Measles is usually contagious from four days before the rash appears through four days after it begins. Count the first day of the rash as day 0: for a typical case, the general earliest return to school or work is day 5, after staying home for days 0 through 4. Follow your health department’s instructions and any case-specific advice, because people with severe immune compromise may need a longer isolation period.
How long is measles contagious?
A person with measles can generally spread it from four days before the rash starts until four days after rash onset, according to the CDC’s clinical overview. Because contagiousness begins before the rash, someone may transmit measles before they realize they have it.

Measles spreads through the air. The CDC says the virus can remain in the airspace for up to two hours after an infected person leaves, so avoiding direct contact alone does not make it safe to end isolation early. The CDC reports that up to 90% of close contacts who are not immune may become infected; that figure concerns close contacts, not every possible exposure. See How Measles Spreads.

When can someone with measles return to school or work?
For a typical case, stay home until the fifth day after the rash develops. The CDC’s public guidance says: “To prevent spreading measles, stay home until the fifth day after you develop the rash, and stay away from people at home who aren’t sick.” (Measles: What to Do If You Get Sick or Exposed, Aug. 5, 2026.)
#1 Best Overall
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- 3M COOL FLOW EXHALATION VALVE helps direct exhaled air downward and allows for easy breathing
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING. Compared to non-valved 3M 8200 Testing
- ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA for easy breathing
- ADJUSTABLE M-NOSECLIP helps provide a custom and secure seal
Rash onset is day 0, not day 1. Complete days 1, 2, 3, and 4 at home; day 5 is the general earliest return point. For example, if the rash first appears on Monday, Monday is day 0, Friday is day 4, and Saturday is day 5. This is the general U.S. CDC timing, not permission to disregard directions from your local health department, clinician, school, or employer.
Who may need to isolate longer?
People with severe immune compromise may remain infectious longer, and some may not develop the usual rash. The standard day-5 return point may not apply. Their treating clinician and public-health authorities should determine how long to isolate and when it is appropriate to return, as described in the CDC clinical overview.

What to do if measles is suspected
- Stay home and call before seeking care. Contact your healthcare provider or hospital first, explain that measles is suspected, and follow their instructions so they can arrange evaluation while limiting exposure to others. The CDC gives this advice in its guidance for people who are sick or exposed.
- Follow the isolation timing. If measles is diagnosed or suspected, use the rash-onset day as day 0 and follow the health department’s instructions. Do not use feeling better or another personal milestone to shorten the time-based isolation period.
- Coordinate the return. Follow any directions from public-health authorities and the relevant school or employer process. The CDC’s surveillance guidance discusses case isolation and measures for school or institutional contacts.
If you were exposed but do not have measles
Exposure alone is not the same as having measles, and an exposed person should not automatically use an infected person’s return timeline. Contact a healthcare provider promptly. Whether you are immune, need post-exposure measures, or should stay away from school or work depends on your circumstances and public-health instructions. The CDC’s sick-or-exposed guidance and surveillance manual cover these decisions.
Which guidance applies?
The timing above reflects U.S. CDC recommendations. Health departments issue case-specific instructions, and school or employer processes may affect how a return is handled. If those instructions differ from the general timing, follow the applicable public-health and medical advice.
