Apple does not give a standard number of minutes for installing iOS 27. Total time varies: download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed, while installation time depends on the update’s size and the iPhone’s available storage. Downloading, preparing and installing are separate stages, so the installation screen is only part of the wait.
What determines the total update time?
Apple’s update process has four stages: the iPhone detects an update, downloads it, prepares it, and installs it. Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed; installation time depends on update size and available device storage. It does not publish a typical total time, an iOS 27 package size, or a duration by iPhone model, so a precise estimate would be guesswork. Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance explains the timing factors, and its update-process overview describes the stages.

- Download: A slow or shared internet connection can extend this stage. Apple recommends Wi-Fi and avoiding other downloads.
- Preparation and installation: Update size and the iPhone’s available storage affect the wait. Too little storage can also prevent an update from completing.
- Compatibility and availability: Only updates compatible with the device appear. In some cases, an earlier iOS version may need to be installed first. Apple’s iOS 27 download instructions cover compatibility and installation.
- Connection or server problems: Internet connectivity issues or trouble reaching the update server can interrupt a wireless update. Apple lists these among update problems.
How to start the update
Before updating, check that the iPhone is compatible and back it up. Apple recommends connecting to power and Wi-Fi for a wireless update. The exact update offered depends on the device and current availability.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- If iOS 27 is available, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.
- If the update has already downloaded, choose Update Now or Update Tonight when offered.
Apple says you can continue using the iPhone while the update downloads; it will notify you when the update is ready to install. Wireless updates use an incremental download of the components needed for the update, but that efficiency does not establish a fixed duration. See Apple’s iOS 27 instructions and its general update instructions.

What to do if the update seems stuck
First check which stage is taking time. A slow download and a paused installation have different likely causes, and Apple does not set a number of minutes after which a pause is considered abnormal.
If the download is slow
- Connect to Wi-Fi and avoid downloading other content at the same time.
- Remember that the iPhone can still be used during the download; wait for its notification that installation is ready.
- If the wireless download repeatedly fails, retry on the same network, then try another network.
If installation is slow or incomplete
- Check the progress displayed on the iPhone and keep it connected to power.
- Check available storage if the update will not complete.
- If wireless attempts continue to fail, update using a supported Mac or a Windows PC. Apple says a computer downloads a full copy of iOS or iPadOS, unlike the incremental wireless update.
To remove a downloaded update before trying again, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, select the downloaded update, tap Delete Update, then return to Settings > General > Software Update to download it again. Apple’s troubleshooting article also directs users to recovery-mode guidance if a computer does not recognize the iPhone or the Apple logo remains for several minutes without a progress bar. Follow Apple’s troubleshooting steps for those cases.

Wireless update or computer?
A wireless update is the usual route when the update appears in Software Update and the iPhone can connect reliably. A connected computer is an alternative if the update does not appear or wireless attempts keep failing. Apple says to use Finder on supported Macs, or iTunes on older Macs and Windows PCs. The computer route downloads a full copy of the operating system; Apple does not say this guarantees a faster update. See Apple’s device-update instructions.
