An 8,000mAh phone battery does not have one fixed charging time. Its capacity alone is not enough to calculate how long a full charge will take: you also need the battery’s voltage and the average power the phone actually accepts during charging. As an illustration, an 8,000mAh battery at a nominal 3.85V stores about 30.8Wh. If an average 10W reached the battery throughout the session, the idealized calculation would be about 3.1 hours; at 20W, about 1.5 hours. These are arithmetic examples, not measured or guaranteed full-charge times. Real charging usually takes longer because power at the wall adapter is not necessarily the power reaching the battery, charging speed changes as the battery fills, and use or temperature can affect the session.
Why 8,000mAh does not give an exact charging time
The mAh rating describes a battery’s capacity as electric charge. It does not, by itself, say how much energy the battery stores or how quickly a phone can put that energy back in. To estimate stored energy, capacity must be considered with nominal battery voltage. To estimate elapsed time, that energy must then be compared with the average power reaching the battery—not simply the largest wattage printed on a charger.

That distinction matters because a phone, charger and cable work as a system. The phone has its own supported charging modes and may accept less power than the adapter can provide. The accepted power can also vary during one charging session. A charger’s wattage is a capability, not a promise that the battery will receive that many watts continuously.

How to estimate the charging time
Convert the capacity and estimate the energy
-
Convert milliamp-hours to amp-hours: 8,000mAh ÷ 1,000 = 8Ah.
-
Multiply amp-hours by the battery’s nominal voltage to estimate energy in watt-hours: Wh = Ah × V. For the illustrative 3.85V value, 8Ah × 3.85V = 30.8Wh.
-
Divide the energy to be added by the average power reaching the battery: hours ≈ Wh ÷ average battery-side watts.

The 3.85V value is an example, not a claim that every 8,000mAh battery uses that voltage. A different battery voltage produces a different energy estimate. And a top-up from a partly charged battery involves adding less energy than a charge from empty.
What the illustrative calculations mean
| Illustrative average power at the battery | Calculation for 30.8Wh | Idealized time |
|---|---|---|
| 10W | 30.8Wh ÷ 10W | About 3.1 hours |
| 20W | 30.8Wh ÷ 20W | About 1.5 hours |
These results assume a constant average power at the battery for the entire interval. They are not manufacturer test results. Actual elapsed time can be longer because the wall adapter’s output and battery-side power are not interchangeable, the phone may not sustain the assumed average, and charging behavior changes over the session. The calculation is useful for understanding how power affects time; it is not a substitute for a model-specific charging test.

Why a higher-wattage charger may not make this phone faster
The phone determines which charging mode it can use and how much power it requests. USB Power Delivery is a negotiated system: a device can request the power it requires rather than automatically drawing the adapter’s maximum. USB-IF announced that Revision 3.1 supports up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C connection. That is a standards ceiling, not an estimate of phone charging speed, and it does not mean an unspecified phone can accept 240W.
Huawei’s charging guidance describes its own categories as standard charging at 5–10W, fast charging at 18–20W, and SuperCharge at 22.5W or higher. These are Huawei category descriptions, not universal industry definitions or guaranteed battery-side averages. Huawei also specifies that the device must support the fast-charging protocol and that the charger and data cable must support the power used during fast charging.

If the phone does not negotiate that mode, it may charge at a lower rate despite the adapter’s headline rating. Motorola likewise advises using a compatible charger and notes that an unsuitable charger can charge slowly or affect performance. Check the exact phone model’s charging specifications rather than choosing an adapter by wattage alone.
What changes the time during a charging session
Charging slows as the battery fills
A calculation that assumes one steady power level is especially rough for a full charge because charging power can change as the battery’s charge level rises. Sony documents this behavior for an applicable Xperia model: it says charging current is gradually reduced when the battery reaches 50% to protect the battery, so charging becomes slower. That 50% point is a model-specific example; it is not a universal threshold for all phones.
This is one reason a partial-charge result cannot be directly extended to a full-charge time. A phone may add charge at one pace earlier in the session and at a slower pace later. A reported interval such as “0% to 50%” also describes only that tested portion, not the time needed to continue from 50% to full.

Temperature, device use and battery age
Google’s Pixel battery guidance identifies usage during charging, battery age and ambient temperature as factors in charging speed. Sony also notes that background operation can affect speed and that using the device while charging can slow charging because of heat control. Keeping the screen and demanding activity off during a test can therefore make the result differ from an ordinary session in which the phone is in use.

Motorola says not to charge its phone at temperatures below -20°C or above 45°C; those are Motorola safety limits, not a universal operating range for every phone. Follow the temperature guidance for the particular device rather than applying another manufacturer’s limits to it.
Starting charge and test conditions
A charge from empty to full adds more energy than a top-up from, for example, a half-charged battery, so the two intervals should not be compared as if they measured the same task. Google’s published Pixel charging tests specify starting levels and charger and device conditions, and warn that results may be slower in actual use. Different models and test setups are not a single universal benchmark for 8,000mAh batteries.

-
Identify the exact phone model. Find its official charging specifications and check the maximum wired input and supported charging protocol. Capacity alone does not reveal either value.
-
Check the charger’s output and protocol. Read its output ratings and confirm that it supports a mode the phone can use. A high maximum wattage that does not match the phone’s supported mode is not evidence that the phone will charge faster.

Check the cable and connection. Verify that the cable is suitable for the charging mode and power involved, and that the connection is secure. Fast charging depends on compatibility across the phone, charger and cable, not on one component in isolation.
-
Record the conditions for a meaningful comparison. Note the starting and ending percentages, whether the phone is being used, and the approximate temperature. Compare like with like: the same phone, similar charge interval, compatible equipment and similar conditions.
-
Use the phone maker’s result cautiously. A manufacturer’s timed result can provide a model-specific reference when its starting level, charger, screen state and temperature are stated. Do not transfer a result from another model or a partial interval to an unspecified 8,000mAh phone.
Sony gives one example of why the test details matter: for a specific Xperia support context, it reports 0% to 50% in 30 minutes using a 30W USB PD charger at 25°C with the screen off. That figure applies to the model and conditions Sony documents; it cannot be used to predict a full-charge time for another phone just because that phone has an 8,000mAh battery.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to interpret a slow charge
A longer-than-expected session does not by itself show that the battery or charger is faulty. First compare the setup with the phone’s official requirements. If a charger or cable does not support the phone’s fast-charging mode, the phone may use a slower compatible rate. Next consider whether the phone is being used, whether it is warm or cold, and whether the comparison is against a full-charge result or a shorter partial-charge claim.
For a useful check, charge over a consistent percentage interval with compatible equipment and similar conditions, then compare the elapsed time with a result for that same model. Avoid treating a charger’s maximum output as the expected sustained rate, or comparing results taken at different starting percentages. If the phone reports a charging issue or its behavior departs from its maker’s guidance, follow that manufacturer’s troubleshooting and safety instructions.
What to compare when choosing a charging setup
When evaluating two charging setups, compare the phone’s supported protocol and maximum wired input with the charger’s output under that same protocol, then check cable compatibility. A meaningful time comparison also needs the same starting and ending percentages, similar temperature and device-use conditions, and clarity about whether the figure is a manufacturer test or a calculation. If one of those details differs or is missing, the times may not be directly comparable.
