The Norwegian Nobel Committee is the exception: it both evaluates candidates and selects the Peace Prize laureate.
How Nobel Prize selection works
- Qualified nominators are invited or authorized to submit candidates. Committees send invitations each September to people eligible under category-specific rules. Depending on the prize, nominators may include academy members, university professors, researchers and previous laureates. The Peace Prize has a wider pool of eligible nominators who may submit nominations without an invitation; nomination rules vary by category. Nobel Prize’s nomination overview explains the process.
- Nominations arrive for the coming year. The 2025 Nobel Week media guide gives January 31 as the deadline for nominations. The Nobel Foundation statutes describe the annual adjudication period as covering nominations received during the preceding twelve months up to February 1. These are different formulations of the operational deadline and the statutes’ annual period, not a reason to assume every category has identical procedures. The 2025 media guide sets out that year’s schedule.
- Committees verify nominations and narrow the field. They check that nominators are entitled to nominate, compile valid submissions and reduce the candidate pool through successive stages. A nomination applies to that year only; the same person may be nominated by multiple people or in different years. A nomination is not a public vote or a published score.
- Experts help assess the remaining candidates. Committees study candidates in depth, drawing on domestic and foreign experts. Specific arrangements differ by prize, but the general sequence is committee assessment followed by recommendations.
- The proper awarding body makes the decision. For most prizes, the relevant prize-awarding institution makes the final choice. The Peace Prize is different: the Norwegian Nobel Committee assesses nominees and selects the recipient itself.
- Laureates are announced publicly. For the 2025 awards, evaluation ran from February to early October, and laureates were notified before press conferences in early October. Those dates describe the 2025 schedule, not a guaranteed timetable for every year.
Which institution selects each Nobel laureate?
The committees that assess candidates are not interchangeable with the bodies that make the final selection. The responsible institution depends on the prize.

| Prize | Final selecting body | How the process differs |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences | The Academy’s prize statutes describe committee proposals, comments from the relevant class and an Academy decision. |
| Chemistry | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences | Committee assessment and recommendations feed into the Academy’s decision. |
| Economic Sciences | Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences | The Academy selects the laureates; Sveriges Riksbank funds the prize. |
| Physiology or Medicine | Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet | The Assembly, rather than the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, makes the selection. |
| Literature | Swedish Academy | The Swedish Academy makes the selection. |
| Peace | Norwegian Nobel Committee | The committee both assesses candidates and makes the final selection. |
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ prize statutes describe the decision procedure for its prizes. Institutional roles and the broader nomination process are also summarized in the Nobel Foundation Annual Review 2024.
Economic Sciences is an associated prize, not one of the original five
The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is awarded at the same ceremony as the other prizes, but it was established by Sveriges Riksbank in 1968. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences selects its laureates, and Sveriges Riksbank funds the prize. It is not one of the five prizes specified in Alfred Nobel’s will.

What nomination does—and does not—mean
- You cannot nominate yourself. Section 7 of the Nobel Foundation statutes states: “A personal application for an award shall not be considered.” See the Nobel Foundation statutes.
- A nomination is confidential, not an announcement. Nominee identities are kept secret for 50 years, according to Nobel Prize Outreach’s nomination overview. Alleged lists of current nominees are therefore unverified; a nomination does not confirm that someone is under public consideration.
- More nominations do not establish a candidate’s odds. Multiple nominations do not create a public vote or published score. Committees assess candidates through a process that includes expert review.
- A committee recommendation is not always the final decision. For most prizes, the awarding institution chooses the laureate; the Norwegian Nobel Committee itself selects the Peace Prize recipient.
How the timetable and committee structures vary
The broad stages are similar, but category rules, committees and awarding bodies differ. In the 2025 schedule, invitations went out in September, the media guide listed January 31 as the nomination deadline, evaluation ran from February to early October, and announcements followed in early October. Check the relevant year’s official information for current dates rather than treating one year’s calendar as permanent.
Committee sizes and institutional memberships are not measures of selection probability. The Nobel Foundation’s 2026 statutes prescribe three to five members for committees appointed by Swedish prize-awarding bodies; the Norwegian Nobel Committee has five members. The Foundation’s 2024 annual review reports about 450 Swedish and about 175 foreign members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 50 members of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, and 18 members of the Swedish Academy. Those figures describe institutional composition, not a nominee’s chance of winning.
