For your home Wi-Fi, use a unique passphrase at least 16 characters long. Choose randomly generated characters or several unrelated words. “Router password” can also mean the administrator password for router settings; give that a separate, unique password and change any factory default.
How long should my router password be?
For a Wi-Fi network using WPA2, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends a strong passphrase of at least 16 characters. Its 2024 guidance suggests either randomized mixed-case letters, numbers, and special characters or a memorable passphrase made from unrelated words, and says passwords should be unique. This is a practical target, not a guarantee against every attack or a promise that every router accepts every length or character. The cited guidance does not establish a universal maximum or character set for all router models and firmware. If setup rejects your passphrase, check the router’s manual or setup screen and use the longest strong, unique value it accepts.
Is the Wi-Fi password the same as the router admin password?
No. The Wi-Fi passphrase lets household devices join your wireless network. The administrator password controls access to the router’s settings. They protect different things, so use separate credentials. Change the administrator password if it is still set to the factory default; CISA’s home-router guidance calls for changing the default administrative password. Choose a password you can use reliably
Randomly generated characters
A password manager can generate and store a long random password, which avoids relying on a familiar phrase or reusing a password from another account. CISA recommends password managers as a way to create and remember strong, unique passwords; using one is optional. CISA’s password-manager training explains the approach.
Unrelated words
A passphrase made from unrelated words can be easier to enter and remember than a random string. CISA lists unrelated words as an option, including 5–7 words in its organizational security essentials guidance. Neither approach is universally best: choose one that is unique and that you and other authorized household members can enter accurately. If memorizing it is inconvenient, store it in a password manager rather than weakening it or reusing another password.
Set up the network securely

In the router’s wireless or Wi-Fi settings, select WPA2 or a newer security option if available. The CISA 2024 recommendation specifically discusses WPA2; a long password alone does not make an obsolete or insecure wireless configuration safe.

Set a unique Wi-Fi passphrase of at least 16 characters, using random characters or unrelated words.
