Cannabis-related anxiety usually eases as intoxication wears off, but there is no guaranteed end time. A 2025 clinical review gives typical adverse-effect durations of 3–5 hours after inhaling cannabis and 8–12 hours after taking it orally. These are estimates, not deadlines. Edibles may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to begin affecting you and can last longer than expected. Call 911 for difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, or a seizure; if the person is responsive but may have consumed too much, contact poison control for guidance.
How long can cannabis-induced anxiety last?
Anxiety, panic, or paranoia can occur while someone is acutely intoxicated by cannabis. These reactions can be frightening, but their presence alone does not establish a psychiatric diagnosis. The CDC lists anxiety and paranoia among possible unpleasant effects of cannabis.

The best available general time estimates depend on how the cannabis was taken. A 2025 clinical review says acute adverse effects are expected to subside within 3–5 hours after inhalation and 8–12 hours after oral intake. Those ranges describe typical expectations, not a promise that anxiety will stop at a particular hour or a rule for deciding that someone is safe. Individual experiences vary, and oral products can have a delayed, prolonged course.

Why the route of use changes the timeline
| How cannabis was taken | Typical timing described by the sources | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Inhaled, such as smoked or vaped cannabis | A 2025 clinical review gives 3–5 hours for adverse effects to subside after inhalation. | This is an estimate, not an exact cutoff for an individual. |
| Oral, such as an edible or cannabis drink | The 2025 clinical review gives 8–12 hours for adverse effects after oral intake. The CDC says effects may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to appear. | Effects may be delayed and last longer than expected. A lack of early effects does not show that the eventual experience will be mild. |
The route difference matters because inhaled cannabis tends to have a shorter acute adverse-effect window than cannabis swallowed in food or drink. The route-specific ranges come from the 2025 clinical review, “Cannabis-Associated Emergencies in the Emergency Department”. They are clinical estimates; they should not be treated as a countdown or as a guarantee of recovery by a fixed time.
Why an edible can cause anxiety later
With an edible, the intoxicating effects may not be noticeable for 30 minutes to 2 hours. According to the CDC’s cannabis poisoning guidance, effects can also last longer than expected. This delay can make it hard to judge how strongly a product will affect someone based on the first few minutes after eating it.
The CDC identifies several factors that can affect the experience: the amount consumed, an empty stomach, use of medication or alcohol, and uncertainty about the product’s strength. Since onset and duration vary, do not interpret “I don’t feel it yet” as evidence that taking more is safe. A person who has already consumed more than intended should get case-specific advice from poison control instead of trying to calculate a safe amount.

Poison Control’s consumer overview likewise describes inhaled effects as beginning within minutes and swallowed effects as more delayed and longer lasting, with substantial variability. NHS inform’s cannabis overview, updated July 13, 2026, also notes that eating cannabis leads to more delayed onset and longer duration than inhaling it.

When to call emergency services
Call 911 immediately if the person has difficulty breathing, is unresponsive, or has a seizure. America’s Poison Centers identifies these as emergency warning signs for edible cannabis poisoning. Do not wait to see whether anxiety passes when one of these signs is present.
The CDC lists other signs that someone may have used too much cannabis: extreme confusion, anxiety, paranoia, panic, a fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, and severe nausea or vomiting. These symptoms warrant taking the situation seriously. Follow local emergency guidance and poison-control advice to decide what help is needed; the list is not a substitute for emergency assessment when someone appears seriously unwell.
Who to contact when the person is responsive
If someone may have consumed too much cannabis but is responsive and breathing, contact poison control for specific guidance rather than guessing about the level of risk or relying on a product remedy. In the United States, the Poison Help number is 1-800-222-1222. The CDC directs people with questions about possible cannabis poisoning to a healthcare provider or poison control and advises calling 911 in an emergency; America’s Poison Centers gives the same Poison Help number.
Poison-control numbers and emergency arrangements are geography-specific. The number above is for the United States. If you are elsewhere, use your local poison-information service or emergency number.

What to do when the anxiety is distressing but not an emergency
- Check for emergency signs first. Difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, or a seizure means call 911 immediately.
- Note what was taken and when, if known. Whether the cannabis was inhaled or swallowed is relevant because expected timing differs. For an edible, remember that effects may begin as late as 2 hours after ingestion and can last longer than expected.
- Contact poison control if too much may have been consumed. Give them the information you have and follow their individualized instructions. In the United States, call 1-800-222-1222.
- Seek healthcare advice for ongoing, worsening, or significantly distressing symptoms. The typical duration ranges cannot determine by themselves whether an individual needs evaluation.
How to interpret the symptoms and time estimates
Anxiety or paranoia during cannabis intoxication is a possible unpleasant effect, not by itself proof of a mental-health disorder. At the same time, symptoms such as extreme confusion, panic, a fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, and severe nausea or vomiting are among the CDC’s signs of using too much cannabis. The distinction is practical: do not diagnose from a symptom, and do not dismiss a concerning reaction just because anxiety can occur with intoxication.
Use the 3–5-hour inhalation and 8–12-hour oral-intake ranges as general context only. They come from a 2025 clinical review and refer to expected adverse-effect duration. The separate 30-minute-to-2-hour edible onset range is CDC guidance. Onset, intensity, and duration are not interchangeable: an edible may take time to be felt, then continue to affect someone longer than expected. None of these figures establishes an exact safe waiting period or a point at which a person is guaranteed to feel well.
What the estimates can—and cannot—tell you
The 3–5-hour and 8–12-hour estimates answer a general timing question, not the more specific question of what will happen to one person. They describe typical adverse-effect duration by route in a 2025 clinical review. They do not tell you the exact moment anxiety will stop, whether a person is safe to be left without care, or whether symptoms that persist are harmless. The CDC’s edible onset range addresses a different part of the timeline: effects may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to appear. A delayed start and a longer-lasting effect can occur in the same experience.

That distinction is especially useful when someone has eaten cannabis and is anxious before the full effect is clear. The absence of an effect in the first few minutes does not mean the product will not affect them, and the timing ranges are not a reason to take more or to postpone calling for advice. Amount consumed, an empty stomach, medication or alcohol use, and uncertain product strength can all affect the experience, according to CDC guidance. If there is concern that too much was taken, poison control can give advice based on the situation rather than a general time estimate.

The symptom lists also serve different purposes. Anxiety or paranoia can be unpleasant effects of intoxication, while the CDC includes extreme confusion, panic, fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, and severe nausea or vomiting among signs of using too much. Those signs do not make a diagnosis on their own, but they should not be brushed aside. Breathing difficulty, unresponsiveness, and seizure are clearer emergency triggers: America’s Poison Centers says to call 911 immediately for these signs.
Guidance is location-specific at the point of contact. The U.S. Poison Help number is 1-800-222-1222; outside the United States, use the local poison-information service or emergency number. CDC’s cannabis poisoning page was updated and reviewed February 15, 2024, and the clinical review providing the route-specific estimates was published in 2025. Treat the figures as useful context, not a substitute for poison-control or healthcare advice when symptoms are severe, persistent, worsening, or significantly distressing.

How long will this panic last after smoking weed?
A 2025 clinical review gives 3–5 hours as the typical period for acute adverse effects to subside after inhalation. That is an estimate, not a promise or a cutoff that proves someone is safe. Anxiety, panic, and paranoia can occur during intoxication. If symptoms worsen, persist, or cause significant distress, contact a healthcare professional or poison control for individualized advice. Call 911 for difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, or seizure.
Can an edible cause anxiety hours later?
Yes. The CDC says edible effects may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to appear, and they may last longer than expected. A 2025 clinical review gives 8–12 hours as a typical adverse-effect duration after oral intake. The delayed onset means someone may not feel the full effect right away. Do not take a lack of early effects as evidence that taking more is safe; if too much may have been consumed, contact poison control.
Best Value
What can make cannabis anxiety last longer or feel stronger?
There is no single timeline for everyone. The CDC identifies the amount consumed, an empty stomach, use of medication or alcohol, and uncertainty about product strength as factors that can affect an edible experience. Route matters too: the clinical review gives a longer typical adverse-effect window for oral intake than for inhalation. These factors do not let a person calculate exactly when anxiety will end, so use poison-control or healthcare advice if the situation is concerning.
When is cannabis anxiety an emergency?
America’s Poison Centers advises calling 911 immediately if the person has difficulty breathing, is unresponsive, or has a seizure. The CDC also lists extreme confusion, anxiety, paranoia, panic, fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, and severe nausea or vomiting as signs of using too much cannabis. Follow local emergency guidance and poison-control advice if the person appears seriously unwell.
What if the anxiety has not gone away after the typical time range?
The 3–5-hour inhalation and 8–12-hour oral-intake ranges are general estimates, not guaranteed deadlines. The reviewed sources do not define a universal number of hours after which anxiety alone always requires medical evaluation. Contact a healthcare professional or poison control if symptoms are ongoing, worsening, or significantly distressing, and call 911 for breathing difficulty, unresponsiveness, or seizure.
