In the United States, automated license plate reader (ALPR) data has no single nationwide storage deadline. Retention depends on the state law, agency policy and system involved, and records preserved for an investigation or legal process may be kept beyond the routine deletion period. Access is also restricted differently by jurisdiction and agency; the examples below are specific rules and practices, not a rule for every police department.
How long ALPR data is stored
ALPR systems capture plate reads, often with associated time and location information. A retention limit may come from a statute, an agency policy, or a vendor’s system configuration. Those limits are not interchangeable: a vendor setting does not establish the law for every agency, and an agency may have a shorter applicable limit. These current examples show why the state, agency, and system all matter.

These figures are not a national range from which an individual department’s deadline can be inferred. The governing rule for a particular record depends on the relevant jurisdiction and system, as well as whether it was preserved under an exception.

Who can access or receive ALPR data
Being stored in a police system does not mean every officer can search the data, that every agency can receive it, or that the public can obtain it. Rules may limit access by role, training, purpose, and the receiving agency.

- North Carolina: The statute restricts use and disclosure to law-enforcement purposes and bars use of covered data to enforce traffic violations. Disclosure is limited to specified criminal justice officials for a legitimate law-enforcement purpose on written request. Sale of the data is prohibited.
- Illinois State Police: ISP says access to its Vehicle Manager platform is limited to law-enforcement personnel who have completed training. It says sharing is limited to other law-enforcement entities for law-enforcement or public-safety functions, with written consent or a memorandum of understanding.
- NCRIC: Its policy requires audit logging and reporting. The specified audit information includes the user’s name, agency, access date and time, queried plate, and valid case number.
Purpose restrictions can also be agency-specific. For example, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department transparency page says its privacy policy was updated April 22, 2026, describes authorized public-safety uses, and prohibits using ALPR data for civil immigration enforcement. That statement concerns LASD’s policy; it does not establish the rules for other agencies or provide a retention period.
Are ALPR records public records?
Do not assume raw plate reads are publicly accessible simply because a government agency holds them. North Carolina law treats covered captured plate data as confidential and not a public record. Illinois State Police says its ALPR data is not subject to disclosure under FOIA. These statements apply to the data and jurisdictions identified, not automatically to every ALPR record nationwide.

Policies, contracts, audit reports, oversight documents, and aggregate information may be treated differently from raw ALPR data. Whether a particular document can be disclosed depends on the applicable law and agency; the examples here do not establish a universal public-records rule for those materials.

- Identify the jurisdiction and custodian. Start with the state and the agency that operates the reader or holds the data. If the camera is part of a regional or shared system, identify that system too.
- Check the current state statute and agency ALPR policy. Look for sections on ordinary retention, deletion, investigations, preservation requests, warrants or court orders, and any purpose-specific exception. Confirm the policy version and effective date.
- Check system and sharing terms. Determine whether a vendor setting or a participating agency’s policy imposes a shorter limit, and which agencies may query or receive data.
- Look for oversight and disclosure rules. Review the provisions on authorized users, audit logs, sharing, public records, and records preserved for a case. If you seek records, distinguish raw plate data from related policies, agreements, and audit or oversight materials; each may have different disclosure treatment.
Without the location and agency, the exact deadline and access rules for a reader’s own ALPR data cannot be determined from these examples.
