Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a home network using WPA3 or WPA2/3, use a strong Wi-Fi passphrase of at least 20 characters—the National Security Agency’s specific recommendation for those settings. A memorable string of several words can make that length easier to manage, provided it is not based on obvious personal details or a familiar quotation.
Why the Wi-Fi recommendation is 20 characters
The NSA’s Best Practices for Securing Your Home Network, published February 22, 2023, says: “When configuring WPA3 or WPA2/3, use a strong passphrase with a minimum length of twenty characters.” That is the most directly relevant guidance for a home Wi-Fi password.

You may also see a 15-character minimum attributed to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. NIST’s consumer password guidance and SP 800-63B Revision 4 discuss account passwords: the standard’s 15-character minimum is for passwords used as a single-factor authentication mechanism by verifiers. It is not a Wi-Fi-specific recommendation, so it should not replace the NSA’s 20-character advice for WPA3 or WPA2/3.
How to make a long passphrase memorable
A passphrase made from multiple words can be easier to recall than a short string of mixed characters. Choose words in a combination an outsider would not readily guess. Avoid names, addresses, birthdays, household details, predictable sequences, and well-known quotations; these can be easier to guess than an original phrase.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Use a different passphrase from the router’s administrator password and from passwords for websites or other accounts. The Wi-Fi passphrase is shared with people and devices you allow onto the network; the administrator password controls access to router settings. Reusing a personal account password for either purpose needlessly links separate parts of your digital life.
Choose a security mode your router and devices support
WPA3 is the preferred mode when the router and household devices support it. The NSA recommends WPA3-capable equipment and permits WPA2/3 where older devices cannot use WPA3. The Federal Trade Commission likewise describes WPA3 as the newer, best encryption option and says WPA2 will also work. See the FTC’s guidance for securing a home Wi-Fi network.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Compatibility matters: a network mode is useful only if the devices that need access can connect to it. Check the router’s and each device’s documentation for supported security modes. The NSA also recommends protected management frames when available and a unique network name (SSID). These settings complement a strong passphrase; they do not change the 20-character recommendation.
Do you need a new router for WPA3?
Not necessarily. First check your router’s settings and documentation to see whether WPA3 is supported. If it supports WPA3, you can select it without replacing the router. If it does not, a WPA3-capable router is a possible upgrade, but confirm compatibility with the devices you use before deciding. A new router is not required simply to set a longer Wi-Fi passphrase.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What if the router rejects the passphrase?
Wi-Fi equipment may differ in which passphrase lengths or characters it accepts. The guidance cited here does not establish one universal character limit or character set for every WPA2 or WPA3 router and client. If setup rejects your phrase, check the router’s setup screen and model documentation for its requirements, then choose the longest strong passphrase it accepts while keeping the network in a supported security mode.

A long, unpredictable passphrase helps protect access to the wireless network, but it cannot prevent every way a network or its users might be compromised. It does not stop phishing or keystroke logging, and it cannot compensate for every insecure setting or unsupported device. NIST’s password-strength guidance notes that password length depends on the threat model and that length alone does not prevent phishing or keystroke logging. Its wireless LAN security guidance treats security as a lifecycle concern involving access points, client devices, and wireless switches—not just a password.
