No fund can be called one of India’s “top” growth-theme mutual funds on its name or investment objective alone. A credible ranking needs comparable, current evidence on holdings, costs, risk and returns—details that the scheme examples available here do not establish across themes. Use them to understand how a theme becomes a fund mandate, then check each scheme’s latest disclosures before investing.
What does a growth-themed mutual fund invest in?
SEBI describes thematic and sectoral mutual funds as funds focused on specific sectors, industries or themes. A sectoral fund concentrates on one sector; a thematic fund can hold companies from several sectors linked by a common idea. For example, an infrastructure theme might include businesses in more than one industry that could benefit from infrastructure development.

The theme is the scheme’s investment mandate, not a forecast that the underlying industries will grow or that their shares will deliver returns. SEBI notes that a theme performing well may offer higher-return potential, but thematic and sectoral funds carry greater risk because they are less diversified across industries. A sound economic story does not guarantee gains for fund investors.

What do the available scheme examples show?
Official scheme documents illustrate how managers can define different themes. They do not, by themselves, establish current performance, suitability or a ranking.
#1 Best Overall
| Scheme example | What its document describes | What the cited material does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Mahindra Manulife Build India Fund | The scheme information document hosted by SEBI describes an open-ended equity scheme following manufacturing and infrastructure themes. Its stated objective is long-term capital appreciation through predominant investment in equity and equity-related securities focused on companies and sectors that may benefit from those themes, including manufacturers and businesses exposed to infrastructure development and capital spending. | Whether it is a top performer, suitable for a particular investor, or how its current holdings, expenses and Riskometer compare with other schemes. Those details must be checked in current disclosures. |
| LIC MF Consumption Fund | A draft scheme information document hosted by SEBI describes an open-ended equity scheme following a consumption theme, with a stated long-term capital-appreciation objective and a benchmark reference to the Nifty India Consumption Total Return Index. | The draft does not establish final terms, launch status, live holdings or present availability. Do not treat it as confirmation that the scheme is currently open to investors. |
The Build India document also says, “There is no assurance that the investment objective of the Scheme will be achieved.” Its suitability language advises investors to consult financial advisers if they are unsure whether the product suits them. These are cautions, not evidence that a scheme will or will not perform well.
Why isn’t this a ranked list of the “top” funds?
A fair ranking requires like-for-like, up-to-date scheme data. The official materials described above provide examples of mandates, but do not give comparable current performance, holdings, expenses and risk information across manufacturing, infrastructure, consumption and other growth themes. Ranking schemes without those facts would turn a theme name or objective into an unsupported recommendation.

Even when you have comparable figures, choose an appropriate total-return benchmark and the same measurement periods for every fund. Compare returns after costs where the data permits, and remember that past performance does not promise future results. A ranking for one period can also conceal differences in concentration, drawdowns, fees or investment process.

Use the scheme’s latest official disclosures, rather than relying on its name or an older document. Compare funds on the same basis:
- Mandate: Check which companies and industries the scheme may invest in, and whether that exposure genuinely matches the theme you intend to access.
- Portfolio concentration: Review current sector allocations, largest holdings and issuer exposure. Check for overlap with funds you already own; adding another scheme may not add as much diversification as its label suggests.
- Risk: Read the scheme’s current Riskometer and, where applicable, the benchmark’s Riskometer. SEBI presents the Riskometer as a standardized indicator to help investors assess a scheme’s stated risk against their own risk appetite. Risk labels and exposures can change, so an older Riskometer is not a substitute for current disclosures.
- Performance: Compare the same periods against an appropriate total-return benchmark, using consistent data and accounting for costs where possible. Do not treat a strong period as proof of future returns.
- Cost and access: Check the current expense ratio, exit load, direct or regular plan, minimum investment and liquidity terms in official scheme documents. These details are not established comparably by the scheme examples above.
- Process and operations: Review the current fund manager, portfolio turnover, assets and whether the scheme’s objective and status remain current.
How should you interpret industry growth figures?
AMFI, with Crisil Intelligence, reported an 11.1% monthly recovery in India’s mutual-fund industry assets in April 2026. That is an industry-level change in assets, not the return of a thematic category, an individual scheme or an investor. It cannot be used to infer that a particular growth theme or fund will perform similarly.
