Keep your smartphone as long as it meets your needs, receives security updates, and remains practical to maintain. There is no universally right replacement age. Reassess when software support ends, a fault disrupts normal use, or repairs no longer make sense for the phone’s condition and remaining useful life. A worn battery alone may be fixable without replacing the phone.
What should determine when you replace a phone?
Use the phone’s condition and support status—not its age by itself—as your guide. Manufacturers set different update policies, and support can vary between models from the same brand. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) documented that variability in its 2018 report on repair restrictions; those findings are historical context, not a current schedule for any particular device.

- Security updates: Check the manufacturer’s support policy and end date for your exact model. When support ends, reassess your plans, particularly if you use the phone for sensitive accounts. The practical risk depends on how you use it, but an unsupported phone no longer receives the relevant security fixes from its manufacturer.
- Everyday performance and reliability: Consider whether the phone still handles the tasks you rely on and whether problems with the screen, camera, storage, connectivity, or other components interfere with normal use.
- Maintenance: Find out whether suitable parts and service are available, what they cost, and whether the device has enough software support left to make a repair worthwhile.
Is a worn battery a reason to replace the whole phone?
Not necessarily. Shorter runtime and unexpected shutdowns can be signs of battery aging. If the rest of the phone still works well, compare a battery service with the cost of replacing the device. Samsung’s Galaxy battery guidance recommends checking battery condition and considering replacement when aging symptoms appear. It applies to Galaxy phones; menu names and service details can vary by model and software version. For another brand, consult its manufacturer or an appropriate repair provider.
How to decide between keeping, repairing, and replacing
- Look up support for the exact model. Use the manufacturer’s security-update policy to establish whether the phone is supported and, if published, when support is expected to end. Don’t assume every model from one brand has the same schedule.
- Identify what is failing. Separate a battery problem from damage or faults affecting other essential components. A battery service may be enough if the rest of the phone remains useful.
- Get a realistic repair estimate. Check the cost and availability of parts and service. Whether a repair is practical can also depend on repair tools, instructions, software access, and the phone’s condition.
- Compare repair and replacement on the same terms. Weigh the full repair cost, remaining software support, condition of other components, and how well the phone meets your needs against the cost and usefulness of replacing it. There is no established universal repair-cost cutoff.
- Consider options besides disposal. Continued use, repair, refurbishment, or trade-in may be worth exploring before discarding a phone. The available evidence does not establish a particular provider, resale value, or environmental saving for an individual device.
The FTC’s repair report discusses restrictions involving parts, tools, instructions, and software. Those factors can affect whether a phone is practical to repair; the options depend on the model and market.

What do EU smartphone rules mean for useful life?
Some EU requirements apply to smartphones within the scope of the relevant ecodesign rules; they should not be treated as worldwide guarantees or as promises for every phone already in use. Under Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670, covered products must meet specified requirements, including battery endurance and update availability, and the rules include repair and spare-parts provisions.
- Battery endurance: The regulation sets a requirement of 800 charge-discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial battery capacity. This is a regulatory performance requirement for products within scope, not a prediction of an individual user’s battery life.
- Operating-system updates: For covered products, the regulation specifies at least five years of operating-system update availability measured from the date the last unit of a model is placed on the market, where the manufacturer provides the relevant updates. This is an EU rule with a defined scope, not a global minimum for all smartphones.
- Security, corrective, and functionality updates: The regulation says that, for covered products, if manufacturers, importers, or authorised representatives provide these operating-system updates, they must make them available at no cost for all units of a product model with the same operating system for at least five years after the end of placement on the market.
How long do people keep phones in practice?
The European Commission gives a modeled example in which increasing the average lifetime of a mid-range smartphone from 3.0 to 4.1 years would decrease annual sales for the same stock. The page does not state a publication date. This is an example used to illustrate a market effect, not a recommended personal replacement interval or a direct measure of every market’s current replacement cycle. Support information can also be hard to find. In a 2024 review, FTC staff found that 161 of 184 surveyed smart products did not disclose update duration or an end date on manufacturer webpages; follow-up searches did not find support information for 124 of those products. The sample covered varied smart products, not smartphones alone, so the figures describe a broader disclosure problem rather than smartphone-specific rates.
