What Happens When a Sun-Like Star Runs Out of Fuel?

When a Sun-like star exhausts the hydrogen in its core, it does not suddenly go dark. The core contracts and heats, the outer layers swell into a red giant, and helium later fuses into carbon. The star eventually sheds those outer layers as an expanding planetary nebula, leaving a roughly Earth-sized white dwarf that cools for billions of years.

The direct answer: fuel exhaustion starts a transformation

A Sun-like star’s “fuel” is not all of its hydrogen disappearing at once. The decisive event is the depletion of hydrogen in the core, where the star currently produces energy by nuclear fusion. During the main-sequence stage, hydrogen nuclei combine to make helium. The released energy heats the star and supplies pressure that counteracts the inward pull of gravity.

As usable core hydrogen runs low, fusion can no longer provide the same support in that central region. Gravity compresses the core. Compression raises its temperature and pressure, while hydrogen fusion continues in a shell around the contracting core. The added energy causes the star’s outer layers to expand dramatically. Its surface becomes cooler in appearance even as the interior grows hotter, and the star enters its red-giant stage. NASA describes the Sun as roughly midway through its main-sequence lifetime today. For a star with approximately the Sun’s mass, the later path is comparatively gentle: helium fuses into carbon, the swollen envelope is expelled, and the exposed core becomes a white dwarf. It does not become a supernova or a black hole.

How the Sun-like sequence unfolds

1. Main sequence: hydrogen fusion balances gravity

The Sun is currently a main-sequence star. In its core, hydrogen fusion releases energy that moves outward and eventually escapes as sunlight. That energy creates pressure, maintaining a long-lived balance with gravity. The balance is not permanent because the core’s hydrogen supply is finite.

The helium produced by fusion accumulates in the core. Over time, the central composition changes from hydrogen-rich to helium-rich, leaving less hydrogen available for the reactions that power the main-sequence star.

2. Core hydrogen depletion: contraction and heating

When the core’s hydrogen is substantially depleted, the central region loses part of its fusion support. The core contracts under gravity rather than simply switching off. Gravitational compression converts into heat, raising the core’s temperature and pressure.

This contraction also changes where fusion occurs. Hydrogen burning shifts into layers surrounding the helium-rich core. The shell can produce substantial energy, and that energy pushes the star’s envelope outward.

3. Red giant: an expanded, cooler-looking surface

The outer layers expand to many times their previous size. Because the enlarged surface radiates energy over a much larger area, its surface temperature falls and the star appears redder. The object is now a red giant: its name describes its swollen size and redder surface, not a new kind of fuel.

NASA’s star-types explanation places the Sun’s red-giant transition at about five billion years from now. A 2019 NASA article gives a similar starting estimate and says the red-giant phase lasts about a billion years. These are rounded educational estimates, not a calendar prediction for a particular day or year. NASA Science: Types of stars NASA, “Why the Sun Won’t Become a Black Hole”

4. Helium fusion: making carbon in the core

As the contracting core becomes hot and dense enough, helium nuclei begin to fuse. In NASA’s description of lower-mass stars, this stage converts helium into carbon in the core, while hydrogen fusion continues in a surrounding shell. The star is therefore not using one fuel in one place: different layers can be undergoing different fusion reactions at the same time.

Helium burning is a later, shorter chapter than the Sun’s long hydrogen-burning main-sequence life. Its presence does not turn the star into a massive-star supernova candidate; the star’s initial mass still determines how far nuclear burning can proceed.

5. Envelope loss: a planetary nebula forms

A Sun-like star cannot keep its expanded outer atmosphere indefinitely. Pulsations and stellar winds help remove material. Eventually, much of the envelope drifts away and becomes an expanding cloud of gas and dust around the remaining core.

Astronomers call this cloud a planetary nebula. The name comes from the disk-like appearance some of these objects had through early telescopes; planets do not create the nebula, and the cloud is not a newly forming planetary system. NASA describes the expelled material as the star’s outer layers blown into space. NASA’s overview of stellar evolution

6. White dwarf: the exposed stellar remnant

After the envelope is gone, the leftover core is a white dwarf. NASA characterizes it as a roughly Earth-sized stellar cinder. It is extremely compact compared with the original giant, but it no longer sustains hydrogen fusion like a main-sequence star.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A white dwarf shines because it retains stored heat from its earlier stellar life. It does not produce a continuing supply of fusion energy of its own. Over billions of years, it gradually cools and fades. NASA’s educational explanation and star-types page both describe this cooling-remnant stage. How long until each stage?

All dates for the Sun’s future are approximate. NASA pages use different rounded ways of describing the same billion-year-scale evolution, so the estimates should not be combined into a more precise number than either source supports.

Milestone Approximate estimate Source and qualification
Beginning of core-hydrogen depletion and red-giant transition About 5 billion years from now NASA’s September 26, 2019 article; an educational estimate, not an exact date
Duration of the red-giant phase About 1 billion years NASA’s 2019 article; rounded duration
White-dwarf outcome About 6 billion years in the 2019 article’s framing NASA’s 2019 article; approximate elapsed timing
White-dwarf outcome About 10 billion years from now NASA Science’s “Types” page, accessed October 13, 2026; a separate rounded summary

The differing white-dwarf figures reflect the broad way public NASA summaries round the sequence and its durations. They do not indicate that the Sun’s endpoint is uncertain in kind: both sources describe a white dwarf, not a supernova remnant or black hole.

What happens to Earth?

During the red-giant expansion, the Sun’s atmosphere is expected to grow far enough to engulf Earth, according to NASA’s 2019 explanation. The same source says Earth would become uninhabitable for life as we know it and cautions that other factors in planetary evolution could make conditions lethal earlier. The five-billion-year estimate therefore marks a broad evolutionary milestone, not the first moment at which Earth’s surface becomes dangerous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant physical change is the Sun’s expanding, increasingly luminous outer envelope during its giant phase. After the envelope is lost, the remaining white dwarf is far smaller than the red giant. The planetary nebula is made from material the star has shed; it is not a replacement atmosphere for Earth or a new solar system.

Why mass changes the ending

“Sun-like” is an evolutionary category, not a claim that every star follows exactly the same timetable. Initial mass affects how quickly a star consumes fuel and whether it can ignite fusion reactions beyond helium. Composition, mass loss and binary interactions can also alter details, so the thresholds below are broad explanatory ranges from NASA rather than sharp universal boundaries.

Broad stellar category Fusion path after core hydrogen Typical endpoint described by NASA
Sun-like or lower-mass star Core contraction, hydrogen-shell burning, red-giant expansion, then helium-to-carbon fusion Outer layers form a planetary nebula; the core becomes a white dwarf
Stars below roughly 8 solar masses in NASA’s red-giant description Do not proceed through the full sequence of increasingly heavy-element fusion seen in massive stars Envelope loss and a white-dwarf core
About 8 to 20 solar masses Can continue through additional fusion stages before core collapse Supernova with a neutron-star remnant in NASA’s broad summary
More massive stars Can fuse progressively heavier elements toward iron before core collapse Supernova and, in some cases, a black-hole remnant

The massive-star route is not the Sun’s route. NASA’s general overview contrasts low-mass stars that lose their envelopes and leave white dwarfs with high-mass stars that undergo core collapse and a supernova. NASA’s overview of stars NASA Imagine the Universe!: Stellar evolution

Will the Sun become a black hole?

No. NASA’s direct answer is: “Will the Sun become a black hole? No, it’s too small for that!” Its 2019 article explains that the Sun would need to be roughly 20 times more massive to follow a black-hole-producing pathway. That number is an explanatory comparison in that NASA article, not a universal boundary that overrides composition, mass loss or binary evolution in every stellar system. Read NASA’s full explanation

The Sun also will not explode as a supernova. Its mass is sufficient for the red-giant, helium-burning and white-dwarf sequence, but not for the successive heavy-element burning and core collapse associated with massive stars.

What “runs out of fuel” really means

  • It means core hydrogen is depleted: the triggering shortage occurs where the main-sequence fusion reactions happen.
  • It does not mean all hydrogen vanishes: hydrogen remains in outer layers and can continue fusing in a shell around the contracting helium-rich core.
  • Fusion does not stop everywhere at once: the star changes its internal structure and later begins helium fusion in the core.
  • The final remnant is not still a normal star: the white dwarf has no sustained hydrogen-burning core and cools from stored heat.

A compact mental model

  1. Hydrogen-burning balance: fusion pressure and gravity hold the main-sequence Sun in equilibrium.
  2. Central depletion: helium accumulates and core hydrogen becomes scarce.
  3. Compression: the core contracts and heats; hydrogen burns in a surrounding shell.
  4. Expansion: the outer envelope swells and the Sun becomes a red giant.
  5. Helium burning: the hot core fuses helium into carbon.
  6. Shedding: the envelope escapes as an expanding planetary nebula.
  7. Cooling: the exposed core becomes a white dwarf and cools over billions of years.

NASA’s annotated life-cycle illustration emphasizes that the ages, sizes and colors shown for a Sun-like star are approximate and not drawn to scale. NASA’s annotated life-cycle resource
