarantee a connection at your location.

First, identify the satellite feature you need

“Satellite messaging” can mean several different things. Before checking a device list, decide whether you need to contact emergency services, send routine messages to selected contacts, share your location, or use a carrier’s satellite-enabled apps. Check the manufacturer’s guidance and, where a carrier provides the service, its current eligibility information for the exact feature and country.

Feature What to verify
Emergency SOS by satellite Whether the handset, software and location support the emergency feature; check its availability separately from routine messaging.
Routine messages by satellite Whether the phone or carrier supports SMS, iMessage or another messaging service, and what message types are allowed.
Location sharing or satellite apps Which services and apps the manufacturer or carrier supports in your region.
Emergency voice calling Confirm explicitly that the provider supports it. Satellite messaging or SOS availability does not establish that voice calls are supported.

Check your phone’s exact model and software

Find the model name in the phone’s About settings, then compare it with the official requirements for the feature you want. Carrier lists may distinguish model variants or identify devices that are not yet available for service. Also check any required operating-system version, active SIM, default messaging app or network registration.

iPhone: Messages via satellite

Apple’s cited requirements say Messages via satellite needs an iPhone 14 or later (all models), an active SIM and supported software. Apple specifies iOS 18 or later in the US, Canada and Japan, and iOS 18.4 or later in Mexico. iMessage must be turned on before you leave mobile and Wi-Fi coverage. SMS by satellite depends on the network provider and may incur provider fees. See Apple’s Messages via satellite requirements.

When you are outside mobile and Wi-Fi coverage, open Settings and tap Satellite, or open Control Centre, tap Mobile Data, then Satellite, and choose Messages via satellite. If you still have mobile or Wi-Fi coverage, the Satellite option in Settings will not appear; Control Centre opens the Satellite Connection Demo instead. Messages can take longer to send over satellite, and photos, videos, audio messages, stickers and group messages are unavailable. Apple describes emergency SOS, roadside assistance, Find My and Messages as separate satellite features, with availability varying by service; confirm Emergency SOS requirements independently. Details are in Apple’s feature guidance.

Google Pixel: Satellite SOS

Google lists Satellite SOS for Pixel devices from Pixel 9 onward, except Pixel 9a. That is eligibility for emergency SOS, not a blanket guarantee of ordinary satellite texting. Google’s supported-country information includes the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, as well as supported European and other countries, and expressly warns: “The table doesn’t guarantee coverage.” Check Google’s Satellite SOS availability information for your location.

On the phone, go to Settings → Safety & emergency → Satellite SOS to check status or start the demo. Google says activation requires the necessary software and API updates and registration with the satellite network. Google Messages must be the default messaging app. A clear view of the sky is needed; trees, terrain, buildings and other conditions can block or delay a connection. See Google’s Pixel Satellite SOS setup guidance.

Check carrier-specific satellite messaging separately

A manufacturer’s phone capability does not automatically qualify the device for a carrier satellite service. Carriers can set their own eligible-device lists, regions, plans, supported apps and message limits. Check the carrier’s current page for your country and line, rather than assuming a phone listed by its manufacturer will work.

Examples of carrier differences

  • Verizon (US): Verizon lists selected Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models for its Satellite SOS and messaging service. Google Messages must be the default Android messaging app, and the phone needs line of sight to the satellite. Its cited FAQ says MMS, RCS and attachments are not supported; the service supports basic two-way text. Consult Verizon’s satellite messaging FAQ.
  • O2 Business: O2 publishes a separate list of selected iPhone, Samsung and Pixel models and supported apps. O2 Satellite supports messaging, location sharing and certain apps, but its FAQ says standard voice calls, including emergency calls, are not supported. See O2 Business Satellite information.
  • Rogers: Rogers maintains its own satellite-to-mobile device list and marks some models “Coming soon.” Check the current list and service terms at Rogers Satellite-to-Mobile.

Use this compatibility checklist

  1. Name the task: emergency SOS, routine SMS or iMessage, carrier satellite texting, location sharing, or app access.
  2. Identify the exact handset: find its model name in About settings and match the specific model or variant in the provider’s list.
  3. Check setup requirements: verify the operating-system version, active SIM if required, default messaging app and any network registration.
  4. Verify place and provider: check the manufacturer’s country information and the carrier’s device and coverage information. A supported-country or device list alone does not promise reception at a particular location.
  5. Try the official demo if available: Pixel’s Satellite SOS demo and Apple’s satellite connection demo can familiarize you with the interface. A demo is not proof that the service will connect in every place or circumstance.

What to do if your phone does not qualify

A standalone satellite communicator is a separate option if your phone cannot provide the satellite capability you need. Garmin describes the inReach Mini 2 as supporting two-way messages and interactive SOS over satellite networks; satellite features require an active subscription. It does not make an unsupported phone satellite-capable. See Garmin’s inReach Mini 2 announcement and Garmin’s subscription information.
